“Huh? What’s the matter baby?” XY mumbled through half-closed eyes.
“MOOOM!” Ah you screamed louder.
XY suddenly jumped to her feet. “WHAT? Is there fire? OMG, I have to get you out!” she automatically picked Ah You and headed for the door.
“There’s no fire mom! Put me down!” Ah You squeezed her mom’s shoulders.
XY finally came to her senses and saw that there was no fire. She took a deep sigh of relief and then put Ah You down. “You scared me! Why do you go screaming like that? I told you to do that only when…”
“I know. Number 1, when there is fire. Number 2, when there’s an earthquake. And number three, when I have to go to the bathroom to poop,” Ah You finished with a toothy smile.
“Well, there is no fire and the ground’s not shaking! OMG, do you have to poop?” XY scampered to check her pajamas if she has already dropped the bomb in there.
“Mom, I’m already 5 years old! I could go to the bathroom alone if I have to poop!” Ah you protested.
“Then we have to change that number 3…” XY was thinking deeply when the cuckoo clock announced the time. “OMG! It’s already 7!”
“That’s why I was screaming! We only have an hour and a half, mom, and we still haven’t had breakfast. I’m still in my pajamas. And you’re still in your clothes from last night. And you were almost drooling on your drawings. And ommmm ommmm ommmm…”
XY covered the little girl’s mouth as she picked her up. “Ok, there you go again with your machine gun mouth! And for your information, missy, I don’t drool when I’m sleeping.”
“Ohm yesm youm dom!” Ah You’s muffled retort came through her mom’s palm.
“Stop squirming, we don’t have time. Oh shit! I’m gonna be late for class again! We better take a bath together to save time!” XY hastened to the bathroom and unceremoniously dumped herself and little Ah You inside the tub.

“Good morning, sir,” Sec. Xu greeted XM as he entered the XM enterprise building.
“Good morning, Xu. What’s up for today?” XM inquired as he and his secretary were walking towards the elevators.
“3 meetings before lunch, and 2 more after,” Xu supplied in the details.
“*Sigh* 5 meetings…it never gets less than that. So I see that we have a busy day ahead,” XM tried not to sound tired.
“I could cancel some of them if you want, sir,” Xu offered.
“Nah, that would mean they will still pile up for another day. It’s better to get over them soon,” XM gave a weary sigh.
“Would you care for anything, sir?” Xu asked again once they reached the office.
“Black coffee would be great. I need to stay awake through the 5 meetings.”
---------------------------
“Now be a good girl and don’t get into any fights, ok?” XY reminded little Ah You with stern eyes.
“I promise mom,” Ah You repeated in a bored tone.
“I mean it little girl!” XY reprimanded.
“All right, all right! I won’t pull on Jane’s hair today,” Ah You pouted.
“Not only Jane. You shouldn’t be pulling out any of your classmates’ hair,” XY added.
“Oh, OK!” Ah you pouted more.
“Promise?”
“Promise!”
“Show me your hands,”
“Mom!”
“The hands, missy,”
“Oh fine!” Ah you presented her hands with a grimace on her face.
“That’s better. Now give mommy a kiss before you get inside,” XY squatted in front of Ah You.
“Do I really have to? Can’t we just have a secret handshake?”
XY pretended to look hurt.
“I hate it when you turn puppy on me, mom!” Ah You protested but kissed XY on the cheeks anyway.
“Where’s my big Barney hug?” XY teased a little more.
“Ugh, you know I hate Barney!” came out Ah You’s protest again but still hugged XY nonetheless. “I’ll go now. See you later mom.”
“See you later baby!” XY waved goodbye. “One down, 5 more to go,” XY said with a sigh as she walked back to her car.
-------------------------
“Three down, two more to go,” XM sighed as he reached his office. He just finished his third meeting for the day.
“Sir, would you like to eat lunch here or go out?” Xu asked.
“Can I just skip lunch?” XM closed his tired eyes.
“Sir, I’m afraid I can’t let you do that,” Xu said in a hesitant tone.
“Who’s the boss here?” XM gave him a deadpan look.
“Um, you sir. But you see, outside your office…I have another boss…”
“And who is that? Don’t tell me you’re working for the competition behind my back?” XM’s eyes got big.
“That’s not what I mean, sir. I mean this boss,” Xu opened the door and let a chubby little girl come in.
“Unca Xim Xim!”
XM’s ears perked up. Only one person calls him that. “Mei Xin!” XM opened his arms and scooped his goddaughter. “Wow! You’re getting heavy! What are you doing here? Are you distracting your daddy from his work?” he asked as he tickled her tummy.
“Nah ah! Unca DMS shao ye…”
“Xin xin, I told you there’s no need to say shao ye,” XM corrected.
“But I hear daddy say it all the time,” Xin xin pouted.
“That’s because your daddy is…” XM whispered something to her that made Xin Xin giggle.
“Oh ok. Like I said, Unca DMS picked up Shou Hui from school and he asked me if I want to see you and Daddy,” the little girl explained. “You should eat, Unca Xim Xim! Come on, I’ll feed you,” she gave him a toothy smile.
“Oh no, you don’t. This is my favorite suit,” XM held Xin Xin at arms length. “Why don’t we order some take outs, Xu, before this little monster of yours gets more ideas,” XM addressed his secretary.
