Dangerously In Love

Chapter 3

A New Beginning

Resided on this small islet was an almost unknown village. The village only had a few hundreds people scattered along the shorelines and some further into the land. Everyone was closed to each other, like one big family. And like other families, there must be a few bad ones. The bad ones of this village were either gamblers or part-time thieves. Nothing major ever happen here, except for weddings and funerals. Life was peaceful and relaxing. No one complained about anything. If you count occasional disturbances, such as domestic disagreements, which usually led to a bit of violence and profanity. Beside that, everything was perfectly calm. The villagers enjoyed the fresh ocean air every morning when they went to work. Most of the men were fishermen. The rest of the inhabitants consisted largely of farmers. There was one school that responsible for about a hundred students of all ages. The school ground consisted of a kindergarten, an elementary, a middle and a high school. Most of the kids merely finished high school. After that, they stayed on the islet and took over their families' businesses. Only a few went into the city to go to college.

It was a very typical village.....

On this particular morning, everything was about to change.....

Aaron walked out of the airport's entrance; he'd reached Wang-an township. He was expecting someone from his new police department to come and pick him up. So far, no one was there. He'd been waiting for hours. Couldn't wait anymore, he walked out and called a cab. Lucky he had the address. He got in the cab and showed the driver the address. The driver nodded and started the car.

The ride was fine. He didn't care much about the scenery. All he was thinking of was his new office and colleagues. Hopefully, there wouldn't be much work waiting for him like George had said. He could just lay back and do nothing. After what had happened, he didn't feel like working anymore. All of his energy had been drained out of his veins.

After a while, Aaron felt asleep. The trip tired him out. Even he wasn't completely relaxing in his sleep. He dreamt of Hebe, again. It was when he arrested her. She was crying and begging him to let her go. She said she didn't want to go to jail. She would die in there, all alone. Unfortunately, he had to say no. He had to watch her screamed and cried. Her tears torn his heart apart. . .

"Sir, sir?" The driver was shaking his arm, trying to wake him up from his not-so-sweet dream. "Are you OK?" He asked kindly. Aaron was sweating all over.

"Hum? I'm...I'm fine. Thank you." He opened his eyes and looked around.

"We're here, sir," the driver said. "It'll be $30."

"Oh, right. Here," Aaron handed the driver the money and got off the cab. He pulled his luggage out. It was only a suitcase and a leather messenger bag hanging from his shoulder.

As the cab pulled off, he found himself standing in front of an old building with a sign read "He-ping Police Department". Aaron shook his head off of his troubled thoughts and went in.

Inside, there were a few desks and cabinets. A sofa and a coffee table. A lady in casual clothes look up and realized someone was standing in front of the door.

"Sir? How can I help you?" She asked politely.

"Hi. My name is Aaron, Aaron Yan. I just transferred here...."

Like a switch just clicked in her head, she interrupted, "Oh! You're the new chief! Please, come in!" She led him into the main room.

"Uhm, where is everyone else?" Aaron asked.

"They're out for lunch, sir."

"Lunch? It's like 10 in the morning!" He said astonishingly.

"Well, yes, it's their lunch shift," the lady said, a bit embarrassed.

"Alright," Aaron didn't press on the topic any further. Instead, he took the time to look around the room. All four walls were painted light blue. They were all aged. There were even some parts where the paint started to peel off. The furniture didn't help much. Two mismatched sofas were lined in a corner with a small three-legged coffee table.

"Sir, let me show you your new office," the lady offered.

"Sure!" Aaron nodded.

They walked toward the back, where a small break room was located. Right next to it was a stairway.

"Your office is upstairs," she said and pointed upwards.

"Uhm, how should I address you?" Aaron asked while they were walking up the stairs.

"Oh, I'm sorry!" She was obviously embarrassed. "I'm Angela Zhang. I just work here as a secretary."

"Oh, OK, Angela," Aaron repeated the name as if to carved it into his short-term memory.

"Right this way, sir," she said.

