“Thank God Changmin was there” Ri In muttered as she drove her car into the hospital’s driveway and parked it at the lot. As she slammed her door shut, she heard someone calling her. Ri In threw her keys into her purse and saw Junsu running towards her.
“You’re serious about the whole stalking thing aren’t you?” Ri In said. Junsu snickered. “Please, don’t flatter yourself” he told her as they entered the hospital lobby. “I’m here to see Nadine. Changmin called me just now and told me about it” he explained.
Ri In kept quiet and headed straight to the receptionist. “Nadine Arena please” she said. The nurse behind the counter consulted the computer. “Room 48, 4th floor, South Wing” the nurse told her.
Ri In thanked the nurse and went to the lift, Junsu following close behind. She reached out to press the UP button but Junsu beat her to it, their hands meeting halfway. Ri In withdrew her hand away and crossed her arms instead, putting on a blank expression on her face.
“So…how was the book?” Junsu spoke up, breaking the silence. “I didn’t have time to read it” Ri In replied in a flat tone. Truth was she had already finished reading the book – twice. Even though she has got the answer about her dream, she can’t help but read it and to her surprise, the book was an easy read, explaining things in a complex manner that she managed to read it in one night.
“Didn’t have time? Or couldn’t bother to read it?” Junsu asked, as the lift came and the doors slid opened. Ri In glared at him as he stepped into the lift. “Are you coming?” he asked.
“I’ll wait for the next one” Ri In told him as she moved away but Junsu stepped out and grabbed her arm.
“Why are you so stubborn?” Junsu questioned her, pressing the lift door close button, his arm still clutching on to hers.
Ri In wretched her arm free from his grasp. “And why are you so persistent?” she asked him, facing the front. Ri In waited for answer but the guy just kept quiet. She frowned to herself. She turned to face him only to see him staring at the ground with a soft smile on his face. God, what is wrong with this guy?! When the lift reached their floor, Ri In stormed out and turned to her right but Junsu gently pulled her arm and titled his head to the other direction.
“It’s this way silly” Junsu told her. “You suck at directions” he added as they walked down the corridor, passing one room to another.
“No I don’t”Ri In protested, unaware of Junsu holding her arm and leading the way. “You got me distracted” she said.
Junsu faced her. “Oh? What did I do?” he asked raising his eyebrows. Ri In scowled. “You know what you did” she snapped at him. Only then she realized they were holding hands the whole time and she quickly hid her hand behind her back. Since when did their fingers interlocked?!! She glared at Junsu but he pretended that nothing had happened.

“We’re here” Ri In interrupted him as they reached Room 48. She pushed opened the door to see Nadine in a sitting position while a doctor gave her an injection. Changmin was standing beside the bed, with a concerned expression. Ri In noted Nadine’s pale face and dried lips.
“Don’t tell me she’s been..nono..impossible. The girl’s already clean!” Ri In scolded herself as she sat on the edge of the bed. The doctor finished whatever he was doing and the four of them waited for what he had to say.
“Seems like you’ve overworked yourself Miss Arena. Have you been skipping your meals lately?” the doctor asked.
Ri In watched as Nadine slowly nodded with a sheepish smile. “That’s not a good habit you know that right? As a young adult, I understand work is important but you should be taking care of your health as well. I’m going to prescribe you some antibiotics and vitamins and take them regularly ok?” the doctor told her, patting her shoulder.
Nadine nodded again. “And avoid drinking too much caffeine. Switch to herbal tea, it’s a healthier choice” the doctor added before leaving the room.
Ri In turned to Nadine with a grim look. “See, I told you to take it easy! You’re not going to work on Monday” she said.
Nadine wanted to protest but Changmin interrupted. “Yeah, she’s right. You nearly gave me and SY a scare just now. Take a day off from work and get some rest” he said.
“And besides I’m sure the students will understand” Junsu added. Ri In almost jumped hearing his voice. She almost forgot that he was behind her the whole time.
“Fine” Nadine finally said even though she didn’t look pleased. “I’ll take the day off and stay home and rest”.
“And stay away from coffee” Junsu pointed out. Nadine made a face causing him to laugh.
“Wait, you mention SY was there? For real?” Ri In suddenly asked Changmin. The guy nodded. “Yeah, she was asking whether we would like to have lunch with her and that’s when Miss Arena just passed out” he explained. “You were not shock by her offer weren’t you?” he teased.
Nadine chuckled. “No, of course not” she said. “So uh, can we leave now? I’m actually kind of hungry” she admitted.
“You want to grab something to eat later?” Junsu asked. Ri In glanced sideways at him and he widened his eyes, feigning innocence. “Why you…sly fox!” Ri In thought. She knows what he was up to. Ri In wanted to say no to his idea but Nadine beat her to it. “Sure why not. It’s about time I eat real food” Nadine was saying as she slid off the bed.
“Um..could you guys give us…five minutes? We need..um..girl talk” Ri In said with a meek smile as she held on to Nadine’s arm.
Junsu nodded. “Sure, we’ll be outside” he said and gave her a wink before leaving the room with Changmin. “Woah, did he just…what was THAT all about?” Nadine asked when the door was closed.
“Why did you agreed to lunch? He’s---
“Annoying. I know. That’s what you’ve been saying about him but I thought you two made up already? What’s the problem?”
Ri In gasped. “MADE UP?! You’re making it sound like as if we’re a friggin’ couple!” she squeaked, slapping her friend’s arm. “I only apologize to him for being rude!”
“YAH! The doctor just jabbed me at that area!” Nadine scowled rubbing her arm. “Look, I don’t see what the big deal is anyway. It’s not as if you will be left alone with him. Me and Mr Shim will be there as well” she assured Ri In.
Ri In stared at her friend in dismay. “You’re so dramatic Rinnie. He’s not going to eat you up. Come on, they---
“Oh wait. Before we go, I wanted to ask about the whole “overwork” thing. Umm..you..haven’t been…you know..taking those stuff just..to…” Ri In trailed off, giving Nadine a nervous look.
Nadine’s eyes widened. “What? No, of course not! What makes you think I’m taking them again?” she asked in disbelief.
“Don’t get mad Nadine. It’s just, when the hospital called, I was a bit skeptical about it and all these thoughts came rushing to my head and I know it’s stupid of me to doubt you, and I’m sorry for--
“Rinnie. I’m fine, really” Nadine told her and looked at her straight in the eye. “I promised myself never to touch them again remember? They nearly destroyed my life and I’m not going down that road again”
Ri In nodded. “I know, I’m just..worried, that’s all. I don’t want to lose another person…” Ri In trailed off as her tears threatened to spill anytime. She blinked rapidly to prevent them from falling. Nadine came forward and hugged her tightly.
“Sssh. Don’t say such stuff. I’m here aren’t I?” Nadine said, stroking her hair. Ri In nodded, as she wiped the tears away.
Nadine let go of her and sighed. “Now you look like a puffer fish. The guys will freak out if they see you like this!” she said.
Ri In rolled her eyes. “Like I care” she said. “Alright then, let’s go eat” Nadine said, heading to the door.
“YAH! The least you can do is let me wash my face” Ri In whined as she hurriedly ran to the adjoining washroom and splashed the icy cold water on her face. As she dried up with a face towel, she prayed hard that nothing dreadful will happen to Nadine. She had heard stories of people going back to the dark side again and never coming back…alive.
She had already lost her parents, and right now, she does not wish to lose her one and only friend.
