“Sorry about that” Yoochun said as they walked together to the main gate. “You’re taking the bus today?” he asked.
Ri In nodded. “I didn’t take the car today” she told him, stuffing her hand in her pockets. She glanced up at the clear sky and smiled to herself. “Spring is coming” she suddenly said.
“Yeah, looking forward to the spring break” Yoochun told her, stuffing the book back into his bag. “You have plans for it?”
Ri In was slightly taken back by his question and thought about it. “Umm..no. I haven’t thought about it yet, but I would love to get out town for a little while”
Yoochun nodded. “Yeah, good idea” he said and then both of them lapsed into silence as they stepped out of the main gate and headed towards the bus stop. Ri In let out a groaned and Yoochun looked up at her in surprise.
“I just missed the bus!” Ri In told him as they watched the bus drove past them. Yoochun chuckled. “You have something on after this?” he asked as they sat at the bus-stop.
Ri In shook her head. “Nah, I just want to see how things are with Nadine. She..umm…I think she mention something about making dinner. So I just want to check…if she didn’t burn the kitchen down” she babbled and mentally slapped herself. What the heck is she saying?! Ri In then noticed that her palms had gone all sweaty and her heart beat was racing.
Yoochun seemed to have registered what she had said and he gave her a small smile. Ri In faced the front and hoped that the bus will come sooner but there was a lot of conflicting thoughts in her mind that she did not know where to begin…or whether to begin it. Ri In bit her lip and looked down at her boots. She noticed a stain on it and made a mental note to clean it once she gets back home later.
“So umm…how are things lately?” Yoochun spoke up, breaking the tension. Ri In glanced up sharply and was about to answer when a midnight blue Peugeot stopped in front of them and the windows slid down.
“Junsu?” both of them chorused when they saw him. “You heading home?” Junsu asked. Ri In assumed the question was meant for Yoochun but then she felt Junsu’s eyes on her.
“Yes, we’re heading home” Yoochun told Junsu. “The bus will be here any minute”
“I’ll drive you guys home” Junsu offered, getting out of the car. Ri In felt there was an awkward tension in the air but she had no idea why. She looked from Yoochun to Junsu and noticed the opposites. Yoochun had a calm aura around him (he always does) while Junsu seemed to be clenching his jaw.
“You sure? Won’t be getting in your way?” Yoochun asked. Junsu shook his head. “Nope. Not a problem. Come on” he said.
Just then a bus stopped a few feet behind Junsu’s car and the driver honked several times. The driver was motioning to Junsu to move his car away as it was obstructing the traffic. “Hey, that’s my bus. I think I’ll hop on this. Why don’t you send Ri In home” Yoochun said quickly and before any of them could say a word, he had already sprinted off. Ri In stood up and watched as Yoochun board the bus.
“Ri In? You coming?” Junsu asked, breaking into her reverie. She nodded and quickly got into his car before the traffic gets worse.
Ri In told him where she was staying and she put on the seatbelt. Junsu drove the car into the streets and both of them kept quiet. After a while Junsu asked whether she would like to listen to some music. Ri In shrugged. “I’m fine with anything” she told him and then looked out of the window.
Junsu fiddled with the radio and settled on a station playing some mellow music. As the car drove down the highway, Ri In felt that Junsu kept throwing glances at her.
“Is there something you want to ask me?” Ri In asked, facing him. Junsu shook his head. “No, why?” he replied, grabbing onto the steering wheel.
“Cause I assumed you were going to” Ri In said, facing the front and taking in the scenery. “Well….your assumption’s wrong” Junsu blurted out and then clearing his throat.
Ri In sensed that he was getting agitated so she decided to change the subject. “How’s work?” she asked, fiddling with the strap of her bag.
“Good. So far so good” Junsu told her. “How’s yours? No Monday blues?” he asked his eyes on the road.
“No” Ri In replied and whipped out her phone. “How come you’re taking the bus today with…Yoochun?” Junsu popped the question.
“I didn’t feel like taking the car. And I didn’t plan to take the bus with Yoochun. We happened to bump into each other on the way to the bus-stop” Ri In explained and then paused. ‘Wait, why am I telling him all of this?” she thought.
Junsu cleared his throat again. “You’re close friends with Yoochun?” he asked. Ri In frowned slightly as she pressed a few buttons on her phone. “Not…really. Why? Did he mention something?” she asked.
“No..no he didn’t. I was just…you know..since you guys are colleagues and well, I assumed you’re close and then..you know---
“What are you implying?” Ri In interrupted him. Junsu gulped and stopped the car at a red light. Ri In noticed how jittery he suddenly look and was hoping he won’t get a nervous breakdown.
“Would you go out with me this weekend?” Junsu suddenly asked, facing her.
Ri In felt the blood rushing to her face and she could imagine her face looking like a tomato. She quickly put her phone away and unconsciously played with a loose thread from her jacket. “I’m not sure if I’m free on that day” she told him.
“Oh” Junsu managed to say. “Even for spring break? Will you be busy then?” he asked.
Ri In scratched the back of her neck, not sure of what to say. “I haven’t planned out for the whole week yet” she told him. “Why? Are you…planning something?” she said, choosing her words carefully.
“Yeah. I’ll be going to Jeju Island” Junsu told him. “For work?” Ri In asked. Junsu nodded. “Me and my whole team. There’s going to be an event there as well and they’re planning to re-open this old building to make it into a library and tourist center so I thought you might want..to..
Ri In laughed much to Junsu’s surprise. “You associated the library with me..just because I’m a librarian? Someone’s being stereotypical” she commented, leaning back on her seat.
“No! I don’t mean that. It’s just…there’s going to be tons of things to do of course. But since you mention you’re a bookworm—
“I never say I was a bookworm. Did I mention that to you?” Ri In interrupted again.
“You DIDN’T mention but I ASSUME you are, since you like to read” Junsu told her as he drove the car into her apartment building. Ri In suppressed her laughter when she saw how she was making things difficult for him. He only asked her a harmless question and here she was, twisting every word he was saying.
Junsu let out a sigh. “Okay, here we are” he said, sounding defeated.
“Where are we going this Saturday?” Ri In wanted to know. She saw Junsu looking at her in surprised and his eyes were shining.
“But I thought you said you’re busy?” Junsu pointed out. “What? You don’t want to go now? Araso. Thanks for the ride” Ri In said and opened the door but Junsu stopped her.
“I want you to go!” Junsu blurted out. “Now you’re sounding desperate” Ri In told him. Junsu slumped in his seat and gave her a puzzled expression.
“Yah, why are you speaking in riddles? I was only asking you out for date and you’re making it complicated” Junsu grumbled.
“A DATE?! This weekend?” Ri In asked, raising her eyebrows. Junsu frowned at her. “Yes! It’s a date. I’m asking you out for a date this weekend! It’s that so hard to understand? Jeez” Junsu muttered as he got out of the car and walked to the other side. He opened the door for Ri In and she stepped out, trying hard not to laugh when she how pissed Junsu look.
“I’ll think about it” Ri In told him. “But the chances of me saying Yes are 50:50. Don’t get your hopes high” she said before leaving him standing there in the driveway.
Before she stepped into the lift, she sneaked up behind a wall to see Junsu doing a little dance before stepping into his car, a wide grin plastered on his face.
Since the guy’s sincere about it….it wouldn’t hurt right?
