Chapter 43

Two Worlds Part 1

“You’re sure you’re okay? You want me to get anything on the way home?” Nadine asked. She balanced the phone between her ear and shoulder as she keyed in her students’ grades inside the school system. Ri In had decided to take the day off ever since her major breakdown from yesterday’s news and Nadine was making sure she was alright.

“I’ll be fine Nadine. You don’t have to trouble yourself” Ri In told her. “And besides, Junsu said he’s going to take me out..for dinner” she added. Nadine smiled to herself imagining Ri In blushing.

“Aaaah. I see” Nadine said and she heard Ri In laughing to herself. “But you still haven’t given me in the full details yet. I want to know EVERYTHING when I get home okay?”

Ri In groaned. “Do I have to?” she whined. “Of course you do! I don’t want to be left on the shelf not knowing anything” Nadine told her.

“But it’s SO tiring to repeat the same thing over and over again” Ri In pointed out.

“Excuses” Nadine said. She stopped talking when she saw Yoochun climbing up the stairs, making his way to his desk. “Hey, I have to go. The kids are waiting for me”

“Adios a mi amigo!” Ri In said before laughing out loud. “I did get that right huh?”

Nadine laughed at her attempt. “Almost” she said. When she hung up, Yoochun was already stationed behind his computer, doing his usual work, his back facing her.

Nadine glanced at the time and realized it was the time to meet her students at the studio. They had told her that there’s big news waiting for her and she was wondering what it is.

As Nadine walked past Yoochun’s table, the guy cleared his throat causing her to turn behind. Their eyes caught and Nadine was the first to look away as she proceeded to walk down the steps.

“I didn’t mean to hurt her” Yoochun spoke up all of a sudden. Nadine paused at the foot of the steps, hanging on to the handrail. She turned to him with a doubtful
look. “Really? I was just wondering what was going through your head before all hell breaks loose” she told him with a hint of sarcasm.

Yoochun sighed and Nadine regretted saying that. “I’m sorry Yoochun. I didn’t mean to say that” she apologized. “But, at least it’s clear now. She’s already..moving on. And so should you” she said, giving him a reassuring smile.

Yoochun closed his eyes for a brief moment. “I..I just wish I could turn back time..and start all over again” he mumbled, loud enough for Nadine to hear.

“Don’t we all?” Nadine said, crossing her arms. “But we still need to learn to get over it right? No matter how painful it is” she added.

Yoochun looked at the papers in front of him and then at Nadine. “I’m glad she’s doing fine..despite of what happened” he admitted.

Nadine shrugged. “Well, she is a fighter” she said, descending down the steps. “I’ll see you tomorrow Yoochun. Don’t stay up too late!” she told him.

As Nadine strode over to the Studio, she thought about the conversation she had with Yoochun. Even though they are sitting quite close to each other, they hardly talk to each other since he’s having classes in the morning and hers will be in the afternoon. She always thought he was a reserved kind of guy but having that 5 minute prep talk..was kind of nice though. At least, he’s a lot friendlier compared to Jun-Hee whose ice cold façade was still a mystery to her.

“She’s here! She’s here!” Nadine heard Taemin’s voice as she stepped into the Studio. The students scurried like little mice when they saw her and Nadine raised an eyebrow seeing them like that.

“What’s going on here?” Nadine questioned them as they assembled themselves in the middle of them room. “Let me guess. One of you guys broke the kiln?” she asked them, crossing her arms.

Dana snorted while the rest of the class laughed. “No way. Why we would do that? Well, except for Taemin that is. He’s a walking disaster as we all know” she said causing the class to erupt into laughter while Taemin scowled at her.

“Alright then. What’s the big news?” Nadine asked, getting impatient. Taemin took out a sheet of paper from behind him and Nadine realized that it was poster. Taemin gave it to her and with a gleeful expression. As Nadine read it, she could hear the class murmuring in excitement. “You’re not serious aren’t you?” Nadine asked the whole class. “A competition? Really?”

“Of course we are! We already signed up for it” Yee- Jin holding up the application form proudly. Nadine gasped. “You guys! We’re supposed to discuss this together. Whose idea was it to enter the competition?” she demanded.

Everyone looked at each other and Nadine nodded. “It was unanimous?” she questioned them and everyone mumbled a Yes.
Nadine glanced at the poster and sighed. “Well, I guess there’s no turning back now since you’ve already applied for it. But are you sure you guys are ready for this? There are different categories here. Which one are—

“Don’t worry about that! We have EVERYTHING under control. We just want your consent to see if it’s OK or not” Dana was saying.

“What’s the point of asking for my consent when you guys already acted on your own in the first place” Nadine pointed out and the class laughed to themselves.
“I want the full details at tomorrow’s class, get it?” Nadine told them before leaving the room. “Yes ma’am” everyone said.

