Chapter 36

Chasing Waterfalls Part 2

Nadine sipped her tea and placed it down on the table. The hot liquid nearly burnt her tongue and she continued stirring the tea as she gazed out at the sprawling garden beside the terrace café. It was the morning of the class she will be taking at the NAC and even though the class will only be starting in an hour’s time, she was already there half an hour early.

The room for the class was the same one she got the pottery demonstration for her class so she had no problem getting there. Nadine took out the brochures she managed to savage at the reception counter on the way here and chuckled to herself if her brother was here with her. Normally back at the cultural centers at her hometown, there are stands with colorful postcards up for grabs. Anyone was allow to take it and Nadine was one of the people who will take EVERY postcard on the stands not only for memoir’s sake but for the unique design and messages written on it by the locals and overseas freelance artists. Her brother had found her act outrageous and sometimes embarrassing watching her taking the postcards one by one.

“Sometimes I wonder whether we’re related or not” he had told her.

Nadine smiled to herself as she read one brochure after another. At the end of the stack was the event that Changmin was organizing. Nadine read it and then wondered what it would feel like to attend a fashion show, especially when there will be paparazzi’s around. With all the lights and cameras, she wondered how the people can take it, not to mention all those questions being thrown at them about the clothes they are wearing and what they like or don’t like about the designer’s new line.

Her mind somehow drifted off to Changmin and she tossed the brochure into the pile in front of her. Nadine massaged her temples and leaned on the table. It was true that she was already starting to have mix feelings about it ever since Ri In started teasing her. She never noticed the small things he did for her until Ri In pointed out.

“That girl can be so observant” Nadine muttered, glancing at her watch. Her class will be starting in 30 minutes time and she looked around the almost empty café. Majority will head down to the beach or somewhere else more entertaining while others choose to be someplace quiet and stress fee, and Nadine was one of them. The NAC was unusually quiet but Nadine bet that it will be pack when SY launched her new fashion line and perfume. She found herself thinking about Changmin again and the way he had held her on the night during the housewarming gathering. Nadine admits that she was feeling embarrassed and discomfort at the same time, feeling his arms around her to prevent her from falling. She blushed at the thought and hurriedly stood up, neatly stacking the brochures and then placing it into her bag. She was about to get out her seat when someone walked past and nearly tripped at her feet.

“Omo! I am so sorry. I didn’t see you there!” Nadine apologized, helping the person up. When she met face to face with the person, she found herself stunned with her features…or was it HIS features?

“It’s my fault actually. I was walking too fast and didn’t watch where I was going” the person replied in a deep husky voice.

“Okay, so it’s definitely a man” Nadine thought taking in his fair skin and the round eyes behind the framed spectacles. But she was more drawn to his lips. Those pout-like pink lips..how..did he get those?

“Miss?” the guy asked, waving his hand in front of her. Nadine was a bit startled and she gave him an embarrassed smile.

“I..um..is your leg okay?” Nadine asked the guy.

The guy let out a short laugh. “I’m fine. No worries” he told her. Nadine was still captivated by his feminine yet masculine look and she finds it hard to concentrate on what he was saying.

“Oh..good” Nadine managed to say. She cleared her throat and gathered her things. “I better get going” she told him and then walked away. She was aware that her face was turning a shade of red by the minute and she had to get out of there before she ended up looking like a tomato.

As Nadine climbed up the steps to the second floor, she had a feeling that someone was watching her but when she turned around; there was no one behind her. She hurriedly climbed up the remaining flight of steps and then jogged to the room where her class was held. On the first day, it was about the techniques of sketching. Even though Nadine was already a pro at that, she doesn’t mind joining it just to kill time.

When Nadine entered the room, there were only seven people inside, four of them were women around the same age as her. An older man emerged from behind a tall cupboard and motioned for her to take a seat. Nadine gave him a polite smile and took a seat beside a lanky girl who was busy texting on her phone. She didn’t look up when Nadine dragged a stool in front of the easel and settled down.

“Bummer. I was thinking of making some new friends today” Nadine thought as she glanced around the room, hoping to make eye contact with anyone but it seemed like everyone was either too shy or can’t be bothered.

The older man, who turned out to be their instructor, greeted them and started explaining how the two day class will work. Each day will last for five hours or even more if they prefer to and he will coach them in the drawing and painting skills in any way he can. Nadine and another guy raised up their hands when the instructor asked who was more experienced in the field. The guy gave Nadine a brief smile from across the room while the instructor clapped his hands in delight.

“I shall expect more from the two of you then!” he joked. He glanced at his watch and then clapped his hand once. “Your model will be arriving any minute and I want you to interpret his figure in anyway you can” he said.

