Chapter 21

Until My Heart Says So Part 1

“And I thought Friday will NEVER come!” Leeteuk whooped as he dumped his stuff on the table and plopped down on his seat.

Nadine slipped her laptop into her bag and nodded. “I know. It’s been hell of a week! I haven’t had a proper dinner this week” she told him.

“Hell of a week for you. I barely see you these days. You’re always cooped up in the studio and don’t spend time here anymore” Sun Ye commented swiveling in her chair to face Nadine.

Nadine grinned sheepishly while Leeteuk snorted. “She would rather sleep in there if she was given the choice. I heard she managed to give the room a 360 degrees makeover. I haven’t been there but I heard some the kids talking about. Hey! Maybe you should have a housewarming party for it” Leeteuk suggested.

Nadine gave him a disbelief look. “What? Leeteuk-shii, I think you’re exaggerating the matter. All the studio needs is few colors here and there to make it more alive” she said, zipping up her bag and slung it over shoulder. “I’m going off. Aren’t you guys leaving as well?” she asked.

Sun Ye made a face. “I have a report to finish or else I won’t be able to do it once I get home. You go ahead first” she told her, facing back to her computer.

“I’m waiting for Yoochun. We’re watching this football match at a pub later on” Leeteuk said, getting up and clearing his table.

“Yoochun…watches football?” Nadine wondered. “No offence, but I don’t see him much of a sports guy”

“Aaah..he may seem all up in his own poetry world and being quiet and all….but… that doesn’t mean he’s gay” Leeteuk said and laughed at his own joke.

“I heard that!” Yoochun spoke up, coming up the stairs.

Sun Ye and Nadine suppressed their laughter while Leeteuk turns red in the face. “Yah..Yoochun…I w..was only j..joking” Leeteuk stammered.

Yoochun nodded and went to his desk. “I know, but you’re buying the drinks tonight at the game. I’m telling everyone that”

Leeteuk’s jaw dropped. “Evil!!” he said under his breath.

Nadine shook her head and walked off. “I’ll see you guys on Monday! Have a great weekend!” she said as she walked down the stairs. She saw Jun-Hee packing up her books and putting it the drawers and then slamming the door shut. Nadine was choosing whether to say goodbye to her when Jun-Hee looked up and saw her standing there at the bottom of the stairs. “B…Bye. See you on Monday” Nadine blurted out. Jun-Hee stared at her for a while and said “Hmmm” before resuming back to packing her stuff.

Nadine hurriedly left the teachers’ room and walked over to the library. “How long is Jun-Hee going to be super cold to me? She’s so weird. What did I do wrong to make her react that way” she wondered as she pushed the door and saw Ri In emerging from the rows of shelves, looking slightly tired.

“Long day?” Nadine asked. Ri In dragged her feet to the counter and nodded. “Kids these days are so lazy! They leave the books scattering around the area rather than putting them back on the shelves. And even if they do put back, it’s the WRONG shelf!” Ri In complained, sitting down with a huff.

“And that’s what librarians are for” Nadine told her. Ri In shot her a dirty look. “Please, have mercy on me” Ri In begged.

“No I won’t. But I would rather you have mercy on Junsu instead” Nadine told her with a wide smile.

Ri In narrowed her eyes on Nadine. “What? Why would I do that?” she scoffed.

“You still haven’t called him and apologize do you?” Nadine questioned her, leaning against the counter.
“What are you? Spying on me or something?” Ri In shot back. She stood up and started arranging the messed up papers on the counter aimlessly.

Nadine watched as her friend stack a sheet of papers one side and then looked around for something distracting to do. She then chuckled when Ri In went back to the same stack of papers and started messing them up again and in the end placed it on the OUT tray beside the computer. “I’m not spying on you. I can tell you haven’t called him since you’ve been really jittery this week. And not to mention extra annoying. Plus, you keep snapping at people and that’s not good” Nadine told her.

Ri In made a face. “I hate it when you do the teacher talk at me. Bear in mind, I’m not one of your students!”

