Aaron already met that person. Her name was Hebe. The time they spent together was a heavenly experience for him. Her smiles, her kiss, her overly cheerful self. It was with her that he managed to laugh and to enjoy every breathe he took. But the party had to end, and so was their sweet relationship. Fate wasn't on his side. Being a super crime-solver didn't help much either. His life was already hectic and empty as it was. His job was there to, supposedly, added more "colors" to his monochromatic life. It was because of his job that he met and eventually, fell in love with her. Ironically, it was also because of his job that he lost her.
Hebe was his colleague. She was known for her shooting skill. As they said, she only shoot to kill. How did they meet? Well, how else? When they were assigned to work on the same case. A well-known shooter and Aaron, an expert in martial arts, made a perfect couple. Together, they slowly decipher the case and put the criminal behind bars. And gradually, their professional relationship turned into a much deeper one: love.
He vowed to love and protect her with everything he had. Cliche, yes. But it was true. That was what you supposed to do to your loved one.
A few months after the initial day they started dating, a rumor within the police department about a traitor spread. Someone was leaking all sort of top-secret information to the outside world. Many undercover officers were exposed and killed. Many secret operations were ruined. Aaron, as the chief investigator, had to capture the traitor. His investigation was going no where. Although surveillance cameras were installed all over the building, and extra security systems were added to every computer, the information was still leaked out. Unable to catch the traitor, frustration built inside Aaron. He blamed himself for not being careful enough. For not doing his job properly. And most importantly, for all the damages that it caused.
That fateful night, Aaron drowned himself in alcohol, hoping it would help wash everything away from his mind, even if it was just temporarily. After more than an hour at the bar, Aaron finally got out. It was exactly midnight. He decided to stop by Hebe's house. When he reached her house, he stopped and just looked at it. Looking at it and knowing that Hebe, his angel, was in there, sleeping soundly was enough to calm him down. But something wasn't right. May be his detective's instinct was trying to tell him something. The house was in a complete darkness. Hebe usually left a nightlight on because she was afraid of the dark. She had to have a nightlight on in order to sleep. If it was pitch black, she would feel like suffocating. That was she told him. Aaron walked up to the doorstep and pressed the bell button for a few times. No one opened the door. The house was deserted.
He took out his cellphone and dialed Hebe's number. "Please leave a message after the beep." It was the fifth time he heard that sentence. Where was she? She didn't go out this late at night. Or....Something did happen to her! Maybe the traitor kidnapped her because she knew every password and access code of the security systems. Probably. The thought scared the hell out of him. The alcohol's effect was being scared away!
Immediately, Aaron got in his car and drove straight to the police department. He parked his car and walked in. Just like a cat, he slipped through the series of doors and hallways without making a single noise. Aaron searched everywhere and found nothing. The security system was working properly. There was no sign of any unwanted guest. May be nothing had happened to Hebe. Aaron was just overreacted.
It was too soon to conclude.
The shadow of a figure cast by the dimmed light caught his attention. It was right outside the main operation room where almost all top-secret files were stored. It must be the traitor.
Aaron hid right around the corner, carefully observing the mysterious figure. Female, average height, dark and short hair. Strangely, she resembled Hebe! Well, don't all females kinda look alike? Short hair was very popular nowadays, right? Besides, how could Hebe be the traitor? Ridiculous! He pushed the useless thought out of his mind and focus back on that figure. She was struggling to open the door. Oh yes! Aaron just changed the password this morning. He forgot to inform the others. So he was the only one who knew it! Brilliant!
"Did you forget the password?" He stepped out with his gun drawn, aiming right at her heart.
She startled upon hearing his voice echoed through the hollow hallway. When she turned around facing him, he saw that her face was half covered with a black mask.
"Surrender or I will have to shoot you, honey," said Aaron triumphantly. He looked at her from head to toe, searching for weapon of any kind. She couldn't have broken into the police department unarmed.
Like he expected, she pulled out her gun and aimed it at him.
The two stood motionlessly. Guns drawn and pointed at each other's chest.
