“What do you want?” Changmin snapped, facing his computer and flipping the file opened.
Junsu tapped his watch. “It’s lunch time! Hello!” he told Changmin.
Changmin shook his head. “Not in the mood” he mumbled. Junsu’s jaw dropped. “W…What? But it’s lunch. And lunch is about food…and you LOVE anything to do with food! Are you sure you’re Changmin?” he asked, leaning forward.
Changmin grabbed his tie without warning with a menacing glare and Junsu cried out in surprise. “OK!OK! Lemme go!” Junsu screeched. Changmin let go and gave him a smirk. Junsu gulped and sat on the chair across from Changmin and glared at him. “That was NOT funny!” he complained, smoothing down his outfit. “I almost peed in my pants” he added in a small voice.
Just then they heard SY’s voice outside and Junsu saw Changmin getting tense. “Quick! Close the door and pretend that we are deep in discussion” Changmin hissed, scattering a few papers on his desk, making it look like they were in a meeting. Junsu scowled. “Whatever for?”
“Just do it Hyung! I’ll…I’ll treat you for dinner later. PLEASE!!” Changmin begged. Junsu got up and did what he was told. Then he went back to the desk and both of them pretended to be engrossed in the work. There was a knock on the door and Junsu glanced at Changmin. “Now what?” he asked.
Before Changmin could answer, the door swung opened and SY’s mouth dropped open. “OMO! Mianhe. I didn’t know you guys were having a meeting” she apologized, looking uncomfortable.
“That’s all right SY. Is there anything I can help you with?” Changmin asked casually. Junsu gave a small smile to the young actress and focused back on the papers wondering why Changmin was acting this way.
SY shook her head. “I wanted to ask you out for lunch but maybe some other time then. Bye!” she said and reluctantly closed the door. Junsu gaped at Changmin. “You little prankster! You were actually avoiding her weren’t you?” Junsu asked, wagging his finger at Changmin.
Changmin rolled his eyes. “I hate to admit it, but she’s getting on my nerves” he muttered, clearing the mess on his desk.
Junsu gasped dramatically. “Aren’t you afraid she’s standing outside eavesdropping our conversation?” he staged-whispered.
“She wouldn’t” Changmin assured him but Junsu saw Changmin sneaking a glance to see if she was there.
“Tsk..tsk..but you can’t keep ignoring her. She’ll be by your side the whole day later on. Good luck with that” Junsu said with a wink.
“Thanks” Changmin said with sarcasm. “By the way, is Yoochun hyung joining us tonight?” he asked, referring to the baseball game they will be catching in the evening.
Junsu shrugged. “I’ve text him five times but he hasn’t replied to one. Maybe he’s busy?” he said, picking up the Rubik’s cube on the desk and playing with it.
Changmin frowned slightly. “But it’s so unlike him to be like that. I’ve just noticed that he’s not himself recently”
Junsu looked up from the colorful cube. “What do you mean? He’s still the same boring guy to me. Always having his nose stuck in his books. That guy needs a life!”
Changmin leaned back on his chair. “He’s not boring. He’s a mystery and hard to figure out, just like this cube” he said, pointing to the mind-boggling toy.
Junsu stared at the cube and he thought about the day at the restaurant and at the bus-stop. It seems like in these two scenes, it’s always Yoochun making the exit while Ri In lingers behind watching him like a…forlorn lover.
Junsu gulped and tossed the toy aside. Changmin noticed that he had went quiet and waved his hand in front of Junsu’s face.
“Don’t hurt yourself thinking too much about Yoochun” Changmin jokingly told him as he focused on his computer and starting playing a game of pin-ball.
“Does the guy ever date?” Junsu suddenly asked, scratching his head. Changmin laughed. “Duh. Of course he does. He went out with this…I forgot what’s her name..she’s this lady from a bar he met a few years back”
“Is he still going out with her?” Junsu wanted to know.
Changmin shrugged. “I think they’ve broken up. And what’s with all these questions? You’re not thinking of …dating him aren’t you?” he asked and then laughed to himself.
Junsu rolled his eyes. “Sure, when pigs fly” he said in a flat tone. He fiddled around with the paperweight on Changmin’s desk while Changmin continued playing pin-ball. After Changmin played a few rounds he asked Junsu whether he want to try playing but Junsu shook his head.
“Wae? What’s with the sour face? Your unpredictable moods are really starting to annoy me. You’re not going through menopause aren’t you?” Changmin asked with a bemused smile.
Junsu placed back the paperweight on the table and considered whether to tell Changmin what’s on his mind. Changmin cracked his knuckles and stared at Junsu.
“Okay, fine, I’ll tell you. You can go ahead and ridicule me after that” Junsu said before taking a deep breath. “The thing is, I think there’s something going on with Ri In and Yoochun but I have no idea what”
Changmin raised his eyebrows. “What…makes you think so?” he asked after a while, still not getting it.
Junsu explained to Changmin about the two occasions and he had noticed the same thing. “I want to ask Yoochun hyung about it but I’m afraid I might embarrass myself—
“You’re well-known for doing that so I don’t see that will be a problem” Changmin interrupted with a grin.
Junsu’s shoulder dropped. “You’re not helping!” he whined, banging the table in frustration, causing a framed photo to topple off the desk. Junsu bend down to pick it up and saw it was a photo of the four them outside Iseul High School wearing the school’s maroon blazer and white pants. Yoochun was standing at the left side of the photo flashing his usual charming smile to the camera.
“But why does it bother you if Ri In has a thing for Yoochun? You want to help her hook up with him?” Changmin wondered.
Junsu gripped the edges of the frame and frowned at Changmin. “NO!” he said defensively causing Changmin to be slightly taken back with his harsh tone.
“Jeez. What is wrong with you? I was only kid—oh wait a minute. I see what’s going on” Changmin suddenly said, snapping his fingers and grinning from ear to ear.
Junsu rolled his eyes and stood up. “I like Ri In okay and I’ll be going out with her this Saturday..well it depends, if she agrees to it. But the point is, I like her and I also think that something is up with her and Yoochun. It’s frustrating just thinking about it” he confessed, stuffing his hand into his pockets and looking slightly depressed.
“You’re not going to ask her on the first date aren’t you?” Changmin questioned him with wide eyes.
Junsu shook his head. “Of course not…” he said and then kept quiet, not knowing what to say. “I’m totally clueless right now” he admitted.
“Shouldn’t you be doing your happy dance right now? You’re going out with her and yet you’re bothered by something that could or could have not happen. Trust me hyung, you’ve got to take it easy and don’t rush her. Things will fall into place someday and it’s up to you whether you want to accept it or not” Changmin told him.
“But..what if Yoochun and Ri In DID went out together, will that bother you?” Changmin suddenly asked and then shook his head “No wait, scratch that. I shouldn’t have asked you that question! Your date hasn’t even started!”
Junsu laughed bitterly but Changmin told him to be quiet. “Don’t think about it too much hyung. Just enjoy your date ok? If you start bombarding her then she’ll probably dump you on the spot”
That night, Junsu lay down on his bed, staring at the ceiling with his phone in his hand. He had no idea when Ri In will give him the answer but even if she rejects him, he vowed never to give up, just like Mr. Jung.
