Leila looked up from her desk and asked, “It’s my first day at the restaurant, remember?”
“Oh yeah! Haha, good luck. Don’t let Bosco pester you,” Tavia advised.
“I can handle him,” Leila replied.
“Haha, I know you can. You get ‘em girl.” Tavia made a cat call jokingly.
“Haha, eww Tavia not like that.” Leila said though her laughter.
“Alright then, I guess I’m heading out on my own. I’ll see you on Monday,” Tavia said. “Bye Leila. Call me when you get him. What you’re doing is great. You can prove that you’re not that typical rich girl, materialistic and such. But who are you impressing?” Tavia asked knowingly and smiled.
Leila stuck her tongue out at Tavia, “Ha Ha. Bye Tavia. I’ll call you.”
“Okay bye Leila,” Tavia said and left.
Leila left the office a little after Tavia did and drove down to Chinatown. She entered the restaurant and into the kitchen. “I’m here Mr. Wong.”
Mr. Wong looked at her and smiled, “Hello Leila. You’re on time. Here’s your uniform.”
“Thanks, I’ll go get changed,” Leila said heading to the restroom.
“Okay, once you’re done, come back here and I’ll let you know what you’re going to do.” Mr. Wong told her.
A few minutes later, Leila came out of the restroom and bumped into Bosco, “Hey Bosco.” Leila greeted him.
He looked her up and down and she felt a little uncomfortable even though she was wearing black pants, a white long sleeved shirt and a black vest. She had her hair tied up with her bangs to the side. ‘She looks cute’, Bosco thought. Then he joked, “Mmm mmm mm, you look hot. I love a girl in uniform.” He raised his eyebrows at her.
Leila turned red and smacked his arm. “Quit teasing. It ain’t getting anywhere.” She stuck her tongue out at him.
His eyes went wide, “Hey, hey girl, stick that out only when you intend on using it.” He continued to tease.
Her eyes, in turn, went wide and she closed her mouth tightly, pointing a finger at him. She walked back into the kitchen. “Leila, okay now that you’re ready, you’ll be serving a couple tables to start off. I’ll have Bosco watch over you and you can ask him for help when necessary.”
Leila nodded her head and once she got her assigned tables, which were the ones closest to the kitchen, she headed to her first table. “Hello, my name is Leila. Can I get you two anything to drink?”
The elderly couple smiled up at her, “No thanks. Tea is fine.” The man pointed to his cup of hot tea.
“Okay let me know when you’re ready to order,” Leila said.
“We’re ready. We’d like sautéed string beans and sweet and sour pork chops,” the lady spoke up.
Leila wrote the order down and said, “Okay I’ll put your order in, thank you.”
The couple looked at each other and smiled, “I like her. She’s nice and pretty.” The lady said to her husband. He nodded in return.
Bosco overheard them and looked to Leila, “Hmph,” he muttered. “It’s not going to be that easy.”
An hour later, Leila was doing pretty well much to Bosco’s discontent. But when she was bringing the elderly couples’ hot red bean dessert, she lost her balance holding the tray and the dessert spilled all over the table, soaking the linen.
Her face turned red, “I’m so sorry. I don’t know what happened,” she said, trying to clean up the mess. Bosco laughed as he saw this and shook his head, “See I told you so,” he said to himself. Then he saw Leila rushing to get a towel to clean it up and she tripped on her own feet and fell face down.
“Oh poor girl,” she heard the elder lady say. Some others gasped and some stifled a laugh. Bosco snickered to himself, “See, rich girls can’t cut it.”
Leila wanted to cry but held it in. She stood up and went to get a towel and continued doing her job, trying to ignore the looks and whispers. The elderly couple comforted her, “It’s okay dear. There will always be tough times. You’ll get used to it.” They smiled at her and she smiled in return, “Thanks,” she said softly.
Leila managed to make it through the rest of her shift without any errors. Bosco came up to her and said, “So, I guess you made it through your shift.” He patted her back, “Nice try. You handled yourself well but I couldn’t help but laugh.” He laughed remembering her fall.
Leila glared at him, narrowing her eyes into slits. “You’re such a jerk Bosco. Thanks for your help, ugh,” she said sarcastically. He laughed a little louder. She wanted to punch him, “People make mistakes Bosco,” she huffed.
“I know but it just makes it all the better, a rich girl like you… ahh, it’s just plain funny.” He said.
“A rich girl like me what? Huh?...” she asked him.
“Nothing. Just makes me laugh.” He wanted to say ‘It changed my mind about some rich people. I’m proud of you Leila’, but his tongue and pride held him back.
“Whatever, I’ll see you tomorrow then,” she threw him a fake smile, in which he returned, and walked off to change.
Before heading of to work her shift at the restaurant that night, Leila thought back to her conversation with Tavia last night.
FLASHBACK-
“Tavia, he was such a jerk. He didn’t even help me at all. I didn’t need his help anyways but he could of offered. What a jerk. I want to strangle him, but he’s just too cute. Ugh, I hate it.” Leila complained to Tavia over the phone.
