Double Humiliation

hi guys! winglin is finally back again. here's the first chapter...

The banquet hall was full of people at Jem Jewelers annual holiday bash. Mr. and Mrs. Tong were pleased with the outcome of the party. They glanced around and caught sight of their daughter, Leila, laughing and enjoying the company of her friends. “She has grown up and has become a beautiful young lady.” Mr. Tong said to his wife. She nodded in agreement and smiled in return. Leila noticed her parents and met them eye to eye. Her smile grew wider and she excused herself from her group and walked towards her parents.

As Leila was approaching her parents, a young gentleman held a tray of drinks out to her, “Care for a drink, miss?” He asked her with a polite smile. ‘Hot damn, she’s beautiful’, he thought to himself when she turned her attention to him. ‘Beautiful eyes, beautiful smile to compliment a beautiful face’, his thoughts continued. He didn’t even hear her thank him and walk off until someone snapped him out of his reverie.

“Excuse me sir, can I get white wine instead of red?” A feminine voice rang out in front of him. He came back to reality and saw his friend, Tavia, gawking at him mischievously. “I see you have a thing for Miss Tong, dear friend,” she continued. “It can’t be love, you never settle down.”

“What! Is that her name? You know her?” he asked her bewildered.

“Hello, earth to Bosco. This is a Tong function, she’s the daughter of Mr. Tong,” she pointed to them across the room. “As for how I knew her, we had classes together in college. We kept in touch, she got me a job at the corporate office, and we remained great friends.”

“How? Whaa, whaa, What!? How come you never introduced us?” Bosco was still bewildered.

“Don’t you remember anything at all? You were always too busy working at your family business and never came out with me.” Tavia answered.

“Oh,” was all Bosco managed to let out. He scratched his head, “Well then, Miss Yeung, you can get your own glass of white wine.” With that he marched off towards the other guests, smirking.

“What?!” Tavia called out to him. “You jerk.” A smile crept up her face.

One the other side of the room, Leila met her parents, “Daddy! Mommy! The party is wonderful, a great way to end the year and start a new year with much success.” She kissed her mom and dad on the cheeks. “The food is great and so is the service. Everyone is content.”

“Thanks honey,” her father, Mr. Tong replied.

“Why don’t you two go out and dance, you deserve it,” she pushed her parents in the direction of the dance floor.

“Alright, alright dear,” her mother replied, laughing, “Your father and I will dance. We just wanted to observe the scene for a few moments.”

“Good, I’m off to find Tavia. We need to get ready for the fashion show. Love you!” Leila said with much enthusiasm. She walked off in search of her friend, unaware of a pair of eyes following her move.

“Bitch, you’ll get it. Showing up in the same dress as I? Nobody competes with me.” The mysterious figure said to herself. As Leila was walking towards her destination, the mysterious person tripped Bosco holding a tray of red wine. He tumbled forward and spilled the contents all over Leila who happened to walk in his direction at that moment. The mysterious guest snickered, “Serves you right,” under her breath. She dusted off her hands and walked off, Tavia’s eyes on her.

Leila screamed, “Ahh, what is wrong with you? Look at my dress, it’s ruined! How could you be so clumsy? Stupid! Do you know how to walk? Ugh.” She looked around and people started looking at her, she apologized to them and stormed off into the back room.

Bosco got up, his ears a crimson red, furious. He avoided the people who were whispering and started to clean up the mess. ‘She may be beautiful, but she didn’t have to embarrass me and make me look incompetent in front of this crowd’, he thought. ‘I didn’t even do it on purpose, I swear somebody tripped me.’

Soon, his friend and fellow co-worker, Jack Wu, knelt down to help him clean up the glassware and wipe up the floor. “Don’t sweat it bro, girls will be girls.”

“Thanks man,” Bosco replied. “She didn’t have to be so fucking vindictive. And to think I thought she was beautiful. Just because she’s rich….”

“Relax man, it was only part of the crowd. Look at this place, it’s huge. Just concentrate on your work, we don’t want to cause another scene,” Jack informed him. “It was just an accident.”

