“She must be really tired” Junsu noted as he placed his arms around her and Ri In cuddled in closer, her left arm resting on his chest.
Junsu placed his chin on top of her head and played with her silky hair as he admired the view in front of him. Both of them were resting on the hammock at a shaded area just a few meters away from the beach. To Junsu, it was more like an afternoon nap for Ri In. It was their last day at Jeju Island and they will be taking the night flight back home. When Junsu had called Ri In’s room this morning, there was no answer and he had started to get worried. The girl was forever disappearing and did not bother telling him where she would go. He still could not forget the hug that she had given him the other night after the game of hide-and-seek that she had played on him.
“Cheeky little imp” Junsu muttered as he removed a stray strand of hair from her face. He tucked it behind her ear and then kept his eyes on her face. His fingertips touched her delicate skin on her forehead and then ran down to her cheeks and then to her lips. Junsu eyes darted from her lips to her closed eyes. Will she wake up all of a sudden and slapped him if he gave her a kiss?
Junsu chuckled to himself and kissed her forehead instead. He won’t take the risk. The first kiss he and Ri In will have will be a memorable one. He should save it for later. He glanced around the beach and noticed that it was getting slightly crowded with visitors from the Seogwipo Kal Hotel coming down to enjoy their day. Junsu was glad that the company had selected the hotel for their business trip since it was located at the southeastern coast which means three things. Sun, sand and the beach. Even though it was a two day trip, he and Ri In had ended up spending most of their time at the beach. When they first came here, Junsu had to go for a short meeting but ended up having to stay longer much to his disappointment. He was supposed to have lunch with Ri In on that day and had to miss it. It was a good thing that Ri In was an independent person and had told him she will be fine by herself.
Ri In started mumbling something and Junsu glanced down at her but she went back to sleep again. Junsu arm was starting to get cramp from the same position but he did not want to move for fear of waking her up. Ri In had actually woken up early in the morning to use the gym and had gone swimming in the indoor swimming pool. When he bumped into her at the corridor, she was wearing a thick black bathrobe with her hair in a wet tangled mess.
“So the lazy bum is finally up!” Ri In had told him, standing outside her room and grinning at him.
“And you went off without telling me..again!” Junsu grumbled, rubbing his sleepy eyes and leaning on the door.
Ri In shrugged. “I did call you, but there was no answer” she told him, stuffing her hands into the pockets. “I didn’t want to keep bothering you, so I went on my own”
Junsu rolled his eyes. “What time was that?” he asked. “I think it was around seven?” Ri In answered him. Junsu gawked at her. “W..What? Ri In, this is supposed to be a break for you. You’re supposed to sleep in!” he pointed out.
Ri In scowled. “But it’s the last day today. And I wanted to get up bright and early and do some shopping and exploring before we head home” she explained.
And that was what exactly they did. Junsu had told her to meet at the lobby in half an hour’s time while he got changed. They had spent half the day going to the shopping district area and eating the delicacies. Throughout the journey, Junsu can’t help but to laugh at the way Ri In kept oohing and aahing at the stuff they had seen. From the different types of food and clothes and shoes and bags. At the end of the day, both of their feet got sore from all the walking. After they had dumped their shopping bags in their respective rooms, Junsu had suggested going down to the beach.
“You really like the beach?” Ri In had asked him, as they walked together, the waves crashing at their feet. Junsu nodded. “It’s nice isn’t it? It’s so far away from all those hectic places and coming here makes me forget everything” he told her
Ri In nodded. “True. It’s surprisingly crowded today don’t you think?” she asked, shielding her eyes from the afternoon sun glaring down at them.
“I think there’s going to be a performance over there, but I’m not sure what time” Junsu told her as he pointed out to the mini stage set up at the other side of the beach.
Ri In stifled a yawn. “Cool!” she slurred, rubbing her eyes. “You’re tired?” Junsu asked, looking at her. Ri In nodded and crossed her arms. “But its way too far to walk back to the hotel. And I kind of want to watch whatever performance there is” she told him.
Junsu had found the hand woven hammock off the beach area and told Ri In to get on. “What? N..No way” she stuttered looking around. “I don’t …feel comfortable just sleeping there…in public. And besides, everyone will watch” she mumbled, looking around the area.