Tavia giggled. “Leila, Bosco probably didn’t mean it. You know how he is. He’s thick-headed like that. He’ll come around, just you watch. That’s how he is.” Tavia consoled her.
END OF FLASHBACK-
Leila sighed and got ready then told her parents that she was meeting friends. She drove to the restaurant, not really wanting to face Bosco, but at the same time, she really did want to see him. She sighed as she got out of her car and entered the restaurant, already busy with the weekend bunch. She got changed and started working, not really talking much. She tried to avoid Bosco without making it obvious.
Bosco watched her and noticed that she wasn’t like some of the rich people he’s seen at the parties that he works at. She was different, and in a good way too. He wanted to apologize to her but he didn’t know how. He admits that he has been a jerk to her a lot of times but like he told Tavia, Leila is just easy to mess with. It’s just all for fun. He doesn’t really mean what he does. He sighed and continued to work, deciding to leave her be.
Leila was refilling a pot of tea with hot water and was heading back to put it away the container of hot water when somehow she spilled it and burned her hand. “Oww!” she yelped grabbing her left hand.
People turned to the noise and started whispering. Bosco looked to see what happened and saw her run to the restroom. He ran after her to help her out.
He entered the restroom, luckily it was unlocked, and saw that she was running her hand under cool water. He walked over to her and she looked at him. “What do you want? You wanna laugh it up in my face? Go ahead, laugh. I don’t care.” Tears were brimming around her eyes from the pain in her hand and her heart. “It hurts…”
“Just let it run under cool water for another couple minutes. It doesn’t look too bad. And I don’t want to laugh. I’m not going to. This is serious.” He said taking a look at her hand in the sink. “It’s just a minor burn. Wait right here, I’ll be back.”
He came back with the first aid kit. “Dry your hand with this,” he tossed her a small towel. “Just pat it lightly.” She did as he told. “Come here,” he said to her and she walked over to him. He took her hand and looked at the burn and soothed her hand with some aloe vera. Then he applied some Neosporin and took gauze and wrapped her hand lightly. They were both silent while he was working. She looked at him and wanted to kiss him right then and there. Tavia was right, he does come to his senses.
“There we go, all patched up,” Bosco said, breaking Leila’s gaze on him.
“Thanks Bosco,” she said softly.
“No problem,” he replied. “And you know, I’m sorry about yesterday. I don’t mean the things I say most of the time. Just teasing, you know.” He smiled at her.
She smiled back at him and they stayed like that until someone knocked on the door, breaking their intense gaze on one another. “Just a moment,” Bosco called out. They got up and exited the restroom. The person waiting gave them a weird look, “Young people these days,” they heard him say as he entered the restroom, shaking his head.
Bosco and Leila looked at each other awkwardly and laughed. “He thought…,” they both started, “Nahh…,” they both finished and laughed again.
“Hey Leila, you can take a break for the rest of the night, I’ll take care of your tables.” Bosco offered.
“No, no Bosco. It’s okay, really. I can manage,” she said.
“No Leila, listen to me. You need to rest that hand.” He insisted, “I’ll drive you home then and I’ll tell Jack to cover for us.”
“Are… are you sure?” Leila hesitated.
“Of course. In fact, I’m positive,” he said softly.
“Okay then. You can take my car and I’ll pick it up tomorrow,” she said and tossed her keys to him.
Outside, at her car, Bosco opened the door for her, “Aww, what a gentleman. There’s hope underneath the exterior.” Leila teased.
“I guess I deserve that,” Bosco laughed, “Now hurry up before the offer ends.”
“Ehh, I guess I spoke too soon,” she giggled as she got into the passenger seat.
“Cute,” Bosco said as he closed the door. She stuck her tongue out only to put it back in her mouth as she remembered what he told her before. This only made him laugh louder.
He got in the car, “Where to milady?”
“Home, Jeeves,” she smiled widely at him. She definitely enjoyed these moments with him.
They talked all the way to Leila’s house and found each other to be great company. When they arrived at her house, she thanked him and waved by. He watched her go into the house before he drove off.
Leila entered her house and was met by her maid, Mrs. Yip. “Leila, what happened to your hand?” she asked pointing to her hand, worried.
“Oh just a little accident,” Leila answered. “Don’t worry, I’m fine. It’s been taken care of,” Leila smiled, remembering how Bosco took care of it. “Don’t tell my parents please. Well I’ll tell them if they ask but don’t go off telling them.”
“Okay,” Mrs. Yip said. “No problem Leila, as long as you’re okay,” she zipped her mouth.
Leila smiled at her and said, “Thanks.” She gave her a hug and went up to her room. She laid on her bed and turned her TV on. She absolutely loved how the day ended despite her accident. They went from not talking to talking and laughing, and the way they were in the restroom…. Leila closed her eyes and let her heartbeat take over. She soon fell asleep with a smile on her face.
On the road, Bosco was driving back to the restaurant in Leila’s car and he too, was smiling. ‘What is it, are you starting to like this girl?’, he mentally asked himself. ‘Nahh, that moment in the restroom was just nothing.’ “I wonder what would have happened if that guy didn’t knock,” he asked himself aloud, with a smirk on his face.