As Nadine walked back to the teacher’s room, she shook her head at her students’ enthusiasm at entering the art competition organized by the Fine Arts Society at the end of the month. She was pleased knowing that her students are getting interested in the arts scene but she wasn’t the one for surprises especially when she’s left in the unknown. What will the Headmistresses say if she founds out about it? Will she like the idea?

“Oh crap. I forgot to read about the fee!” Nadine thought as she paused at the corridor. “Was that a fee in the first place?” she asked herself, leaning on the wall. Just then her phone rang and she flipped it opened and froze for a while, seeing Jaejoong’s name flashing on the screen. She answered after the fifth ring.

“Nadine?” Jaejoong asked. Nadine nodded and then mentally slapped herself. “Y..Yes..speaking” she stammered, clearing her throat a few times.

Jaejoong let out a low husky laugh making Nadine’s stomach do a somersault a few times. “What’s up” Nadine asked, walking down the steps.

“Turn to your right” Jaejoong told her. Nadine did as she was told he saw him leaning against his red Aston Martin at the parking lot. “What are you doing here?” she asked, slipping her phone back into her pocket and walking towards him.

“Thought I take you out for dinner. I saw what you did to the painting” Jaejoong told her. Nadine laughed. “You’ve seen it already? I thought they’re still considering whether to put it up”

“Seems like your raw talent was an exception so they decided to showcase it on an earlier date. Not to mention that I was looking good in the portrait” Jaejoong said with a smirk.

Nadine rolled her eyes and Jaejoong laughed. “I was only kidding” he said. “So are you going to accept my invitation or what?”

“What’s the occasion?” Nadine wanted to know. Jaejoong shrugged. “Must there be a reason for that? Can’t a guy ask a beautiful lady out for dinner?”

Nadine blushed. “Flattery won’t get you anywhere” she pointed out. “So you’re rejecting me?” Jaejoong asked, looking defeated his eyes wide. He pretended to look hurt and Nadine shook her head at his silliness.

“Come have dinner with me then” Jaejoong persuaded her, standing closer to her, so close that she can smell his intoxicating cologne. Nadine gulped. “I..I have work— But Jaejoong shut her up by taking her hand and kissing it. “Please?” he begged his eyes boring into hers.
All of a sudden, there was a sudden shortage of air and Nadine had hard time breathing and her mind was clouded with Jaejoong’s infatuated look. The fair skin, those glazed eyes…and those lips…

“O..Ok..I’ll go. Just wait here. I’ll go get my bag” Nadine blurted out. She tried hard not to imagine what the guy will do if she said No again. Jaejoong’s lips curled into a victorious smile and his expression brightened up. “Good. I’ll wait” he said, releasing her hand.

Nadine rushed back to the teachers’ room, her hand still burning from Jaejoong’s touch. She was so lost in her thought that she did not realize Leeteuk lurking behind her. “Somebody’s got a date!” Leeteuk sang, following her as she went to her desk.

“It’s not a date!” Nadine hissed, packing her stuff. Leeteuk snorted. “You guys look like a modern Romeo and Juliet from the way I see it” he commented with a cheeky grin.

“Shut your trap Leeteuk” Nadine told him before leaving the room. “Ooooh..somebody’s getting all hot and bothered already!! Don’t go home too late okay” Leeteuk called out to her.

Nadine slammed the door shut at the same time Leeteuk let out one of his infamous laugh. Nadine tried hard not to show her nervousness as Jaejoong opened the door for her and she slipped into the luxurious car. As Jaejoong drove the car out of the lot, she asked him where he will take her.

“You look like someone who will enjoy seafood. I already booked a place for us” Jaejoong told her, stopping at a red light.

“You’ve already book?” Nadine questioned him. “Won’t that be a waste if I had rejected you?” she pointed out.

“But you didn’t” Jaejoong said, throwing her a magnanimous smile. Nadine leaned back on her seat before she got dizzy again. She calmed herself down by staring at the evening scenery outside and she felt Jaejoong’s eyes on her time and again.

“Keep your eyes on the road mister” Nadine told him. “I can’t” Jaejoong answered immediately causing Nadine to turn to him with surprised.

Jaejoong gave her a sheepish grin as he faced the road and hummed to the music playing on the radio. Nadine had a hard time swallowing as she focused her attention to the traffic outside instead. As they drove past the street leading to the NAC, Nadine suddenly thought of Changmin. He was still busy with SY’s fashion show and did not have the time to meet up with her when she went to his workplace for the sculptor talk. She admits that she was a bit disappointed not being to see him but he was busy with work and so was she. By the time the sculptor talk had ended, Junsu told her that Changmin had already left the building and had apologized for not attending to her.

“Wonder what’s he doing now….” Nadine thought.
