Chapter 1

New School

--------------------

“What was that? Some kind of joke? You set the entire school on fire!”

I felt the crowd of students’ eyes all glaring at me. I avoided looking at them.

“It looked like you shot fire out of your own two hands!” He continued. “What are you? A wizard?!”

Wizard.

My entire body shivered to the sound of that word. The crowd began mumbling amongst themselves.
“It’s not my fault. I couldn’t control myself.” I whispered to myself.

“We outta kill you. All of our valuables were in the school and you burned it down.”

The group agreed and began moving towards me.

“No! Stop! Don’t touch me!” I shouted, trying to escape.

Someone grabbed my arm and immediately he burned.

The group continued walking towards me, as if they didn’t see what happened to the last guy. Each of them burned as they touched me. I felt like a murderer. A few minutes later, the entire crowd had become ashes. I stood on my knees, sobbing.

“I’m a killer.” I said.

“Sungmin! Wake up.” A familiar voice appeared into my nightmare. He grabbed my arm.
“Stop! Don’t touch me!” I shouted once more. My eyes opened and I saw Yesung staring at me with worried eyes.
“Ye…sung?” I asked, in a shaky voice. It appeared that I was in the hotel room that Yesung had us stay in.
He looked at me. “Did you have that dream again?”
I nodded. My body was drenched with sweat and my bed sheets were all ruffled up.

Yesung was the only one who understood me. We’ve been friends since we were very little. I had other friends but they all died… because of me, the same reason as in the dream, they all burned. Yesung knew what I was, a wizard with uncontrollable powers. I can release fire uncontrollably, and who ever touched me will burst into flames. Yesung was the only person who can touch me and not burn.

I gripped onto Yesung’s shoulder. “I’m scared. What if I burn the school down again or I hurt someone?”
This is the 5th school that I’ve been transferred to in one month. I’ve been expelled from my other schools for causing fires or setting someone on fire. Whenever I was expelled, Yesung would come along with me.
“I don’t know. I feel like somehow I can relate to you. I feel like I need to protect you”, he once said when I asked him why he was dropping out of the school whenever I got expelled.

“Don’t worry about it. Just relax and everything will be okay.” Replied Yesung in a calm voice but I can tell that he was as nervous as I was. “Come on. We need to check out of the hotel and start heading to our new school.”

~

“Class, we have a new student here today. I want you guys to be respectful and kind to him. Honey, why don’t you come in?” the teacher asked.

I opened the classroom door and walked in, facing the class.
“This young man is Lee Sungmin. He just moved here recently.” The teacher tried to pat Sungmin on the head but he quickly moved away, avoiding her touch.
“Sungmin, please sit next to Lee Donghae. Donghae please raise your hand so he knows where to sit.”

A boy next to the window, raised his hand. I walked over and took the seat next to him. I began unpacking my stuff until I felt a gaze.
I looked to the window. Donghae was staring at me. It was a cold stare. I swallowed hard.
“Um…hii. My name is Lee Sungmin.” I said, showing a weak smile. He didn’t say anything but looked away.

“Welcome to class Sungmin. Do you have any questions?” asked the teacher.
“No.” I answered.
“Okay. Well, class will begin now.” She continued.

~

When the last bell rang for the day, I quickly packed my stuff and left to my new dorm until someone called my name. I turned around to see Donghae with his book bag over his shoulder. Again, he was staring at me with those cold eyes.

“Oh hey Dongha—“ I got cut off.
“You’re a wizard aren’t you?” He asked me.
The question took me by surprise.
“A wizard? They don’t exist. I don’t know what you’re talking about.” I said, giving a light laugh, avoiding eye contact.

Donghae walked closer to me and gripped onto my hand.

“Don’t touch me—“ Power poured into me. My hand became tingly. It felt like my hand was breaking into pieces.

I quickly jerked my hand away from Donghae’s grip. He looked at me, as if waiting for a response. Finally I spoke.

“What did you just do to my hand?” I examined it. It looked okay.
“Its called wizardry. Now answer my question.” He said, harshly.
“You’re a wizard also.” I said.
“I know and I hate it. I don’t like to admit it. I have to isolate myself from the others or else I will kill someone.” He said.
“I know what you mean. How did you know that I was a …..” I looked around to make sure no one was near us. “Wizard?” I said in a whisper.
“Your body is releasing a strong aura. I saw it once you walked into the class. Are you trained?” He asked me.
“No. I can’t control my powers. I haven’t been trained yet cause I can’t find anyone to train me.” I told him.
“Figures. Wizards are disappearing now. A group called The Dragons is going around killing all of the wizards. They killed my family.”
“I’m sorry to hear that.” I said.
“It doesn’t matter.” He looks at me. “Your probably the last wizard to be born. Where are your parents? Are they wizards?” He asked.
“I don’t know who they are. They’re probably dead.”
“The Dragons will probably come after you. You should be careful.” He warned.

I felt the urge to leave. The conversation was starting to bother me.

“Um… okay. Thanks for the info. I’m going back to my dorm. If you need me, I’ll be in room 302.” I said in a hurry.
“Same. I’ll be in room 313, across the hall.” He replied with a smile.
“Okay. Nice meeting you Donghae. See you later.”
“See you, Sungmin.”