“Yeah, shit, I can’t afford to lose this job.” Bosco continued to clean up. “Damn it.”

Tavia was in the far corner of the room; she confronted the mysterious female and pulled her aside as to not cause a scene and anymore trouble.

“What the hell do you want from me?” she asked, twisting out of Tavia’s grip on her arm.

“What are you trying to pull? I saw you trip Bosco purposely back there.” Tavia questioned her.

“She was wearing MY dress! So I had to do something,” she smiled evilly. “That shit was hilarious though. Did you see the look in her face, classic. She was definitely humiliated.”

“Just for a stupid dress? You gotta be kidding me. You’re the biggest bitch alive, Myolie,” Tavia told her, venom running through her words. “Just remember, karma’s gonna be a bitch.” With that she stormed off to the back room.

She opened the door and heard Leila sobbing and walked over to her. She sat down and gave her a comforting hug. “It’s okay, it’s over. Just let it go. A dress is a dress. It can always be replaced. Come on, let’s get you cleaned up and changed. The fashion show is about to begin.”

Leila nodded and they both walked into the changing room where a bunch of models for the night were bustling about, preparing for the show. In addition to modeling clothes, they were going to model next year’s line of jewelry from Jem Jewelers.

Outside in the hall, the lights dimmed a little, the made up catwalk was lit, and music started to play over the speakers, filling the whole room. People started taking their seats and set their eyes on the catwalk. The waiters also sat for a break to watch the show.

The fashion show began; Leila and Tavia were the first ones to come out wearing matching pearl white satin tube dresses with matching gloves that go up their arms. They each had on a diamond encrusted mini tiara, differing in designs. They wore matching necklaces with a pearl outlined with diamonds. Every person had their own opinions and criticisms, they ‘ooh-ed’ and ‘ahh-ed’. Their appearance was alluring. Leila’s parents were proud; Myolie sat with her boyfriend, Ron, steam coming out of her ears. She was clearly jealous. Bosco was still upset about what happened but managed to put that aside as he watched the show.

The show continued successfully with various rare and valuable jewels modeled along with elegant, well-designed evening wear. By the end of the night, every guest went home enlivened by the event that occurred. It was without doubt, a night to remember.

The banquet hall was nearly empty except for a few lingering, drunk guests and their partners trying to drag them home and the crew of waiters who had to stay behind and clean up. Bosco and Jack were cleaning up the tables, gathering any glassware, salt and pepper shakers, and additional items that were to be kept.

“Great night wasn’t it?” Jack asked Bosco as he collected the salt and pepper shakers accordingly, into their bins.

Bosco sighed, “Yeah it was, except when I got humiliated.” He made a face. “I can’t forget that, there’s one thing embarrassing someone but another when you mark someone incompetent. That just gets me so aggravated; she had no right to do that.”

Tavia entered the hall and walked over to Bosco, “Hey, I just wanted to say goodnight.”

“Thanks Tavia, goodnight. You looked great up there,” Bosco gave her a half-hearted smile.

Tavia frowned, “What’s wrong?”

“He’s still hung up on that scene that occurred earlier,” Jack answered for him.

Bosco threw a rag at him, “It’s nothing.”

“Hey, Leila didn’t mean any harm by it. She was humiliated, too.” Tavia told him.

“Yeah, but she didn’t have to take it out on me,” Bosco retaliated. “You know how humiliating that was for me, she made me look like an ass, and a stupid one at that. You know I hate it when people test my intelligence.”

“Aww Bosco, you know you’re not stupid. You’re great at everything you do.” Tavia reassured him. She felt bad for him.

Leila peeked her head in, “Tavia, let’s go.” She looked over and saw Bosco, he looked at her with no emotion and she put her head down.

“I gotta go. She’s sorry okay.” Tavia patted his back and gave him a peck on the cheek. She waved ‘bye’ to Jack and left with Leila.

“Yeah, she should apologize to my face,” Bosco muttered under his breath and continued cleaning throughout the night.
