Chapter 26

A Phone Call Away (Ok Taecyeon//Soo Yun)

Ring…ring…

Eighteen-year-old Park Sooyun looked up from her book, staring disbelievingly at her phone. She’d only just bought this phone one week ago and hadn’t even gotten around to telling her friends and family what her new number was.

‘So…who’s calling me?’

Hand shaking, she reached out for her phone and automatically checked to see what number was attempting to contact her.

‘Unlisted…number.’

She shook her head, clicking her phone shut and effectively ignoring the call. ‘Probably just a wrong number.’ She returned to her book, even getting past a few pages when…

… Her phone rang again.

Eyes narrowed, she reached for the phone again and saw the same words: Unlisted Number. ‘They called me again? How’d they get this number?’

“Hello?” she said cautiously.

“Is this Park Sooyun?” a voice said on the other line.

“Erm…perhaps.” Mentally she berated herself—who else would it be? And didn’t saying ‘perhaps’ as an answer to their question mean that she obviously was Park Sooyun? Ugh, honestly, she felt daft sometimes.

The voice, however, sounded amused. “I’m 2PM’s manager, Kim Leehyun,” he (yes, it was definitely a he) said. “I’ve seen you dance and I was wondering if you’d be willing to be 2PM’s choreographer.”

Sooyun was speechless. “W-what? Choreographer?”

He chuckled. “We saw your work. It’s very good, especially your original dances.”

“Um…thank you?” Sooyun was hesitant: she didn’t know if this Leehyun fellow was really 2PM’s manager due to all the secrecy and mystery behind the managers of stars. No one knew who they were exactly, but only that they were there. It could get kind of confusing. “How do I know you’re actually the manager of 2PM?”

“Oh. One moment.” Voices were muffled as the manager seemingly put a hand over the phone. Then, she could hear the phone change hands.

“Hello?” A different voice said. Sooyun could barely stifle a gasp. “Hello?”

“Hello?” She clutched at her phone. “T-taecyeon oppa?”

“Sooyun?” She could hear the smile in his voice. “I, on the behalf of 2PM, would like to invite you to be our choreographer. What do you say?”

“I…yes!” She couldn’t stop the grin from spreading over her face.

Sighing nervously, Sooyun readjusted the strap of her shoulder bag as she stood outside the tall JYP Entertainment building. There was no way she was going to be okay in this situation. What on earth had persuaded her to take this job, anyway?

Oh, right. The lure of 2PM. And Taecyeon.

Man, she felt really bad for the guy. First his leader left, leaving pretty much everybody depressed. And then extensive pressure to do well on the new album and to show the leader that they still missed him. Plus, there was that whole thing with the letter and the blood and the hair and…

Eugh. It was just slightly nasty.

She shuddered, not noticing a worker come up to her questioningly. “Um, miss?” the worker said, looking unsure if Sooyun was somehow mentally ill (she had, after all, been standing outside the building, furrowing her eyebrows, contorting her face into various degrees of disgust and sympathy, and shuddering). “Miss, can I help you?”

Broken out of her reverie, Sooyun looked at the slightly shorter woman. “Oh, er…I’m Sooyun!” she said brightly. “I’m here to teach the people, you know, how to dance and stuff?”

“Oh…” The woman nodded in understanding. “You must be here for the boys, then. I’ll show you to them.” She turned and walked away, clearly expecting Sooyun to follow.

The pair of them walked into the building and onto, Sooyun noticed distractedly, polished hardwood floor. She wasn’t sure why she noticed this, though, because it wasn’t as if she hadn’t seen hardwood floor before.

No, it was the fact that she could see her reflection as she walked by. That was pretty cool in itself.

Soon the pair had arrived at what seemed to be a set of heavy doors. Sooyun’s eyebrows rose involuntarily at the impressive sight. The woman opened the door, revealing the dance studio that Sooyun had only dreamed of:

The hardwood floor almost matched the one outside, only this one was a shade lighter and, on closer inspection, had a few scuff marks on the polish. The walls were mirrors, with metal bars about waist-height attached to one of the walls.

And, to top it all off, the boys of 2PM were already there, waiting.

She couldn’t stop a smile from spreading over her face as her eyes fell on Taecyeon. He was sitting cross-legged on the floor, quiet, tracing the scuff marks that had undoubtedly been made by his band. He looked exactly like a small child… And it was too adorable.