"Angela, just call me Aaron." He didn't like to be called "sir". Why call him by that meaningless word when he had a name?

"OK!" Angela smiled broadly. She felt a little more comfortable now. "Your office is right down the hall, sir....I mean...Aaron." She caught her mistake right away.

Aaron gave her an assuring smile and headed into his new office.

It was nothing like his old office back in Taipei. The room was much smaller with navy blue walls. A brown desk was placed directly in front of the only window. Sunlight shone brilliantly through the thin white curtains. A gray filing cabinet stood silently in a corner.

Aaron's eyes swept across the room's diameter. Though there wasn't much, he was still satisfied. His only concern was the other officers under his supervise. As long as his future colleagues weren't a group of lazy-butts, he wouldn't have any problem staying here at all.

"Is there anything you don't like, Aaron?" Angela asked politely. Even though she'd stopped calling him "sir", her voice was too formal that it made no difference.

"No. It's perfect!" Aaron smiled broadly at her. The first smile he had for months. Aaron didn't understand why it appeared on his face. May be it knew that this would be a new start for its owner and the past was already left behind.

"Good," Angela returned the smile, "Have you had lunch yet? Maybe you should head into town for some snacks," she suggested.

"That's sound like a great idea!" Aaron nodded. Just now, he realized how empty his stomach was.

"Just take a right when you've reached the intersection. There you can find a street full of vendors and restaurants," Angela told him.

"OK. But aren't you going too?"

"No. I have to finish up some paperwork first," she answered.

"Alright. I'll be back soon," Aaron said as he put his bags down on the floor. He walked down the stairs out the main door and followed Angela's instructions.

He walked along the small street looking from restaurants to vendors. The smell of various dishes helped him realized how hungry he was. There were noodle soups, wonton soup, ice cream, smoothie, and who knows what else! He tried to find his way to the wonton vendor through a group of female students circling around it. "Are they suppose to be at school now?" Aaron wondered to himself.

"Excuse me," he said. No one moved. "Uhm..." The group kept on laughing was they waited for their orders.

"Oh my gosh, did you guys hear about what happened to Lan and her boyfriend?" One girl said to the others.

"Of course! Everyone at school was talking about it yesterday," another girl replied with a nod. Then all of them started talking at once. Aaron couldn't make out anymore words.

Just when he was about to turn to other vendors, the girls received their orders and finally, moved away. However...

"Ouch! Hot! HOT!" the girl stood right in front of Aaron grabbed the hot container directly with her hands instead of carrying it in a bag like the others. As she was backing away from the vendor, her fingers could not take anymore heat and started to trembled a little. At precisely that moment, she tripped on a small puddle of water, all thanks to her slippery high heels. The container flew out of her fingers and its content splashed on Aaron's white shirt. Before he could response, the girl grabbed his arm in an attempt to balance herself. Unprepared for the disaster, Aaron lost his own balance and the two fell flat on the ground. The girl landed squarely on her back and Aaron found himself on top of her. Not a pretty scene to watch. His face was just a breath away from hers. Aaron stared directly into her horrified eyes.

"Get off me!" She pushed him mercilessly to the side as she tried to stand up.

"Ow..." Aaron groaned.

"Are you alright?" A voice yelled from a distance away with the sound of a whistle.

Aaron stood up and came face to face with an angry policewoman. "How dare you attacked that girl?"

"What...?" He asked, genuinely surprised.

"Don't pretend like you don't know, mister!" The policewoman pointed her index finger at him.

"But...she pulled me...I," completely lost at words, Aaron started to stuttered.

"It's not his fault, Gui Gui," the owner of the wonton vendor spoke up in his favor. "It was Xiao Lan who didn't want to fall all by herself that she had to pulled him down with her."

"I was only trying to balance myself," the girl named Xiao Lan said defensively.

"Fine, I'll let you go this time," Gui Gui said embarrassingly.

"Good! Thank you!" Aaron snapped at her. His appetizer was killed by this incident. What a great start for his new life!
