Chapter 2

Different Ways

After a couple of months of ah Fung’s departure from the orphanage, ah Yi was also adopted by a set of parents. When she first met them, she already had a nervous feeling and after living in that household after two years, they started getting abusive and mean. After she got home from school, she was expected to do her own homework, do chores such as water the plants, mop the floor, do laundry and cook dinner. If she didn’t manage to do all of these things before they came home at 7:00 pm, her punishment would be cleaning the living room. They would yell at her when they had a bad day at work or if she does the slightest thing wrong.

Throughout her teenage years, she learned to be independent and hardworking. She was smart in school, going above and beyond necessary requirements and excelling in music and sports. But inside she couldn’t help but feel lonely. Sometimes at night, she would think about her real parents and ah Fung. She imagined what ah Fung was doing and how he looked. She never took off the locket that he gave her. It was always on her neck. She would never take it off unless for showers.

She now goes by the name of Tavia instead of ah Yi. Her friends had urged her to get an English name so she let her friends decide and it came to the name Tavia. She actually thought it sounded weird at first but then she grew comfortable with it and liked it.

I realize that the chapter title has nothing to do with this chapter but I couldn't come up with anything else. This chapter was just a simple description of Tavia's teenage years. The next chapter will be Tavia before she goes to college. Sorry to disappoint those who expected something better from me. Comments! =]