She cleared her throat and the six boys jumped. “Um… Hi,” she said nervously, resisting the urge to smooth down her hair, pull down her shirt, or adjust herself in any way that would give away her anxiety. “I’m Sooyun, and you guys are 2PM, right?”

“Yea. I don’t think we have to introduce ourselves, do we?” Junho asked, smiling.

“Nah,” she laughed. Out of the corner of her eye, she could see the woman leave. “So, I take it that you need a choreographer?”

“Yea,” Wooyoung said, somewhat sheepishly. “Our last one quit in a huff in September, after—” He stopped suddenly.

“After…our leadja left,” Junsu said quietly. The previously happy atmosphere dimmed to a depressed one. The seven of them shuffled awkwardly.

“Uh… So… You need a choreographer, huh?” Sooyun blurted.

Chansung nodded empathetically. “Yes! Especially since we’ve got a music video that needs filming soon.”

“Oh, which one?” Sooyun was relieved that they were back on safe ground again. Talking about Jaebeom was a dangerous subject for anybody. Especially 2PM, seeing as, though it was clear they all missed him; they couldn’t really say anything to support their missing brother.

“Worn Out Waiting For You,” Taecyeon said. He looked up and his eyes met Sooyun’s for a split second.

She looked away, blushing. “What kind of mood do you think this song has, to you?” Safe ground. Safe ground.

Music and dance were safe… Hopefully.

“Well… I don’t know, I kind of see it as a happy, quick-tempo-ed, sad.” Junsu’s fellow band members slapped him upside the head immediately following his words. “What? I’m sorry, that’s just what I think?”

“You idiot, think about the title,” Wooyoung said, rolling his eyes. “Hello, ‘Worn Out Waiting For You?’ How does that sound happy?”

“And, besides, a song can’t be happy and sad at the same time,” Chansung pointed out.

“I get what Junsu-oppa means,” Sooyun broke in, wanting to dispel any tension that might be in the room. “So…” Immediately, a dance began to form in her head. She walked around the band members contemplatively, studying the way they stood and the general aura they had around them. “I think I’ve got it.”

One hour and thirty minutes later they found the studio in great disarray. The boys were lounging around on mats that someone had brought in. They were dressed in various styles of dancing clothing. Sooyun herself wore black leggings and a ribbed tank top, hair tied back in a messy ponytail. She was in front of Chansung, demonstrating the dance to 2PM for what seemed like the hundredth time.

“Okay, so that means Junho-oppa is going to turn this way while you,” she pointed to Chansung, “kind of shift behind him and do this.” As she spoke, she did the dance moves. Chansung looked on, head tilted and looking similar to a lost puppy. “Does that make any sense?”

“Well, kind of,” Chansung said. “So it’s kind of like this?” He then danced the steps perfectly.

“Good job,” Sooyun said, smiling slightly. She’d finished going through the dance steps with most of 2PM’s members. All that was left now was Taecyeon’s dance movements, and she’d heard that he was pretty okay at dancing.

That shouldn’t be too bad, should it?

“Okay, Taecyeon oppa, your turn,” she said, pushing hair back from her head.

“Aren’t you tired?” he asked.

She laughed, shaking her head and dislodging the hair that had managed to stay behind her ears. “Nope, I’m used to dancing for long periods of time. It’s what I like to do.”

He shrugged. “If you say so.”

“I do say so.” She grinned at him. “Now, here’s what you want to do. Watch closely.” She counted off in English, then began to dance. In her opinion, this was one of the hardest. Not only did Taecyeon have to coordinate with everybody else, but he was the first one to dance. He set the tone for the whole music video, so to speak.

He watched her intently, standing in a half-way crouch with his hands on his knees, eyes following her every move. Once she had finished, he nodded and stood up straight and began to copy what she had done. His eyes were narrowed in concentration as he tried to remember what she did.

“Oh, close, oppa,” she said. She came up next to him and repeated the steps again. After a few beats, he began to copy her.

As he was about to perform one of the more complicated moves, he stumbled over his feet and tripped sideways, causing Sooyun to trip. They fell with a loud thud to, luckily, the mat that they had been dancing on.

Unfortunately, as they had landed, Sooyun was pinned under Taecyeon. Her eyes had been shut in fear of the fall and, when she opened them, she found Taecyeon’s face mere centimeters from hers.

Time seemed to stand still as Sooyun and Taecyeon stared at each other. His eyes drifted down to her lips and she could read the conflicting emotions in his face. He drew his head nearer and she closed her eyes in anticipation.

