Chapter 1

A little girl around 10 years old sat on the swing. Her best friend was called away to some kind of meeting with Sister Chan and she was left alone. She kicked her feet back and forth. Her best friend was now gone for a whole half hour. She had no idea where he was and why he was called away.

Another ten minutes passed when ah Yi suddenly heard her name be called from faraway from her one and only best friend. He was running towards her, his face happy yet somehow showing a hint of sadness and his hand was clenched into a fist with something wrapped inside. The next thing she saw was her best friend getting closer and closer to her until he tripped and tumbled. He landed right in front of her, possibly only three inches away. She got up from her swing and pulled him to his feet.

“Fung gor gor, why are you so happy?” she asked him once he stood up right again

“Take a guess.” The eleven year old boy commanded

“Um…Sister Chan gave you a present?” she guessed

“Nope.”

“Just tell me.” She urged

“Fine. I heard from Sister Chan that I will be adopted by a really nice family. I also got to meet them. They were so nice. But the only thing I don’t like is that they won’t adopt you as well.” He said

She felt a surge of sadness rush about inside her. He had always been her best friend and probably the only true friend. She forced a smile to him. She was of course happy for him. He was adopted by a nice family that was willing to share their happiness with him. She wasn’t lucky like him. Nobody came to adopt her or see her. Her parents did not want her and she did not make very many friends.

He realized that she wasn’t very excited about this news.

“Well I got you this!” he opened up his fist and handed her a silver heart shaped locket. She tried opening it but it wouldn’t open.

“It won’t open!” she complained

“Hahaha. Of course it won’t. I have the key!” he smirked waving the key around

“Aww! Unlock it! I want to see the inside.” She whined

“Nope! You won’t get to see it until I come back for you!” ah Fung replied

“Come back for me?” she questioned

“Ah Yi! Of course I’ll come back for you! And when I do, I will unlock the necklace and let you see the inside of it.” He smiled

“Ok! But you better come back soon!” she added

“I will. But I have to get packing now. I am leaving tomorrow afternoon.” He said

“So soon?” she questioned

“Yeah. But I made a promise and I will keep it no matter what!” he said as he headed back to his room

The next day, ah Yi gave ah Fung a long hug.

“Remember the promise?” she asked, sticking out her pinky waiting for him to pinky promise her

“I remember and I will keep it no matter what. Wait for me.” He added and wrapped his pinky around hers and they shook it.

Then ah Yi gave a small smile, gave him a peck on the cheek and scooted back for ah Fung to climb onto the car.

The car engine started and ah Yi felt like crying. She waved at ah Fung and he waved back at her until he was too far to be seen. Once he was out of sight, tears flowed out of her eyes nonstop. Sister Chan patted her back and smiled at her and stroked her head. It didn’t make her feel any better. All she wanted right now was ah Fung to sooth her and of course he wouldn’t be there. He was always the one who calmed her down, soothed her and made her feel better about life and herself. Now life without him would be difficult and lonely.

This is kind of like an overview of their friendship and when they were young. The following chapter(s) might be somewhat about Tavia's life. Comments please!!!
