“But you’re limping! I thought you told me there was a throbbing pain yesterday night?” Nadine pointed out as they walked slowly across the parking lot on a cool Saturday morning.
“But it went away quickly. No worries! Now get in the car. Ga-In’s expecting us in fifteen minutes” Ri In ordered. Okay, so she lied. Every time she walked, her left foot will make her winced. It hasn’t completely healed yet but she did not want Nadine to nag so she decided to keep her mouth shut. It amazes her how a tiny nail can cause so much soreness.
“Wonder what’s Ga-In so anxious about?” Nadine wondered out loud as the car pulled out of the lot and drove out into the street. “It better be something good. Can’t believe I had to wake up early on a weekend” she added.
“I thought you had a good night’s sleep?” Ri In asked, turning the steering wheel.
Nadine nodded. “I did. But the moment I saw those stack of notes on the table, everything came back”
“Still can’t find any firm to help you?” Ri In asked, stopping at a red light. The pain came back as she stepped on the brake and she tried hard not to show it.
“Nope. The kids have been emailing me all the companies they could find and so far two of them are considering it, but I doubt they will help us” Nadine said bitterly.
“Aww..don’t give up hope. Something will bound to come your way. And you’re lucky to have those kids in your class. I for once, have never seen Dana so…alive” Ri In told her.
“What do you mean?” Nadine asked, playing with her seatbelt.
“I know that girl ever since her first year in that school. She’s a smart student, always spending her time in the library and getting As all the time. But ever since her parents got divorced, she was never the same kid. She lost weight and hardly talks to anyone” Ri In explained.
“Really? When was that? She doesn’t look like what you’ve just described” Nadine said.
“A year ago. I heard her mother went off with some guy”
“Gosh Ri In. What are you, the gossip monger as well?” Nadine pointed out.
“Come on, kids like to talk when this kind of stuff occurs…and I happened to be there and heard it and so on” Ri In defended herself.”And plus it was juicy news, what do you expect. Dana’s father happens to be a business tycoon, and his wife just left him for another man who is probably ten times richer than him. I say, she’s being stupid. Money doesn’t necessarily buy happiness” she added, parking her car outside Narsha’s Coffee House.
“Let me guess..umm..your happiness still depends if…you and Yoochun are back together again?” Nadine suddenly spoke up and they stepped out of the car.
Ri In slammed the door shut. “WHAT?” she shrieked, causing a few passers-by to glance at their way. Ri In saw the evil smirk that was on Nadine’s face. “What are you saying? Me and that guy are totally OVER. Get it. And don’t you ever throw his name at my face again!”
“Oh puh-leeze. I’m not deaf you know. Ever since you came back from the hospital, you kept mumbling his name in your sleep. And to think you actually kept the lilies when you told me you wanted to chuck it in the bin” Nadine told her as they walked up to the coffee house. “So tell me…what kind of dreams did you have about him aye?”
Ri In threw Nadine a deadly look. “None of your business. And we were talking about Dana, and not that…faggot” Ri In spluttered.
Nadine gasped and then she burst out laughing. Ri In wished she could throw something at her but she vented out her anger on the door instead. The bell on the door actually came loose from the string it was hanging when Ri In swung the door opened violently.
“Heeeey!” Ga-In came out from behind her counter and picked up the victimized object. “Put it back!” she ordered Ri In with a stern face. “The shop’s going to be open any minute and if you don’t get it fix, you won’t get your free breakfast”
“FREE? For real?” Nadine asked, jumping on her toes, her ponytail bouncing up and down.
“Yeah, but since Ri In did something stupid, I’m thinking of charging you guys instead” Ga-In said slowly, tapping her chin.
“But Ga-In, be reasonable. I can’t barely walk and you expect ME to climb up this chair..which I think is rather unstable by the way. What if I fall and break my leg this time? Get someone else to do it” Ri In said, giving the bell to Nadine.
“What?” Nadine gaped. “Come on Nadine, time is running out. If she’s charging us, then you’re paying for it” Ri In retorted as she hobbled away. Ri In giggled to herself when she heard Nadine grumbling under her breath. She was about to climb the flight of steps to the second floor when Nadine stopped her.
“What do you think you’re doing? We’re sitting on the ground floor. There’s no way I’m going to let you climb you way up there when your leg is not properly healed”
Nadine nagged while Ga-In went back to the kitchen.
“But Nadine, our favorite spot is upstairs, by the window, overlooking the park. There’s nothing to see at the first floor” Ri In pointed out.
“ARGH! Why are you so bratty today? Fine fine. We’ll sit upstairs” Nadine gave in and followed her friend upstairs.
“And why are you so jittery? I know you’re thinking about work, but you need to learn to take time off. I read an article yesterday about stress relievers, and there were five pointers to soothe those stress times” Ri In told Nadine as they stepped on the landing.
“Let me guess, one of the pointers was to irritate your friends and make things go your way?” Nadine said dryly, as she plopped onto the dark green comfy couch.
Ri In hooted with laughter. “No, but that’s a good one!” she said. As Ri In filled in on Nadine about the pointers, Ga-In came up with their breakfast. Both girls ooh and aah at the meal. “Wow, wait, this isn’t on the menu right?” Nadine asked, munching on the food.
“Nah. It’s just to celebrate Ri In on her speedy recovery” Ga-In explained. She then looked at her watch and stood up. “It’s almost time to open up the shop. I’ll talk to you girls later”
“Wait, you’re supposed to join us as well. Now you’re making us feel bad!” Ri In called out to Ga-In who was already going down the stairs. The waitress simply waved her hand and went off to start her work.
As Ri In and Nadine tucked in to the scrumptious meal, the coffee house starts to fill up with its customers coming in for their breakfast. “We need to top up on our groceries later. You finished up the cereal and didn’t bother telling me about it!” Nadine was telling Ri In.
Ri In made a face. “Aish, fine fine. You really need to let loose some that tense muscles in your body” she said, sipping her tea. “I noticed that you’ve been nagging quite a lot these few weeks”
Nadine snorted. “My muscles are darn right fine. And my nagging is for your own good” she said and stood up. “I’m going down to get a bottle of ketchup. You want anything?”
“Yeah, another cup of tea for me, two muffins and oh, do you think Ga-In is still making those breadstick? Get them for me if they are available” Ri-In replied through a mouthful of scramble eggs.
Nadine rolled her eyes. “Why did I even bother asking?” she muttered, trudging down the stairs.
Ri-In laughed as she took a huge gulp of tea. “Gosh, Ga-In makes the best tea ever!” she thought as she felt the hot liquid cruising down her throat.
She nearly spit the tea out when all of a sudden; she heard Nadine gave out a cry of surprise.