Aaron slowly advanced as she retreated. Suddenly, she fired and a bullet came flying past Aaron's arm. Before he could respond, she spun sharply away and ran. Aaron was right after her. He reached out and caught her arm. She raised her leg high, prepared to kick him. He blocked it with his arm. She pulled out her gun again and this time, he disarmed her before she could shoot him to death. He pulled her closer, in hope to captured both of her arms. By doing so, the faint jasmine fragrant radiated from her struck his nose. It was the same as the perfume made upon his request especially for Hebe. It was one of a kind. How did this girl .... ? Unless she was indeed....
"Hebe?" The name slipped from his numbed lips.
She was frozen the moment the name reached her ears, but then she quickly collected herself and freed from his grasp.
Aaron let her escaped. Everything fitted perfectly. Hebe would be the perfect traitor. She knew every access code. She was familiar with the building, and the security system. What more, she had him in her palms. He would never suspect her.
"No. It can't be Hebe!" Aaron's heart kept telling him that. He collapsed on the cold marble floor. "It can't be her."
He needed concrete evidence to prove this before he could believe it. No one else but him needed to know about his encounter that night.
The next morning, Aaron went to work hoping to see Hebe and confirm that his theory was wrong, only to found out she called and asked for a few days leave because she caught a flu. She should have call him. But she did not. He tried to called her. She didn't pick it up.
That day was the longest and the most unbearable day in his life. When it was over, he rushed out of the building, into his car and drove to her house. It was deserted...again.
So she was really the traitor.
Aaron couldn't think of any better way of escaping his own miseries, he decided to let the alcohol engulfed him. During those hours in the bar, her images were continuously playing in his mind. No matter how hard he tried to force her out, she found a way to sneak back in again. In the end, he gave up. Just let it be. Just let him relive the happy memories for one last time.
He stayed until the bar closed.
As he was walking toward his car, Aaron wished he could see Hebe again. He wanted to engrave her beautiful image in his memory.
Then, a group of men wearing black suits hopped out of a van and pulled Aaron in. Although drunk as he was, Aaron could still fight against them. Ten years of experiences in martial arts couldn't be so easily defeated by a few bottle of beers. But he let them knocked him unconscious and was dragged into the van. He knew where they would bring him to.
When Aaron regain consciousness, he saw himself handcuffed onto a wooden chair. He was held captive in an abandoned warehouse. Those men stood around him, formed a deadly ring. Guns were visible under their black suits. He wasn't afraid of those. What he was afraid of was the horrible truth he knew would soon be revealed.
His head was throbbing violently because of the blow, and of the alcohol.
The creaking sound told him that the rusty door of the warehouse was opening. It revealed a lady in a white dress. She took her hat off to exposed a beautiful but emotionless face.
"Hebe?" He recognized her. "Why?"
She didn't reply. Step by step, she was within his reach. Looking at the despaired Aaron coldly, she said, "I only do my job, Mr.Yan." Her icy words stabbed deep into his heart. He couldn't believe the dispassionate girl standing in front of him was the affectionate Hebe that he'd loved with all his heart.
"Your job...is to steal top-secret files for the mafia?" His voice was firm but he could feel hot tears were forming in the corners of his eyes. "And now, is it your job too....To kill me?" Aaron asked. He tried to keep his expression blank. It was extremely difficult. He loved her. Enough to not reveal her true identity. Enough to sit here, all tied up, while his life was dangling on a thread.
"Unfortunately, yes." Her sharp words bounced off the gray cement walls. "I've never thought it would be that easy to fool you, the greatest investigator of Taiwan police force. May be men are all the same. All are foolish - Idiots. My goal of getting close to you is for the information you hold. You're useless to me now. I've got what I wanted." She pulled out a silver disc and waved it back and forth. It contained the information about all of the undercover officers. Their names, their locations, even their families. There were a total of God knows how many of them all over Taiwan. If this disc slipped into the wrong hands, bloodshed was inevitable. He had to get it back.
"Did you ever truly love me? Is it all but an act?" He asked and swallowed the burning tears.
Hebe laughed dryly, "Love? Please wake up from your dream, Aaron! How can I love you? You're merely my tool!" The cruel answer escaped from her delicate lips.
"May be I was stupid to let you played with me like that," Aaron looked straight into her cold eyes and said. "But I'm not that stupid to let you have the disc!" He leapt up from the chair and side kick the guy to his left. Unlocking handcuffs was one of many tricks he'd learned in the police academy.
