“Guilty as charge” Nadine said as she walked over to the kitchen and opened the fridge. “Aish Ri In!” she complained when she saw the contents. There was nothing much except for a carton of milk, an unopened box of energy bars, two cans of Diet Coke, some leftovers and a half eaten apple. Nadine gingerly picked up the apple and threw it away. Lately, Ri In’s absent minded behavior was starting to get on her nerves. Her mood swings got worse after the lunch last Saturday. Nadine knew that Ri In was crushed after seeing Yoochun with another woman and had left the restaurant before she got really pissed off. Junsu had tried to come out with a good lie why Ri In left early but Nadine knew better. Nadine had also noticed how disappointed Junsu was when they left the restaurant. He was dragging his feet to his car and kept checking his phone, probably thinking whether to call Ri In or not.
“Gosh, Junsu DOES care about Ri In after all” Nadine thought as she slid the glass door and stepped into the balcony. The air was still chilly but it wasn’t freezing. Winter was leaving them and spring will arrive soon. Nadine took in the sight of the bare balcony which only consisted of two lounge seats. Ri In did not like the idea of having plants since does not know how to take care of them properly and Nadine finds it troublesome. Back at home, Nadine’s grandmother was an expert in gardening. When Nadine had asked her how she takes great of her plants, the woman told her it is all about time and patience.
“You don’t only shower them with water, but with tender loving care. What’s the point of having the best fertilizer in the world, but they ended up dying” her grandma once told her one afternoon. She remembered she was eight years old and was down with chicken pox. “You see, plants have feelings too, just like us humans. If you take proper care of them, they will blossom into a beautiful plant. Just like my little niño here” her grandma said, pinching her chubby cheeks.
"Grandma! You’re going to get the pox too if you touch me!” Nadine had told her. “But why are they called chicken pox?”
“Does it sound better if it’s baboon pox?” her grandma asked.
Nadine leaned back onto a lounge chair and smiled to herself. Her grandmother was such a joker. All of a sudden, Nadine felt homesick. She wondered how everyone was doing back at home. Back at the villa. Nadine has always loved the villa. It’s true what they say, home is where the heart is and the home also protected her from the evil doings of the outside world. Her naïve little mind always thought that the villa was a place of love, beauty and happiness. But as she got older, she got to see the uglier side bit by bit. Everything from betrayal, revenge, greed….and even lust. A blur image of a funeral flashed in her mind and she squeezed her eyes shut, trying to forget about it. When Nadine opened her eyes, she found herself standing at a patio, the villa’s patio which was overlooking the sea. The sea breeze and the sound of seagulls would have made the situation stress free but Nadine’s body was numb as she stood rooted on the timber deck. Why was she here? How did she get here in the first place?
“Nadine?” a voice called out from behind her. She spun around and found herself face to face with Donovan. Her best friend gave her a wide smile and hugged her. Her eyes widened when she felt his icy cold body. “You’re back” Donovan whispered. He let go of her and tugged on a strand of her hair. “Your hair’s no longer fiery red?” he said with a chuckle.
Nadine stared at his pale face and then at the tux he was wearing. Her eyes widened and she took a step back. Donovan frowned slightly. “Nadine…why…is everyone crying?” he asked, pointing behind her. Nadine closed her eyes and shook her head. She already what’s behind her. She already memorized the scene ten thousand times and she’s not going to see it again.
“Donovan..you’re dead okay? You’re not supposed to be here!” Nadine said, looking away and hugging herself. Tears were already flowing down her cheeks and she sobbed quietly. She felt Donovan’s cold hands holding her shoulder and she shuddered.
“Oh come on, how is that possible—
“It is! I was the cause of your death. Didn’t you remember?!” Nadine clutching her fist. Donovan shook his head and smiled at her. “I don’t believe you. Why would you do that? You wouldn’t—OH….What’s happening to me?!”
Nadine stared in horror as blood gushed out from his mouth. Donovan covered his mouth but it flowed through his fingers.
