Chapter 22

Until My Heart Says So Part 2

“Kick…no..don’t! KICK IT you---NOOOOO!!!!” Both Yunho and Changmin threw up their hands in despair and took another swig of their beer.

“Hyung, thanks for the drinks by the way!” Changmin said, patting Leeteuk’s back. The latter made a face while Yoochun laughed and turned to Junsu who was slouching on the bar, pushing his beer mug left and right.

“Yaaah Junsu! Why the long face?” Yoochun asked, taking another swig while the rest of the guys turned their attention to the football match on the LCD screen at the front of the pub.

Junsu looked up sharply from his daze. “Huh? Did our team won?” he asked, craning his neck to see the screen.

Yoochun rolled his eyes. “No. No one hasn’t scored yet. What’s with you tonight?” he asked.

“What do you mean? I’m fine as always” Junsu told him, taking a huge gulp of his drink.

“Woah, slow down there!” Yoochun warned him, taking the mug from him. “You look beat. Is the VP pressuring you guys again?”

Junsu shook his head and regretted drinking the alcoholic concoction. He wasn’t much of a drinker and his stomach was starting to give him problems. Yoochun shook his head at the younger guy. “Something’s troubling you. I bet it’s a girl” he said.

Junsu snorted. “What makes you think it’s a girl” he said, trying to pay attention to the game. “It’s just work. You know how it gets when the deadline is near” he fibbed.

Yoochun rolled his eyes and took off his spectacles. “This is Yoochun you’re talking to. You can’t lie to me” he told him.

Junsu glanced sideways at Yoochun. He was right and besides, Junsu was never good at lying. Junsu stared at the rows of colorful glasses at the shelf in front of him and then watched as the bartender poured a green thick liquid to a slim glass and then passed it to a lady sitting in front of him. The lady’s long locks reminded him of Ri In and he quickly banished the thought.

“I did a stupid thing Hyung” Junsu blurted out, his eyes still on the lady. Yoochun followed Junsu’s eyes and raised his eyebrows.

“What? Were you hitting on her just now?” Yoochun asked, jerking his thumb to the direction.

Junsu tore his gaze away from the lady and sighed. And then he thought of something. “Hyung! You know Ri In right? Since you guys work at the same school?”

Yoochun pressed his lips together. “Of course…why?” he said slowly.

“What was she like? I mean, is she the kind who gets angry so easily? You saw how…mad..she got when I was teasing her the other day. I mean, it was only a harmless request for---

Junsu stopped talking when Yoochun suddenly laughed. “You’ve been moody the whole day all because of this? Don’t tell me you wasted the WHOLE WEEK mulling about Ri-In scolding you? Cause that’s just…plain stupid”

Junsu’s shoulder dropped. “Fine, go ahead and laugh at me” he said in a defeated tone.

Yoochun cleared his throat. “Ri-In is someone who won’t get mad for a long time, trust me. I…know her for quite a long time” he told Junsu, fingering a scratch on the counter’s surface.

Junsu turned to Yoochun with a hopeful look. “You sure? You’re not pulling my leg aren’t you?” he asked.

Yoochun thought for a while before answering. “Well, Ri-In is sweet and all, but her mood swing can scare you at times. You just need to get used to it but other than that, she’s a pleasant person. I don’t think she’s going to stay mad at you forever. She could be in an awful mood on that day. Besides, you help her with something” he said, before finishing his beer.

“Chincha? That’s a relief” Junsu said. “It sounds like the both of you are close” he added.

“We’re colleagues…no more than…that” Yoochun told him as he stood up. “I’m going to join the guys to watch the game. Join us when you’re done brooding” he said and left.

Junsu thought he saw something uncertain in Yoochun’s eyes but then again maybe it was his imagination. He felt slightly better after asking Yoochun about it but he can’t help to feel bad deep down. The pissed-off looked that Ri-In gave him still gave him the shudders every time he thought about it. He wanted to drop by the next day to apologize to her for his stupid behavior but work just keeps getting in the way. He stared at the remaining beer in his mug wondering whether to finish it or not when his phone buzzed. He saw the unknown number flashing and pressed the reject button. He wasn’t in the mood to entertain anyone. The phone buzzed again with the same number and he rejected the call again. Junsu looked at his friends who were enjoying the game and was about to go over and joined them when the phone buzzed again, with the same number.