“But I’m you friend, and as a good friend, I’m telling you to do the right thing. Apologize and get over it” Nadine said.

“WHY should I say sorry in the first place anyway? He started it” Ri In shot back, banging her fist on the counter.

“You told me you feel bad after you got nasty on him when he came all the way here to deliver the books to you. And speaking of books, I’m not blind. I SAW you reading that dream book he got for you” Nadine retorted, crossing her arms. “Ri In, tell me something. Does it bother so much that he’s a friend of Yoochun? Are you afraid that he will be like Yoochun as well? A nice guy disguise as a jerk? Or is there something else to it?”

Nadine watched as Ri In’s temper slowly starts to simmer down. The young librarian gulped and shook her head, her eyes on the ground. “Then what is it?” Nadine asked softly.

Ri In took a deep breath and met Nadine’s eyes. “I…I’m afraid I might f..fall for him, that’s all” she whispered, her eyes wide with fear and worry.

“Oh..Rinnie. Come here you… little…muffin” Nadine said leaning across the counter and giving her friend a hug. Ri In ended up sobbing and Nadine patted her back. “There..there. You shouldn’t be shedding tears on my blouse, hello! It’s brand new” Nadine teased her.

Ri In pinched her sides and Nadine laughed and released her. Nadine shook her head as Ri In wiped her tears with her sleeves. “I don’t blame you if you fall for him. He’s a really nice guy. I was sort of attracted to him in the first place too” Nadine admitted with a shrug.

“Then you can have him” Ri In said with a sniff but Nadine rolled her eyes. “The guy’s only got eyes for you. Everyone can see that. I’m not going to steal your happiness away”.

Ri In frowned at her. “Who says he makes me happy?” she snapped, snatching her shoulder bag. “Every little thing he does irritates me and stop making it sound like he’s some lovesick puppy having a huge crush on me”

Nadine bit her lip and thought for a while. “Okay then. I suggest you give back the books he gave to the library for FREE back to him since you hate him so much. Oh, and that dream book as well. But come to think of it, why a book on that topic anyway? Did you specifically ask for that?” she asked as Ri In did a final check on the place before switching off all the lights.

“Nadine!” Ri In whined. “Stop confusing me!”

“So you’re telling me like him, but you hate him at the same time?” Nadine asked, raising her eyebrows.

“Oh my gosh! You’re so annoying!” Ri In told her, as she stomped off to the door.

Nadine chased after her. “Wait! Rinnie! I don’t understand why you’re holding back. It’s obvious Junsu WON’T be like Yoochun, and I don’t think he will hurt you”

“But what if he does? What if he thinks I’m a play thing? I have feelings too okay! And screw Yoochun! Don’t ever mention his name again” Ri In took the keys out from her bag and locked the place up. Nadine sighed when Ri In’s temper came back. It’s unlike Ri In to be having mood swings.

“So you don’t want to give Junsu a chance then?” Nadine asked as they walked slowly along the corridor.

Ri In jiggled the keys in her hands and shrugged. “I’ll call him tonight and apologize to him, no more than that. Happy?” she told her.

“Really? You’re just…going to let him..slip by?” Nadine asked her. Nadine saw the uncertainty in Ri In’s eyes and she squeezed her friend’s arm.

Ri In gave her a small bitter smile. “I..I guess I just wait and see what will happen? I mean, like what you said, life is either a daring adventure or nothing. BUT that doesn’t mean I’m going to go easy on him…even if—

“Aww come on. That guy just asks you for lunch! And feed you when you’re in the hospital and threatened to hold your hand if you don’t let him---

“Alright alright. I get the picture! I’m just saying that we shouldn’t…let…our hopes high” Ri In said, linking arms with Nadine.

Nadine gave her a satisfied smile. “Fine with me..but tell me, why a dream book?” she wanted to know.

Ri In took a deep breath as they made their way to the car. “Promise not to laugh?”

Nadine thought for a while. “Errmm..I can’t promise that actually” she admitted with a laugh, her eyes crinkling at the sides.

“Nadine!!!”
