Chapter 4

All is Dust Part 2

Ri In was scanning a few heavy bound journals into the computer when she saw Nadine pushing the heavy glass doors and entering the library, a distracted look etched on her face.

“What’s with the long face?” Ri In asked, stacking the journals neatly and placing them in a box beside her.

“How long has Jun-Hee been teaching here?” Nadine suddenly popped the question, leaning against the counter.

Ri In thought for a while and shrugged after that. “No idea actually. Four to five years?”

“Any idea when she got divorce?”

Ri In gave her friend an exasperated look. “Do I look like someone who actually bothers to know all these things? That’s Leeteuk’s job. He’s such a nosey head”

“Yeah tell me about it. I accidentally hit some of Jun-Hee’s stuff and she got all pissed and told me to watch where I’m going next time. Leeteuk then told me about her past, mainly about her husband—

“Some of the fact Leeteuk’s saying are not even hundred percent correct” Ri In interrupted, as she keyed in a few data into the library system.

“But it’s true then, that Jun-Hee has a son?” Nadine asked flipping through a few color pamphlets stacked neatly on the counter.

Ri In nodded slowly. “Yeah. I’ve seen him when he was a baby. Adorable little guy, looks exactly like the mother. What’s with all the questions anyway?” she asked as she stood up and pinned her name tag on her light pink blouse.

Nadine was quiet for a while and Ri In raised her eyebrows. She knocked on the solid surface of the counter, getting her friend’s attention. “Let me guess. Jun-Hee actually reminded you of someone” Ri In said, crossing her arms.

Ri In watched as Nadine bit her lip and then she cleared her throat. “I didn’t say anything about it, and besides you were supposed to tell me something about you and Yoochun” Nadine said, changing the subject.

Ri In made a tsk sound and walked out of the counter. “Nothing happened. It was a fling alright? A short stupid senseless fling” she said in a firm tone. Her back was facing Nadine as she walked aimlessly around the library and started arranging the chairs and table at the Study Corner. Nadine’s high heels clicked on the cool marble floor as she heard her friend coming closer.

“Aah..let me guess. You fell for him didn’t you? You knew the get together will last for a while but you wanted more than that, but he didn’t seem…interested?” Nadine guessed, pulling out a chair and sitting on it.

Ri In gripped onto a chair till her knuckles turned white. “I don’t know how you do it Nadine, but I still find it hard to erase them from my head…and my heart as well. You have no idea how painful it is to bump into him on the school grounds and he acted like nothing happened”

Ri In glanced over at Nadine who was deep in thought. “Well, it wasn’t easy for me to get over it. It took me a lot of will power to get rid of everything that almost destroyed my life. I’m guessing it’s up to you to decide what you think is best. How long did you..guys…you know…” Nadine trailed off.

Ri In chuckled and sat down, joining Nadine. “Last summer” she told her, tucking a loose strand of hair behind her ear.

“Oooh…summer fling. Ooh la la” Nadine teased, causing Ri In to blush. “How come you didn’t tell me about this?”

“Like I said, I find it stupid and redundant. Anyway, we started hanging out during the summer break and when school started, well, I didn’t expect him to keep stopping by and well..the rest are kinda—

“Oh come on! We’re adults. You DID make out with him did you?!” Nadine butted in. She then burst out laughing seeing the reddish-pink spots appearing on Ri In’s cheeks.

“You dirty naughty girl! I’m gonna tell the Headmistress!” Nadine warned, standing up. “Wait till the Council hears about this”

“No don’t! Nadine!” Ri In cried out, gripping Nadine’s arm, her heart thumping two times faster and her alarmed voice conveying the situation.

Nadine laughed again and sat back down. “Relax. Your secret is safe with me” she assured her.

Ri In shot her a friend a menacing glare. “You better keep your mouth shut about this. No one knows about this, not even nosey head Leeteuk” she mumbled, looking down at her hands.

“You’re not that innocent aren’t you?” Nadine teased her again, wagging a finger at her.

Ri In gave her a withering look. “Stop teasing me okay! Aish, i shouldn’t have mention about it in the first place”

The librarian stood up and strode over to the counter. Nadine followed her from behind. “Okok. I promise not to bring up the matter anymore. There’s nothing to be embarrassed about Rinnie. We all do stupid stuff and trust me, we’re all laugh at this story one day” Nadine told her.

Ri In went behind the counter and checked the time on the giant clock above the glass doors. “I guess so. I feel a bit better letting this off my chest though, but I do admit that at times when I bumped into him, that sugar rush feeling is still there, sad to say” she confessed.

“Awww Rinnie. There will be someone out there for you, giving you that sugar rush feeling as well, but ten times better” Nadine told her.

“Yeah..and I’ll end up getting diabetes” Ri In said but her lame attempt only earned her a silent treatment from Nadine.

“You really need to stop doing that” Nadine told her after a while. Ri In rolled her eyes. Just then Leeteuk burst into the library, looking slightly flustered.

“Rinnie, I need to book a media room for the whole of afternoon. That wretched Yoochun just called saying he will be on leave today and I have to take over his class..AGAIN. I’m going to kill him when he gets back tomorrow” Leeteuk babbled furiously.

“He’s been missing for almost two weeks. Where did he go?” Nadine wondered.

“Why? Missing him already?” Leeteuk asked, giving her a mischievous grin. Nadine gave him a “Stop-your-nonsense” look as she exited the library.

“Wha—Hey, wait for me. Rinnie, don’t forget! Media room, afternoon!” Leeteuk said before following Nadine to the Assembly Hall.

Ri In jotted down Leeteuk’s booking and her eyes fell upon a purple sachet stashed in the drawer where she usually kept the spare keys. She gingerly fished it out and the musky scent brought back memories of her and Yoochun. She remembered it was filled with petals of some flower that he had picked it out and she had added a few droplets of essential oil in it. Ri In then tossed the sachet in the wastepaper basket along with the sweet wrappers and overdue receipts.
