Tian Chyi sat down and faced her, his face rather pale. "Well, I...ah...I *coughed* I've been thinking..." His voice trailed off and he stood up. The he walked in a small circle and sat down again.
Rain's heart began pounding in alarm. Obviously Tian Chyi had something important to tell her. And she also had a feeling she wasn't going to like what she was about to hear. "Yes?" Rain prompted him.
"Well, it's just, it's just----I am worried about this separation," he blurted out suddenly. "We know that long-distance relationships are hard to maintain."
Rain let out her breath in a rush, overcome with relief. She had been expecting some horrible news, but Tian Chyi was just as nervous about being apart from her as well.
Tian Chyi continued, "I think it will be fine if you want to go out with anyone you want while you are in New Zealand."
Rain frowned, suddenly suspicious of Tian Chyi's self-sacrificial air. Since when was her boyfriend concerned about her freedom to see other guys? "And what about you, Chyi?" Rain retorted. "I suppose you are anxious to start dating other girls."
Tian Chyi shrugged. "I wouldn't exactly say anxious," he responded carefully. "But I do think we should let each other loose for the next two years."
Tian Chyi's words hit her like a ton of bricks. Obviously he didn't care about her feelings at all. He just wanted his freedom! Rain felt a tiny fist gripping her heart. "Just for the two years?" she threw back at him.
Tian Chyi reached over and squeezed her hand. "I don't want to lose you, Rain. You know that! But I hope you'll come back to me. We could reevaluate our relationship after the two years."
Rain yanked her hand away. "And what if I don't want to come back to you? she snapped.
Tian Chyi's jaw clenched and he sighed. "I guess that's a chance I would have to take," he replied.
Rain could hardly believe what she was hearing. "You've decided all this already, haven't you?" she asked, eyes flashing angrily. Tian Chyi didn't answer but the pained look in his eyes provided all the answer. Rain realized he had already made his decision and that there was nothing she could do to change his mind.
Rain stood up slowly, blinking back tears. "Well, don't worry. You can have all the freedom you want. FOREVER." With that, she walked away with all the dignity she could muster.
"RAIN! Wait!" Tian Chyi called from behind her. Rain could feel her eyes burning. "Leave me alone!" she yelled. She slipped off her sandals and grabbed the straps bin one hand. Then she ran like a demon was after her. Barely able to see through her tears, she crossed the manicured lawns, sprinted around the lawn tennis court and raced towards her bedroom.
As she was running, she heard Tian Chyi's footsteps chasing closer and closer to her. "RAIN COME BACK!!!" he shouted. "Rain, wait!"
Rain yelled over her shoulder, "LEAVE ME ALONE!"
Tian Chyi caught her by the shoulders and spun her around to face him. "Rain, be reasonable," he pleaded, "Just because I think we should let each otheer loose for a while doesn't mean I don't love you."
"Yes, it does," Rain replied hotly and shrugged his hands off her. "I never want to speak to you again!" And she ran up to her room, slamming her door shut, tears streaming down her face as she slammed the door and sitting on her bed, face buried in her hands.
