“Why are you on his side Nadine?! I don’t even know that guy very well. What if he plans to kidnap me or do a murderous act?” Ri In had complained.
“Rinnie! I don’t think Junsu is capable of doing such things. He’s a sweet guy and he will treat you well. Trust me” Nadine had advised her.
Ri In was still figuring out what the last answer for the crossword puzzle and she did not realize that Junsu was creeping up behind her. She was thinking of the answer when it struck her what it was.
“Betrayal! That’s it!” Ri In exclaimed as she scribbled down the answer and held out the puzzle with flourished. “I’m done!” she said.
“Well done!” Junsu said, clapping his hands. Ri In faced the guy and their nose bumped onto each other. She had no idea that he was sitting beside her the whole time. Ri In hurriedly stood up, tossing the newspaper onto the bench and straightened her hair.
“Sorry I’m late” Junsu apologized as he took the newspaper and checked out the puzzle that Ri In had done.
Ri In did not dare to turn back and looked at him. She still finds it awkward to be left alone with him, which is insanely funny because she had no problem during their first date. Perhaps it’s because she was far away from home and finds it unease to be with a stranger.
“Ri In? Yohoo!” Junsu said, waving his hands in front of her face. Ri In blinked a few times and cleared her throat. “Wae?” she asked, crossing her arms, not meeting his eyes but ended up staring out into the blue sea.
Junsu followed her gaze and then chuckled. “You want to go for a walk?” he suggested, stuffing his hands into his pockets and giving her a sheepish grin.
Ri In nodded and kicked off her sandals just as Junsu removed his shoes. They walked side by side, their feet sinking into the soft sand. Both of them walked in silence, enjoying the cool sea breeze and the sight the place has to offer.
“I’m sorry I kept you waiting. The meeting ended longer than I expected. Did you have a good lunch? Was it good? Mianhe, I wasn’t able—
“Lunch was good” Ri In interrupted him. Junsu looked at her and then nodded. “I heard the hotel’s restaurant give good service” he told her.
Ri In shook her head. “I didn’t eat there. I went out. I panicked when I saw the menu” she said.
Junsu frowned slightly. “Wae?” he asked. Ri In shrugged. “There wasn’t anything nice for me to eat?” she said. Junsu stared at her for a while and then burst out laughing. “You panicked because there was nothing nice for you to eat?! YAAAHH..that’s the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard!” he said, slapping his knee and laughing out loud.
Ri In managed to crack a smile and then something struck her. “WAIT! Junsu-shii..don’t move!” she hissed.
Junsu stopped laughing and then stood up straight. When he wanted to face Ri In, she told him to freeze. Junsu narrowed his eyes. “What? What’s happening?” he wanted to know, looking at her with fear.
“Just continue to face the front. Don’t EVER move a muscle. You’ll be dead if you do that” Ri In said in a low voice as she tip-toed slowly behind him.
“R..Ri In..stop playing games. What’s going on?” Junsu asked in a small voice.
“There’s something on..your head. I’m trying to get it off you” Ri In explained but truth was she was planning to run away from him and leave him standing there. That’s what he’ll get for splashing the sea water on her the other day.
“O..Ok. Make it quick!” Junsu pleaded. Ri In pressed her lips together as she slowly retreated back slowly. She glanced back at where the bench is. If she sprint and grab her sandals, she might just make it without him realizing that he got punked by her.
Ri In counted to five and then dashed to the bench and slipped on her sandals. She looked back at Junsu who was standing still in the middle of the beach like an idiot. She grinned mischievously and then ran down the pavement just in time to hear Junsu let out a frustrated high-pitched scream.
“Riiiiiiii Innnnnn….you little prankster!!” Junsu hollered.