-------------------------------------
“When are they going to stop coming?!” XY grumbled as she struggled to carry her plates amongst her other stuff. “I just passed a design plate this morning and before I could even take a deep breath the professor gives another one! Oh not one, BUT TWO!” she snorts sarcastically.
She blows out the hair out of her face in frustration. She was now making her way towards the school library where she works as assistant librarian. She was making a turn to her right when a student speeding by bumped into her.
“What the?!” was all she could mutter as she was ungracefully dumped on the floor along with her scattered stuff. The guy just offered her an apologetic smile before running off.
“You could at least help me gather my stuff!” she hollered at him to no avail. Good thing it was lunch break and most of the students were in the cafeteria. It will sure be a struggle to collect her things amidst a stampede!
“Blast it! I just bought this last week!” she cursed when she saw her drawing pen lying skewed on the floor, its fine tip damaged beyond repair. “This cost me a week’s lunch! And now I’m gonna have to go through another week of fasting to buy a new one! AAARGGHHHH!”
“Uh miss, do you need any help?” a guy asked out of nowhere.
“Huh?” XY looked at him through her hair that was curtaining her face.
“I said do you need any help?” he asked again with a smile.
“Oh my, such a cutie!” XY thought to herself before answering him, “Uh sure, thanks,” and then flashing him her best smile. She also scampered to her feet to fix herself and her messy hair.
“Thanks a lot,” she flashed him another smile while tucking her hair behind her ear.
“Oh, no problem. I know you’d probably do the same to other people,” the guy said nicely as he handed XY her things.
“I’m Rainie,” XY introduced herself through her English name. She extended her hand hoping that he will take it.
“I’m Doug,” the guy replied as he took her hand.
XY’s insides were jumping with glee. But before she reached nirvana, another voice came through.
“Oh there you are! I was wondering where you went,” a girl approached them.
“I was just helping Rainie here to collect her stuff. Oh Rainie, this is my girlfriend, Kelly. Babe, this is Rainie,” Doug introduced them.
XY looked up above her and she could see a flashing sign that says “LOSER!”, with an enormous arrow pointing down at her.
“Uh Rainie, are you all right? What are you staring at up there?” Kelly asked. She and Doug were now also staring at the ceiling.
XY realized that she was having another Ally McBeal moment and she shook her head vigorously to get it off her system. “Uh no, I was just thinking of something. Nice meeting you Doug…and you too Kelly…girlfriend of Doug. I really have to go now. Thanks again,” she mumbled before she sped away from them.
“You’re welcome,” Doug hollered at her.
XY just waved her hand in recognition without turning back to look at them. “I’m such a loser,” she mumbled to herself with a big pout.
------------------------------------------
“Finally, we’re done for the day!” XM stretched out of his chair and began to collect his things. He’s going to call the guys for a get-together to loosen up.
“That means daddy and I can go home now Unca Xim Xim?” Mei Xin asked through sleepy eyes.
“Yes, little monster. You and your dad could go home now,” XM playfully ruffled her hair.
Just then, Xu entered the door hastily and was trying to warn XM about something but he was just too tongue-tied to get anything out.
“Xu, calm down. I can’t understand your goofy hand signals,” XM complained.
“Your father, sir, is in the building. He’s on his way here to your office,” Xu finally breathed out.
“Dad?! Oh shoot! I bet he’s going to make me go to some social function to meet a girl. Oh why did I tell them that Shiela and I broke up?” XM berated himself as he hastened to fix his things, hoping to get out of the office before his father catches him. He has been evading social functions for the past week.
But Xu’s warning came in late.
“Er Long,” XM’s dad strode inside the office with an amused expression on his face. “I finally caught you this time!” he said triumphantly.
“Dad…” XM started.
“Oh no, you’re not going to squirm your way out of this one,” the older XM waved a finger at his son’s face.
“But…”
“Uh-uh, not another word. You’re going to the dinner with me and your mom tonight,”
XM knows that he’s already defeated so he hoped for some consolation. “Are my brothers gonna be there too?”
“No, they’re not. I just called them and they all had an excuse not to be there,”
“If they have an excuse, then I can have one too!” XM contended.
“Their excuse is something that you cannot use for yourself, son,” the older XM smirked.
“And what is it?” XM challenged, pretty sure that if his brothers got out of this one, he can too.
“Quality time with the family,” XM’s dad answered with a triumphant grin.
XM’s jaw dropped, switching on the LOSER sign that appeared in blinking lights above his head.

Later that night, two people on different sides of the globe could be found sitting on their respective balconies. One was holding a steaming cup of black coffee while the other was holding a mug of tea. Both of them were staring at the sky, desperately hoping that a wishing star might dance across the night sky.
They don’t know if they were just hallucinating but soon they both saw a falling star…
The one holding a mug of tea jumped to her feet in excitement, causing the hot tea to spill on her. “OUCH! OUCH! OUCH!” XY danced like a goofy Apache Indian in an effort to shake off the hot tea from her robe. When she looked at the sky, the falling star was slowly fading away. “Hey, hear me out first! I know I sound really desperate, but I don’t care anymore. Can I have a love life? Is that too much to ask? I’m already 28 and I’m not yet married! I want to be able to have kids before I enter my menopausal stage!!!! Huhuhuhu.”
While the one holding the cup of coffee was sitting calmly as he made his wish. He closed his eyes tightly. “I’m just asking for a sign. Please tell me if I should follow my friends’ advice…”
