Chapter 38

Calm Down Dearest Part 2

“A little bit…no-no..ok..that’s it. Perfect!” Changmin gave a thumbs up and clapped his hands to get everyone’s attention. “Alright everyone, we’re going to do it one more time” he called out as he took sat at the front seat and waited for the lights to be dimmed. The upbeat music started blasting through the speakers and the models donning SY’s spring clothes strutted down the catwalk, walking in beat to the music.

“NO! No-no! That’s not the way!” SY’s voice suddenly screeched. The music immediately stopped and the lights went back on. Changmin and his team turned to see SY marching down the aisle, shaking her head. She climbed up the stage and started nagging on the models, much to Changmin’s disappointment.

“I thought she said she was busy. What is she doing here?” Changmin heard one of his team members asked.

“She’s going to drag the whole day nagging to everyone” one of them remarked, sinking in his seat.

“Sshh. Guys!” Changmin hissed as SY climbed down the stage and walked towards them. The models had gone back stage after SY was done with her scolding.

“Seung Yeon..I thought you said you’re busy?” Changmin asked, standing up to greet her.

“I was..yes. But my heart wasn’t at ease and I had a bad feeling arising somewhere. So I had to come down and check things out” SY said and then gave him an apologetic look. “I hope you don’t mind me barging in like this” she added.

Changmin took a deep breath before answering her. “Seung Yeon, I understand how you’re feeling about the whole event but you need to take it down a notch. All of us are working hard here to make sure everything is going out smoothly but I will appreciate it if…you don’t repeat the act again”

Changmin felt the whole place has gone silent but he could not care less. He hates to admit it but he hates it when things have to be done or stopped halfway. In short, he hated interruptions, especially when it’s something to do with his work.

SY stared at him in amazement. “W…Well. I’m really sorry that I am getting in the way. I promise you, it won’t happen again. That was not professional of me” she said, giving him a firm smile.

Changmin nodded. “I’m glad that you understand. If you want to make this event a success one then both parties have to cooperate. If there’s nothing else, I would like to continue the rehearsal before we go for our break. Shall we?” he asked.

SY nodded and took a seat beside him. Changmin was aware that his team members were whispering amongst themselves about Changmin’s little lecture to the diva. But he had to take a stand before things get out of hand with SY’s little complaining and whining.

“If you have a problem with the set, you can get back to us later. As for now, just enjoy the show” Changmin said to SY as he signaled for the lights to be dimmed again. SY nodded, her eyes wide opened as she focused her attention on the fashion show. It was obvious that it was her first time having someone to reprimand her.

After the rehearsal ended, Changmin turned to SY. “So? How was it?” he wanted to know, leaning back on the seat. SY looked uncertainly at him and then to his team members who was sitting behind him.

“You can go ahead and give us your opinion. It is your show after all” someone told her. Changmin nodded in agreement.

SY let out a nervous laughter. “Omo! This is too awkward for me!” she said fanning herself. “Well, I personally think the lighting at the stage can be improved in order to emphasize on the colors of the clothes the models are wearing. And I find the music a bit too…pop” she told the group.

Everyone murmured amongst themselves as they busily took down notes and thought of what to do on those weak areas. Changmin caught SY’s eyes and gave her a brief smile. SY returned back a small smile as she played with her beaded bracelets.

As everyone left the room for their lunch break, Changmin caught up with SY to apologize for his harsh behavior. “Listen, about just now—

“It was incredible” SY interrupted him. Changmin raised his eyebrows. “No one and I swear this is true, has ever spoken to me like that before. They usually listen to me with no objections and I sometimes wonder whether who’s right or wrong? Thank you Changmin. That was the nicest thing anyone has ever done for me” SY told him, patting his arm.

Changmin’s jaw almost dropped. WOAH. Who is this woman and whatever happened to the bubbly and quirky SY? “You’re…kinda scaring me” Changmin admitted. SY laughed out loud and Changmin noticed the wrinkles on the twenty-seven year old woman’s face. She maybe older than him but she definitely has the personality and energy of a teenager, which he finds it creepy at times.

“I’m scaring myself as well!! What you said just now, kind of gave me a shock in the immune system. You get what I mean?” SY asked her eyes wide.

Changmin bit his lower lip and nodded slowly. “I think so..yes” he managed to answer although he was a bit clueless. “Well, I’m off to grab someth—

“OH! Isn’t that your friend? The one who fainted the other day?” SY suddenly squealed as she pointed behind him.

Changmin immediately turned around and saw Nadine walking down the staircase, digging something inside her bag. Even though he was on the third floor and she was on the second, he actually felt glad to see her from afar. She was looking good as usual, wearing a long sleeve light green tunic and white pants. She had her hair tied up in a funky twist, with a few strands of the ends sticking out. But Changmin preferred her letting the hair down as it make her look more charismatic.

