Chapter 4

Silent Reminders

The table was set. Two steaming hot dumplings set on Chun’s plate. Accompanied with the dumplings was a cup of barley. Chun shuttled from the end of the dining room to his seat quickly. The food served was not the usual eggs and ham. Picking up his fork, Chun took a mouthful of the dumpling. The taste of mellow red wine mixed with the chewy chicken meat greeted him. As though realizing something, Chun set his fork down and made a call.

“Calvin, help me prepare the things I need to visit my father’s grave….leave out the food offerings, I’ll get it ready.” Chun hung up the phone. Gobbling the rest of the breakfast, Chun wiped his mouth and drew his fountain pen from his pocket. He grabbed the serviette provided and scribbled 4 numbers on it – 1300.

At the same time, a pair of eyes gazed at Chun nervously. Seeing that Chun had got the hint, she smiled. Chun kept the pen and rose from his seat. She quickly retreated deeper into the safety of the shadows. It turned out to be a right decision, as Chun had turned to look at the spot she was just seconds ago.

Chun looked to the corner. He knew she had done this on purpose. Who needs serviettes for a meal at home? But he was grateful she had reminded him with his father’s favorite chicken dumplings that it was his father’s death anniversary. What irritated him a little was how she had mixed in wine to remind him of the day two years ago, when she first arrived and sat down reading his wine catalogue.

Perhaps the only good thing that came out of this marriage was the good cooking, considering the fact that Chun was a professional food connoisseur. He quickly stalked out of the dining room and left for his interview.

"Many memories are attached to food, at least more than superficial words."
