Chapter 29

Payment's Implications

Hebe fingered the diamond necklace absent-mindedly as she stepped towards the door. It was already eleven in the morning. Chun must have already gone for his Sunday brunch at the Connoisseurs Club. This should earn her some time to do her chores before stealing away into her room, hidden from him.

After the long night at Jiro’s abode, Hebe had thought things through. Trying to spite Chun wasn’t an option, and running away was certainly not possible. If all these years with Chun only let him deign her as a whore, there’s no point staying on. She will try to find work out of home, and try to move out as soon as she can be financially independent. Then, maybe after time flushes her love for Chun till it was barely there, she shall approach him and sever their matrimony once and for all. That is, the rational way of handling matters.

Hebe unlocked the door and walked through. The scene before her sapped the strength in her limbs. Chun was sitting at the couch, his hair in a mess and his clothes in disarray. Though he was deep in slumber, his presence was poignant enough to make Hebe want to run. She froze in her spot. The door shut heavily and woke Chun up. When his bloodshot eyes fell on Hebe, she could see that what was about to happen will not be pleasant.

“Look who’s back?” Chun’s hair prickled with agitation when she saw the get-up Hebe was in. Judging by it, and the fact she was out all night, she must have gone out and fucked some other man. Whore. He was not wrong when he chose to pay. That idea only fueled his anger further. Why had he believed she was a docile, gullible and perfectly dutiful lady? Appearances can be deceiving.

“ I don’t care what you want to do out there- ”Chun spoke in a deathly insipid voice, though in his heart, he meant the direct opposite. Hebe looked up with her sad droopy eyes and Chun was disgusted by her act. “As long as you’re still my wife, you had better get on with your daily chores. Are you trying to starve me with those rotten foods in the refrigerator?”

He hadn’t wanted to bring up the issue about the food in the refrigerator. It sounded like he was dependent on this woman and he hated that. No one should make him feel small and powerless. No one should make him feel neglected. He concluded that that feeling of being abandoned was just a product of his delirious state. He was just not used to someone doing something he didn’t expect. He gave Hebe a cold stare, hoping to see her flinch but she didn’t.

Hebe felt her temper rising with his every word. After treating her like a dispensable sex toy, he goes around laying claim on her. The moment he had paid her off with a necklace, he should have known that he had no control over what she does. By paying her, he had declared that she was nothing in his life, so why should he care so much. He wants food, she shall give him food. Hebe stormed out of the house and headed for the grocer.