“Hey! Are you guys okay?” Wooyoung’s voice broke them out of their trance.

“Uh, y-yea, we’re fine,” Taecyeon said, standing. He held out a hand to pull Sooyun up.

“Are you sure?” Junsu asked worriedly. “That was a pretty loud thud. I knew we shouldn’t have brought the mats in.”

“I’m fine!” Sooyun said, pasting a smile on her face. “Trust me. Everything’s okay, no one’s hurt, and that’s all that matters, right?” She turned to Taecyeon. “So, oppa, do you think you have the dance moves down?”

“I… Yea, I think I’m good.” He wouldn’t meet her eyes.

“Sweet! Ice cream time!” Chansung cheered, racing out of the room.

Wooyoung gave Sooyun a look as if to say, “Maknaes…” and followed Chansung out of the room.

She laughed and, unsure if she was doing the right thing, exited the room behind them.

“Sooyun, turn on the TV and watch KBS right now!”

“What? No, Jenny, I’m busy!” she called back.

Jenny was her friend from the United States. Well, more like the exchange student. It was Sooyun’s turn to host Jenny at her house.

“But 2PM’s performing the dance that you made for them!” Jenny protested.

“Okay, okay, fine! If it’ll get you to shut up,” she said, muttering the last part under her breath. Reaching blindly for the remote, she turned her TV on as Jenny came running into the room and jumped onto her bed. “Oof. I thought you were watching in the living room.”

“I was, but I figured it would be more fun to watch it with you,” Jenny said, shrugging. “Now hush.”

“Worn Out Waiting For You” began to play, 2PM already on stage, as the fans cheered ecstatically. She could hear everyone’s vocals and, listening to the song, spaced out as she thought about the almost-kiss that she and Taecyeon almost had.

Suddenly, she was jabbed in the side by Jenny. “Ow! What?”

“They just said your name,” the American girl said, eyes wide.

There was silence in the room for a few minutes as the members of 2PM laughed and talked.

“Have you guys ever fallen in love?” the announcer asked jokingly. “And care to tell us about it?” At this last, the audience laughed: there was no way that 2PM would reveal who they were in love with.

“Actually, yes. I recently fell in love with a coworker,” Taecyeon said, to the surprise of all.

“Really? And who is she?” the announcer asked.

“I… I don’t want to say her name,” Taecyeon replied, amongst the shocked faces of 2PM, “but I will call her.” He dug his phone out of his pocket (strange how he could fit it in there, what with his tight pants) and dialed a number, holding it up to his ear expectantly.

Sooyun’s phone rang.

She reached for it, hand trembling. “Hello?”

“Hi… It’s Taecyeon.” When he said those words, she almost fell over in shock.

“I-I know. I’m watching you on KBS right now,” she said, trying to chuckle. Her heart was pounding.

“Oh.” There was silence for a few minutes. “I meant it, you know.”

“Meant… What?” Sooyun didn’t mean to say the words: they just slipped out of her mouth.

Jenny swatted her. “Jerk! You’re going to make him say it?”

“I-well, I know we just met,” Taecyeon said. “But I did mean it. I think I love you.”

“Oh.” Sooyun’s head felt light. “I… I see.”

“Well, um…” Disheartened by her reaction, or lack thereof, Taecyeon tried to cover up his feelings by laughing nervously. “I’ll see you later then, shall I?”

“Wait! No!” Sooyun said. “I, um… The thing is, I, uh, have really liked you for some time now, and… Um, yea.”

At this, the crowd did laugh (they’d been listening, as the announcer had forced Taecyeon to put it on speaker and next to the microphone).

“Oh.” He sounded much happier.

“Ask her out on a date!” Chansung whispered loudly.

Taecyeon chuckled, embarrassed. “Date? Tomorrow, then?”

“Okay.” Sooyun hung up, feeling a smile break out over her face.

“Oooh, you’re in love,” Jenny teased.

“Am not!” Sooyun said. “Now get out! I want sleep!” Jenny laughed at being chased out of Sooyun’s room: they both knew that Jenny would be sneaking back in at night to gossip, anyway.

As Jenny left, Sooyun turned back to the TV, her eyes immediately going to Taecyeon.

Taecyeon, as if knowing she was watching, turned to the camera and winked. She laughed, and, instinctively knowing that the gesture was meant for her, blushed.

In love?

Well… Maybe.