“She really likes this place doesn’t she?” SY was asking, leaning over the railing and watching Nadine crossing the lawn and making her way to the café. “She’s into the Arts” Changmin told her.

SY nodded. “It’s very rare to meet people who are passionate about the Arts” she said. “I need to go off somewhere. I’ll see you later okay?” SY told him.

The moment SY was out of sight, Changmin ran down the stairs and made his way to the café. He was strolling into the seating area when he saw a guy sitting across from Nadine. Both of them seemed to be in deep conversation although he observed that Nadine does not seemed at ease. She kept darting her eyes everywhere as if she did not want to make eye contact with the guy. Changmin could not see how the guy look like except for his short dark brown hair and the short sleeve black shirt he was wearing since the back was facing him.

Changmin was contemplating whether he should join them when he heard Nadine calling out to him. “Mr Shim? You’re here as well?” she asked.

Changmin nodded and slowly walked to their table and Nadine’s friend turned to face him. Changmin immediately picked up the cold glare the guy was giving him but it was quickly gone when Nadine introduced the both of them. The guy even had a hard grip when they shook hands. It was as if he did not want Changmin to be there.

“Mr Shim is actually helping me out with the Art programme in my school” Nadine said as Changmin took a seat.

The guy, who introduced himself as Kim Jaejoong, nodded. “That’s right…you told me you’re an Art teacher” he said.

Changmin took in the guy’s fair skin and feminine features but yet he was muscular and well-built at the same time. People might be mistaken him for a girl if they don’t know him that well.

“You’re still working on SY’s event?” Nadine suddenly asked him. Changmin noticed Jaejoong looking at him in surprised. “SY? As in Seung Yeon? THE SY?!” he asked, leaning forward, his eyes getting bigger by the minute.

Changmin nodded, already getting annoyed by Jaejoong, for no apparent reason. “Yeah. She’ll be launching her new clothes line and perfume next we—

“I HAVE GOT to get the invitations for that! Hey Nadine, do you want to go? It’ll be fun!” Jaejoong butted in.

Nadine raised her eyebrows and then glanced at Changmin. Changmin was unsure of what to say but the chirpy Jaejoong was already taken on the roll, laughing to himself.

“I know we only just met, but we can get to know more of each other if we were to go together. What say you? Mr Shim, do you think..you could..you know..get us to get—

“I..I don’t think I’ll be going. It’s fine with me. I might not be able to make it on that day” Nadine quickly intervened.

Changmin chewed his inner cheek and stole a glance at Jaejoong who was obliviously to the tension that was brewing. “Shall we get something to drink?” Jaejoong suddenly asked as he stood up.

“Ice tea please” Nadine told him. “Make that two” Changmin said, giving him a wide smile. Jaejoong narrowed his eyes slightly before excusing himself.

When Changmin was alone with Nadine, he turned to her and saw her troubled expression. “What’s wrong?” he asked.

“I’m sorry for..what he said just now. About taking advantage of your job just to get into the—

Changmin shook his head. “Don’t worry. I get that a lot” he explained. Nadine nodded and then leaned back on her seat. “That’s good. I thought you will get offended” she told him and then looked up with a small smile.

“Your new friend?” Changmin wanted to know. Nadine shook her head and Changmin was bit relived to see that. “He’s..my model. For my painting” she told him.

Changmin took a few seconds to register what she had said. “Model? But why him?” he asked, feeling a little bit envious. “I mean..look at him. He looks..like a girl” he muttered.

Nadine giggled. “Don’t let him hear you say that” she told him. “Actually that was my first reaction when I saw him. And I didn’t choose him. My instructor was the one who selected him” she explained.

“Oh right. You told me about the class you’re taking. Enjoying it so far?” Changmin asked, playing with salt shaker on the table.

Nadine nodded. “But I have to go back to the school tomorrow to finish my painting. My instructor wanted me to improvise on it and then put it up for an exhibition” she told him, her eyes gleaming with excitement.

“That’s goo---

“Drinks are here! And I bought some fries as well since Nadine was saying that she was craving for some just now” Jaejoong said as he placed the tray in the middle of the table.

“You shouldn’t have” Nadine told him as she took her cup and then handed Changmin his drink. He then noticed that there was no straw in it.

“Ah, my bad. I must have forgotten about it” Jaejoong said as he sat back down, not making any move to get back to the drink stall and take the straw for Changmin.

Changmin reluctantly stood up when saw one of his team members waving to him with an urgent look on his face. Nadine saw it too and then glanced up at Changmin. “You have to go?” she asked. Changmin looked down at her and nodded. “Unfortunately” he told her, trying not to sound disappointed.

“Well..I guess work is work. You better go before the boss finds out you’re laying down on the job. Am I right?” Jaejoong suddenly said, drinking his soda.

It took all of Changmin’s willpower to not to bash the guy’s head as he reluctantly walked away from the table.

What is his problem anyway?