Nadine heard the murmuring and chanting from the living room getting louder and she quickly covered her ears. There was a ringing sound somewhere and it was getting on her nerves.
“Naa…Nadiinnneee..help…”Donovan tried to say as he fell to the floor holding his head which already had deep cuts on it. He was gurgling now as the blood continued to flow and splattered onto the timber decking. Nadine shook her head as she sobbed loudly. “Noo..No Donny…don’t do..this..please stop…” she begged as she fell down to her knees.
Donovan was reaching out for her, his eyes wide with fear. He made a grasping sound, as if he was being strangled and then he slumped to the ground instantly. Nadine stared at his body, her body shivering, not from the cold. “D..Donny?” she whispered. The murmuring and chanting had stop and all she could hear was the wave crashing to the shore. Nadine inched closer to his body when the ringing sound came again and Donovan’s head glanced up sharply at her. She screamed when she saw the maggots crawling all over his decomposed face. His skin was rotting and she could see his eye sockets as well. He pointed a finger at her and narrowed his eyes.
“YOU did this to me bitch!’ Donovan growled and lunged for her.
Nadine woke up with a start and stumbled off the lounge chair. “Ooof!” She sat up quickly and searched for any sign of a dead body at the balcony. “Wait..where am..?” Nadine stood up with jelly legs and held on to the railing. She sighed with relief as she pushed her fringe back from her face and felt her wet cheeks. Has she been crying? Nadine closed her eyes for a brief moment and she saw Donovan again. She opened her eyes and swallowed. What was that all about?
The phone in the living room rang Nadine went to answer it. “Nadine! Where were you? I called three times and you didn’t pick up!” Ri In screamed. Nadine could sense that she was panicking.
“I was taking a nap. I just got back from the gym and must have dozed off at the balcony” Nadine replied, walking around the house. She caught sight of her reflection in the full height mirror beside the toilet and noticed her red eyes. The ringing sound from her nightmare must have been from the phone. All of sudden she felt exhausted and wanted to crawl back to bed but she afraid the same thing will happen again.
“Nadine, are you ok?” Ri In asked when Nadine was quiet for a while. “I…No actually. I had a bad..dream” she admitted. As Nadine was telling Ri In about it, she can’t help but peered into every room in the house just to double check if there is no zombie present. She even looked under the sofa and couch, just to be safe.
“You don’t sound at ease. I think you should get out of the house and I don’t know…go shopping or something. Do something to distract your mind. Go over to Narsha’s Coffee House. Ga-In will be there to entertain you!” Ri In suggested.
Nadine thought about it.”Yeah, you’re right. Maybe I should head down to the supermarket and stock up on the groceries” she said, walking to her room.
Ri In laughed nervously. “You saw the fridge didn’t you?” she said and giggled. Nadine rolled her eyes, throwing a dark green blouse on her bed and searching for her black skirt. “Darn right you are! And a half eaten apple!” she scolded Ri In.
Ri In laughed. “Mianhe! I totally forgot about that” she apologized. “Hey, maybe you should do a research on that dream of yours"
Nadine sat on her bed. “I don’t think I want to. I’m not into this supernatural stuff” she said. “And besides, it might complicate the whole situation. It’s just some random dream, so I say just forget it”
Ri In sighed. “If I were you, I would freak out” she said. “Seeing a dead person is much scarier than the annoying faggot” she added. Nadine kept quiet for a while and Ri In gasped. “Omo! Mianhe. I didn’t mean to rub it in!"
“It’s ok Ri In. I bet the dream is nothing. Maybe I was too tired and the mind was playing tricks on me” Nadine told her.
“Hmmm…yeah could be” Ri In said. “Oh..I better get back to work before senior finds out I’m gone. I’ll see you when I get home araso?”
After they hung up, Nadine got changed and left the house. She hugged her coat tighter as she waited for the lift to come to the eighth floor. She hoped Ri In was right, that getting out of the house will be a good thing.
The image of the corpse was starting to creep her out.