“Interpret how?” someone asked. The instructor placed his hand behind his back and walked around the room. “Play around with what the model has to offer. Twist the torso, make the person look retarded, you can even turn the model inside out. After all, the sky’s the limit. And remember, there is no competition in this room. We’re here to express freely through art”

Nadine was digging out her drawing pencils and charcoal sticks from the bag when she heard the door being opened and the instructor welcoming whoever who has entered. “Must be the model” she thought as she selected a 2B and 4B pencil and a charcoal stick. She will begin with the usual light sketching and then start rendering it when she’s happy with the rough sketch.

When Nadine glanced up to see who the model was, she almost dropped what she was holding. The model who was standing on the small platform in the middle of the room was none other than the guy whom she had bumped earlier. He was still talking to the instructor, probably asking how he should pose. Nadine then realized that she was not the only one who in a trance after setting eyes on him. She stole a glance at the lanky girl beside her and found that she had abandoned her phone and was sitting straight up, her eyes on the Greek god. Even the two guys in the room were looking at him in awe.

“Remember, be creative” the instructor told the room. He then motioned the model to take off his shirt and Nadine could feel that everyone, well, the ladies mostly, were leaning forward anticipating seeing what was hidden under that baggy shirt.

It was as if everything was set in slow motion as the guy slowly peeled off his shirt, revealing his tone abs and arms. Nadine looked down and tried hard not to laugh when she heard a few of the ladies gasped. Okay, so the guy was BEYOND perfection. His looks, his body..and even his voice. It had sounded heavily to her.

“You may begin. I will be walking around checking up on you people once in a while” the instructor said as he walked away with the model’s shirt in his hand.

Soon nothing could be heard except for the sounds of pencils on paper and someone clearing his or her throat once in a while. Nadine did not start immediately however. She always analyzes the object…or in this case, the half-naked person, before drawing. She was studying the muscle and veins forming on his right arm when she felt someone’s eyes on her. She looked up and was immediately drawn into the model’s eyes as he kept staring at her. Nadine hid behind the huge paper on her easel and noticed her hands were trembling.

“Holy crap!” Nadine muttered, as she gingerly picked up a pencil and started doing a rough sketch. She tried to imagine how the model look like without seeing him but she failed everything she tried to do that. In the end, she ended up taking a peek here and there and he will be there watching her. Only her. It was starting to piss Nadine off but she could not tell the guy to watch someone else right?

After three hours, most of the people were done with their drawing while others were still struggling but the instructor was there to help them. Nadine had noticed that the guy had stood perfectly still the entire time. People might have mistook him for a mannequin if they did not take a look at him properly.

“He must be one lucky guy to be blessed with such good look” Nadine muttered as she placed a darker shade on her drawing. It was his hair that she was working on when the instructor stood behind her and gave a low whistle.

“Now that’s…ingenious” he told Nadine. “You want him so bad do you?” he added. Nadine spun around in her seat with a questioning look. “Ex..Excuse me? What?” she asked, totally alarmed by his remark.

The instructor chuckled. “The way you’ve drawn his arms overlapping the chest and that expression on his face. Very dreamy…and sensual? You may only be using black and white but I can sense the vibe from this picture. Do you think you can give me a colored version?”

Nadine gulped. “I…I’m not sure. I don’t think I have the time” she told him.

“If you don’t have time, you make time” the instructor told her, handing her his name card. “Call me when you’re done”

After class has ended, Nadine was the first to rush out, the name card crushed in her hands as she raced down the steps. She had never felt so…so…what’s the word to describe this feeling? Never in her life, had someone commented that her work was sensual and…BOLD. What makes the instructor think that she was emotionally aroused by that mannequin-Greek-model?

“What a pervert” Nadine muttered. “Who? Me?” a husky voice asked behind her. Nadine stopped walking and turned around. That model guy again, only this time he was smiling at her…and he finally had his shirt on.

“N..No. I wasn’t…are you following me?” Nadine asked, taking a step back. The guy shook his head and held out a green box. It was her box of charcoal sticks. She must have left it behind while leaving in a rush. Nadine took the box and placed it inside her bag. “Thanks” she told him with a small smile.

“I saw your work. Nice. Didn’t know I could end up looking like that” the guy complimented. “So I’ll see you this Friday? I notice the drawing was kinda incomplete—

“It’s mean to be that way” Nadine blurted out. The guy stopped talking and then he nodded. “Aaah. Actually…I don’t get how artists think, but, whatever rocks your boat. It’s a cool piece of drawing to me” he told her.

Nadine shrugged. “It’s pretty okay to me. I…I have to go actually. Thanks for returning my stuff..umm…I didn’t get your name---

“It’s Jaejoong. Kim Jaejoong”