The rest of them poured in. Aaron knocked each one of them flat onto the ground. He then turned to Hebe, who was trying to get a clear shot at him. He disarmed her easily. The gun flew across the air and fell onto the floor. Aaron took the chance to get the disc back from Hebe's possession. The men now stumbled up around him and were closing in with guns drawn, blocking any possible exist.
"Give me the disc, and I might let you live," said Hebe angrily.
"Oh, really? Being nice to your opponent is being cruel to yourself. It was you who told me that, remember?" Aaron chuckled. "I don't see why you would let me off so easily."
"You have no other choice," Hebe continued. "Either you give me the disc, or you will get a bullet in that smarty brain of yours. If you cooperate, there's a chance you'll survive."
"Let's just say I want to know what a bullet could do to my brain," Aaron said coldly. What more damage could she cause to him?
"As you wish, Mr.Yan." One of the men passed her his gun. She aimed it straight at his chest. her finger inched closer and closer to the trigger.
Aaron waited for the bullet to come rushing through his heart. It was no use, really. Hebe already destroyed it with her words moments ago.
His eyes were glued onto hers.
Seconds passed but he felt like centuries.
Until...
"Put your weapons down!" A shout came from the outside. Blue and red lights were flashing through the broken glass windows. Heavily armed police squads surrounded the warehouse. The whole commotion distract Hebe and her men.
"Shit!" He heard her cursed. His beloved Hebe never cursed before. Oh well, it was just an act she put up to fool him.
He took this chance to disarmed and locked her arms with his. Aaron pointed his gun at her temple. "Tell them to surrender or I will shoot." It wasn't easy threatening your loved one.
"Shoot me if you can, Aaron." She called him the way she used to. It melt his heart. He swallowed the pain that was swelling up inside his throat.
"Look like you lose the game, Ms. Tian," said Aaron plainly as the police poured in. Victory was by his side. Should he be happy about this? She would probably spend the rest of her life in prison. Hebe, who he thought of as his future wife.
He lowered the gun and caught the handcuffs tossed to him by George, his superior. Without other choice, he handcuffed her. She was led away by two armed officers. Her eyes were burning with hatred, staring at him.
Aaron's gaze followed her until she was pushed into a police car and drove away.
"Aaron, I'm sorry about this," George patted Aaron's shoulder comfortingly.
"No. It's not your fault. It is my fault for being an idiot," Aaron shook his head. "Here's the disc. Keep it somewhere safe."
"Thanks."
"But how did you know I was here?" Aaron's curiosity took the best of him.
"I have my sources," George replied with a knowing smile. "Let's me handle this. You go home and rest."
"That's a good idea," Aaron nodded and left the scene, left his love for Hebe behind.
After that night, Aaron decided to resign. He'd have enough.
"NO! I'm not going to waste someone brilliant like you!" George protested when Aaron showed him his resignation letter. "Aaron, why don't we do this? You can keep your job, and have a break at the same time! I will transfer you to somewhere relaxing, where you don't have to work as hard. Then, when you've forgotten about.....her, you will just transfer back here!" He turned around, facing Aaron, and clapped his hand together excitedly.
"George, I don't..."
"Don't you dare say no to me!"
"But...."
"Enough! That's my final decision!" George said. "Aaron, just think about it! I'll transfer you to a small town where you don't have to lift even a finger! That way, you can still keep your job, no one will know about you, and when you're ready, you can go back here! It's a perfect plan!"
"I know, but..."
"There we go again! Why 'buts' ?Just go with it, Aaron! You can only gain from this experience."
A long silence....
Then....
"If doing that will make you shut up, then fine," Aaron agreed.
"Super!" George cheered. "I will arrange it for you asap!"
And so, after a much tense debate about where Aaron should be transfer to, everything was settled. It was decided that Aaron would be transfer to Penghu County, which is an archipelago consists of ninety small islands. More specifically, to a village in Wang-an township. That would be a really long trip from Taipei to his new office. The further, the better. He couldn't stand living in a city where Hebe's images filled in everything.
Aaron didn't know what he should feel. Sad? Happy? Anxious? Or simply, blank? It didn't matter anyway. Nothing matters anymore.
A month after Hebe's arrest, Aaron packed his belongings and embarked on a trip to Penghu. Whatever was waiting for him ahead, he did not know. All he focus on was how to remove Hebe from his heart......
It was impossible...
Impossible or not, it was time for him to move on and start afresh...