Junsu laughed and then grabbed her arm. “Fine. I’ll make sure you’re safe” he said as he got on and pulled Ri In beside him. Ri In opened her mouth to protest but then sat beside him in the end. Without him realizing, Ri In had fallen fast asleep beside him, and here he was watching over here. The Sleeping Beauty. Junsu chuckled as Ri In shifted her body closer to him and absentmindedly hugged his waist, treating him like a bolster. Their feet ended up intertwined with each other and Junsu wished this moment will never end, as he leaned on Ri In’s head. Just then, he heard someone playing a flute. He turned towards the direction of the sound and saw that the performance was about to start. He glanced at Ri In but he did not have the heart to wake her up. She just seemed so serene.
As the music started playing, Junsu immediately recognized it as one of those songs from Secret Garden. He wasn’t into neo-classical or new age music but he heard it once at Yoochun’s apartment. He had told him that it was a boring piece of music but he got hooked on it in the end because of the haunting voice together with the violin and flute. A few people had already gathered in front of the stage watching the band play.
Junsu felt Ri In stirring in her sleep and checked to see if she has awake but she was still sleeping. She started mumbling again and Junsu removed the hair that had fallen over her face. He was stroking the hair when he was startled with what she was saying.
“Mmmff..saranghae…” Ri In mumbled. Junsu glanced down at her, looking slightly surprised. Even though he knew that Ri In was talking in her sleep, his heart was beating very fast upon hearing that. What was she dreaming about?
“N..Noc…turne…” Ri In mumbled again and Junsu realized that Ri In was singing to the song. “You know this song as well?” Junsu whispered, leaning his chin on her head.
“Mmmff…” Ri In muttered. “..Stop it…” she continued, swatting her arm and then hitting Junsu’s stomach. Junsu gasped and glanced down at her. She’s even a bully even when she’s sleeping! Unbelievable.
“Ri In…Ri In…wake up” Junsu said softly as he shook her shoulders gently but Ri In was still in a deep sleep.
“…Saranghae…Oppa..” Ri In whispered as she hugged Junsu’s waist.
Junsu had no idea whether to laugh or just sat there clueless as he stared at the girl. He suddenly realized that the Nocturne song has stopped playing and they were playing a different song.
“..Oppa…don’t leave me..please” Ri In whimpered in her sleep and that’s when Junsu felt something wet on his shirt. He soon realized that there were tears streaming down her face.
“Ri In…why are you crying?” Junsu asked, wiping the tears on her face. Ri In started sobbing this time and held on tighter to Junsu.
“Ssssh..Ri In, don’t cry” Junsu said. He was wondering whether Ri In could hear him in her sleep when what she said next caused his blood to freeze.
“Yoochun oppa…don’t leave..me..” Ri In whispered.
Junsu mouth was hanging opened when she said that. “Oh…” he managed to say as he looked at Ri In’s tear stricken face.
All of a sudden, someone hit the cymbals and Ri In woke up with a jolt. “W..What was that? What happened?” she asked, sitting up and frantically looking around.
“The performance started a few minutes ago. I tried waking you up but ….” Junsu was still trying to absorb the fact that Ri In just called out his friend’s name. In her sleep. She was dreaming about him the whole time?
Ri In patted her hair and then felt her face. “Why is my face wet?” she asked out loud. “You..were..um..crying?” Junsu told her, sitting up and stretching his back.
Ri In frowned and then quickly got off the hammock. “What’s the rush?” Junsu asked as she put on her sandals.
“I haven’t …pack my stuff yet” Ri In told him. “Wait, don’t you want to watch the performance? And besides, we still have five hours left” Junsu pointed out, getting off the hammock.
Ri In seemed hesitant at first so Junsu took her arm and dragged her to where the people were gathered, watching the performance. “Junsu-shii..” Ri In started to say.
“Hmmm?”
“I…You..I didn’t say anything or do anything embarrass while I was sleeping right? Because I have a tendency to do that sometimes” Ri In admitted.
Junsu chuckled. “No…but you did snore a little” he teased her. Ri In mouth fell opened and she was about to punch his shoulder when Junsu was quick enough to grab her fist. “Must you be so violent?” he asked her.
Ri In rolled her eyes and they watched the performance in silent. “They’re playing most of the songs from Secret Garden” she commented after a while, smiling to herself.
“You listen to neo-classic?” Junsu asked. Ri In nodded. “A..friend of mine…told me to have a go..and I kind of like it” she said. Junsu noticed that she was choosing her words carefully as she speaks.
Junsu wanted to ask which friend recommended her to listen to it but he kept his mouth shut. As much as he wants to know what the deal with Ri In and Yoochun is, he told himself that it was better to lay low for a while.
But for how long can Junsu keep his mouth shut when he had a feeling that he was losing to something…or someone…