Ri In took off after that when she saw Junsu putting on his shoes. If he catches her, she’ll be dead. Ri In had no idea where she was going and let her legs do the work. She ran past the potted plants that was situated outside the hotel lobby and then headed to the drop-off point. She nearly missed getting hit by a car coming in and giggled to herself as she made out of the hotel area. Ri In crossed the road and then ran down the twisted path that was leading her to an unknown environment. She felt like she was that actress in Run Lola, Run! as she maneuvered her way to what it seems like a flea market.
“Cool!’ Ri In thought as she stopped to take a breath and took in the busy scenery surrounding her. Who knew that Jeju Island could be so remarkable? The first time she came here with her grandmother, there was nothing appealing about it since they had went to a rural part of the city.
Ri In bit her lip nervously as she checked out if Junsu managed to catch up with her but so far, there was no sight of him. She grinned and started strolling down the street, stopping once in a while at stalls selling clothes, bags, accessories. She gasped when her eyes set upon a dark maroon corduroy sling bag with beaded designs on it. There was another one in white and she immediately thought of Nadine. “I’m SO going to get this two!” she told herself.
Ri In’s smile then faltered when she realized that she did not bring any cash with her. “Rats!” she cursed as she put back the items on the shelf and gave the man behind the table a small smile. “Today’s the last day miss” he told her.
Ri In’s heart sank. “Could you reserve this for me? I forgot my purse in the hotel—
“I’ll get those” Junsu’s voice cut in. Ri In’s eyes widened when he appeared beside her, fishing out his wallet and handed the guy some cash. While the guy wrapped up the two items nicely, Junsu faced Ri In with a grim expression. Ri In gulped and focused her attention on the bangles in front of her. “If you want to come here, just say so” he told her as he took the items from the man and started to walk away.
Ri In went after him. “Mi..Mianhe. I didn’t mean to..Junsu-shii! Don’t walk too fast!” she pleaded, tailing him. They had somehow ended up in a crowded area and Ri In was trying very hard to keep up with Junsu as she elbowed her way among the throngs of people. She started to panic when she lost sight of him and the crowd was making her feel more fretful. “Junsu-shiii!” she cried out as she stopped walking and looked around but he could not be found.
All of a sudden it reminded Ri In of the time when she was three years old, and her mother was still alive. They were at the mall and Ri In had gotten lost since she had walked off on her own to see the candy store. When she realized her mother was not there, she thought the world had come to an end. And that was exactly how she was feeling right now. It might be silly thinking that a young adult like her can get insecure at this kind of situation but there are certain events in the past that can still triggers a person’s fear. Ri In craned her neck to see whether she can make it back to the hotel on her own but the sky has already darken and feared she would lose her way.
“Oh man! This is so stupid!” Ri In thought, biting her nails and stood at the same spot. If only she did not played that prank on him. None of this would happen. As she stood there, a hand tapped her shoulder and she screamed thinking it was someone taking advantage of her. When she realized that it was Junsu, she threw herself on him and let out a sigh of relief.
“Don’t ever do that to me!” Ri In muttered, hugging him, not bothering about the stares people were giving them.
“So now you know how I feel when you took off like that?” Junsu whispered into her ear. Ri In slowly released him and felt her cheeks burning with shame. “Mianhe” she mumbled, looking down at the concrete ground.
Junsu tilted her chin up so that her eyes met his. “Have you been crying?” he asked. Ri In frowned and shook her head. She removed his hand from her chin but Junsu took the opportunity and held on to her wrist instead.
“Don’t ever run away like that. I’m warning you. Next time you do that, you won’t be forgiven. And no free goodies as well” Junsu warned her as he held out the items.
“I’ll pay back when we—
Junsu laughed. “Treat me to dinner and everything’s settled” he said.
“We’re not eating at the hotel right?” Ri In asked, staring at him with distress.
Junsu shook his head. “We’ll go somewhere else” he told her as they walked hand in hand to find a food stall. Ri In tightened her grip as they came to a more crowded area and noticed Junsu glancing down at their hands and then at Ri In. Ri In simply faced the front and from the corner of her eye she saw Junsu gave out his usual shy smile.
Maybe she could get used to being with him…just maybe…