“Hello?!” Junsu snapped. “H..He..Hello” a small voice said on the other line. Junsu frowned. “Who’s this?! You have to speak louder” he told the caller.

Junsu heard a shuffling noise at the background and his annoyance started to grow. “Look I’m going to hang up—

“Junsu-shii. It’s..Ri In” the caller quickly said. Junsu’s heart skipped a beat. “Ri-In? How…Are you sure it’s you?” he asked.

“No it’s not, it’s the President of Brazil!” Ri In snapped. Junsu chuckled with relief. Yeap, it’s her alright. He glanced at his friends and then quietly stepped out of the pub. They won’t notice him missing for a while anyway.

“Hey..what’s up? Wait, how did you get my number?” Junsu wanted to know, leaning against the lamp post.

“Nadine got your name card so I thought…I call you up…to apologize... for being mean to you…”Ri In mumbled. Junsu could just imagine her pacing around; looking unsure and he couldn’t help but smile to himself. “Look, I’m really sorry for being such a jerk on that day” Ri In was saying.

“Yeah. You should be!” Junsu retorted with a grin. A few people walked past him and wondered why he was smiling to himself, but he could not care less.

Junsu heard Ri In let out a sigh. “Okok, enough making me feel bad already. I’m sorry okay. Look I have to go—

“No don’t!” Junsu stopped her. “Huh? Wae?” Ri In asked him.

“I...um..I was actually serious about…asking you out for lunch” Junsu admitted, crossing his fingers, praying that Ri In won’t get mad this time.

Ri In was silent for a while and Junsu waited for her response. “Ri In? You still there?” he asked her.

“Umm, yeah. I don’t think I can make it. I’ll..be busy. Very busy” Ri In told him. “Busy? All week? Are you sure you’re not avoiding me” Junsu asked, feeling a bit disappointment.

“A..aniya. It’s..work. Work’s getting in the way. Listen, I really got to go” Ri In told him.

Junsu bit his lip. He needs to think of something fast before Ri In hangs up. “If you don’t say yes to my lunch invitation, then I’m going to keep calling you—

“I’ll just switch off my phone then” Ri In quickly butt in. “Man, she already knows my game” Junsu thought.

“Fine, then I’ll come down to your school every day and pester you” Junsu said.

“Then I’ll tell the guard to prevent you from coming in. If it doesn’t work, I tell the Headmistress about a crazy psycho path stalking me!” Ri In beat him. “Hah!”

“Then I’ll find out where you live and stalk you FOR REAL” Junsu challenged her.

“I’ll call the police and they dump you in jail!” Ri In fought back.

“YAH! Why is it so hard for you to say yes?!” Junsu asked, determined not to give up.
“Because…. I don’t want to!” Ri In blurted out. He heard her muttering something after that but he could not make out what.

“You don’t want to?” Junsu repeated, abit astounded at her reply. “You don’t want to…but ACTUALLY you want to…. right?” he asked after a while, testing her.

Ri In let out a frustrated sigh. “God! You sound like Nadine! I’m HANGING UP!” she shouted and this time she did.

Junsu heard the dial tone and then sighed. He slipped his phone into his pocket but a smile spread across his face. Ri In’s voice kept echoing in his head when she said “Because….. I don’t want to!”

He rushed back to the pub to see Yoochun back at the bar, sipping his beer. “Hyung! If a person says he or she doesn’t want to do it, he or she usually meant the opposite right?"

Yoochun nodded. “Yeah, could be. Depends on the—

“WAHOO! She’s so in the game!” Junsu cheered, punching the air. He patted Yoochun’s shoulder. “Thanks! You’re the man!” he said and went off to join Yunho, Changmin and Leeteuk to watch the game.

“You’re…welcome?” Yoochun said to no one in particular.

As Junsu cheered with the rest while watching the game, he can’t help to have a victorious smile plastered on his face.

“Jang Ri In…game on! I’m so gonna win this battle!”
