“You shouldn’t be drinking now. The show haven’t even started” Changmin told the older guy as his eyes scanned the people stepping out of their cars in glamorous outfits and making their way to where SY’s fashion show will be held.
“And you should be inside” Mr Jung said. “Where your fair lady awaits” he added in a stage whisper.
Changmin turned to him with a dubious look. “W..What are you saying? I’m..I’m here checking to see if traffic is smooth and that the valet is doing their job” he fibbed.
Mr Jung rolled his eyes. “Just get inside before the lady runs away. I think she’s looking for you” he said, ushering Changmin. “Checking the traffic, my foot!”
Changmin admits that when the President told him that Nadine was already in the building, he was all up and ready to run and meet her. But it was the thought of Jaejoong that slows him down. As Changmin breezed past the people making their way to event, he paused a while to take in the surrounding. The featured space was transformed into some kind of a spring garden theme with splashes of colors here and there. Most of the crowd had already settled in their seats near the runway area, and checking the free items they got in the goodies bags. He looked around for Nadine and stood his ground when he saw her standing in the middle of the room, dressed in a simple V-neck knee-length bodice black dress with a silk sash around her waist. The beautifully fitted and figure flattering outfit was effortless..yet alluring at the same time.
His legs finally started to move by itself and Changmin found himself walking towards her. It was as if he’s looking at a different side of her. Her normally straight hair was transformed into sexy, tousled waves together with a slightly heavier make-up especially the smoky eyes. It was also his first time seeing Nadine in a dress, one that shows off her legs. Whenever he meets up wit her, she was always in long pants.
“Can I help you ma’am?” Changmin asked her. Nadine spun around and laughed. “Hey! I was looking all over for you!” she said, giving him a wide smile. “Nice job with the place!” she added.
“Thanks” Changmin told her with a sheepish grin. “Your hard work really paid off” Nadine told him, clutching on to her beaded purse.
“You..You look great” Changmin commented her. Nadine raised her eyebrows. “Thanks..you too” she told him, commenting on his grey-silver Jean Yves suit.
“SY picked it out herself. Well, she basically picked out everyone’s outfit right down to the waiters” Changmin explained. “But you..look amazing”
Nadine giggled. “That’s the second time you said that” she pointed out. Changmin blushed and was glad that lighting was not bright or else Nadine would see it.
“So uh..you’re alone? I thought you’re coming with…a friend” Changmin asked, hoping that Nadine actually came down all by herself.
“Jaejoong’s at the Mens. He should be here soon” Nadine replied. Changmin nodded. “So he finally got the invites huh?” he muttered.
“Yeah, he did. One of his friends could not make it so he passed it to Jaejoong. Lucky huh?” Nadine asked. “Oh! There he is!”
Changmin was reluctant to see the guy’s face again but in order not to stick out like a sore thumb, he gave a wide smile to Jaejoong.
“Changmin! Hey!” Jaejoong said, clapping his back. “I heard about the hype on those free iPod in the goodie bag all the way from outside. SY’s really generous huh?”
Changmin shrugged. “Well, it is her night anyways. Anyways, I have to check things backstage. Have a great time at the show later!” he said.
“Hey, we should grab a drink later” Nadine suggested before Changmin walked away. Changmin nodded. “Sure, why not. I’ll see you after the show”
Changmin rushed backstage and almost bumped onto Junsu. “Hey. Watch where you’re going” Junsu said, dusting his outfit.
Changmin rolled his eyes. “Have you seen SY? She told me she’s planning to have a surprise at the end of the show but I need to do a final check up on it”
Junsu shrugged. “I haven’t seen her. You check the make-up room?” he asked. “What kind of surprise?”
“No idea. Call me when you see her” Changmin said before dashing off to do a final round of check-up. So far, everything was in place and Changmin instructed two guys to remove the plastic lining from the runway, to indicate that the show will be starting in a few minutes time. As they removed the material, the guests whispered excitedly to each other and Changmin spotted Nadine and Jaejoong at the front row, leaning closer to each other and discussing about something. There was a sudden pang of jealousy when Changmin saw Jaejoong placing his hand casually on Nadine’s thigh and telling her something. Nadine laughed and shook her head at what he was saying.
Changmin tore his gaze away from them and his eyes caught SY entering the back stage wearing chic color-block dress that reaches below her knee added with a stylish A-line silhouette that enhances her figure together with the 5-inch heel she was sporting. SY waltzed into the area, checking on the models and doing slight adjustments on the clothes, make-up and hair pieces.
“Seung Yeon! I’ve been wanting to talk to you!” Changmin said, finally catching up with her. Changmin stepped aside to let a model in a long flowing gown to walk past and SY wiped her brow. “About what?” she asked, looking around at the crowded mess. “Remove that thing! It’s hideous!” SY shouted at someone from across the room before focusing her attention on Changmin.
“About the surprise you were saying” Changmin said. SY nodded. “Yeah I know. Don’t worry about it. I have it under control” she assured him.
“But..what is it about? I need to know if it’s going to affect the whole programme or not” Changmin pointed out.
“Changmin! It won’t be a surprise if I tell you what it is” SY said laughing out loud. “And I assure you, it WON’T spoil the night. Like what you said, it’s going to be a highlight” she added before looking at her watch. “I have to go. We have forty-five seconds before showtime!”
Changmin wanted to say something but the actress already made a dash for the exit and Changmin was left all alone at the corner. Just then the lights dimmed and the music started playing at a low beat. There was a commotion as the models were instructed to line up behind the stage and get the show started.
“DO ME PROUD!” Changmin heard SY shouting just as the first model strutted down the runway and the guests started cheering and the music getting louder. Soon, after the first three models got to the back stage there was a frantic movement of getting them to the next outfit and Changmin got out of the way before he was drowned in the hair spray and flowing materials.
Changmin slid up to where Junsu was standing together with Yunho at the left side of the room, where they got a clear view of the whole show. Changmin realized that from where he was standing, he could see Nadine straight ahead and his eyes were glued on her the whole time, watching her sitting on her seat and witnessing the fashion show. The look on her face was something a five-year-old kid would have when going to a zoo for a first time. A look of pure thrill and animation. Occasionally Jaejoong will lean to her, whispering something and Nadine will either nod or shake her head and then they both started laughing to themselves. After the last model left the runway, the crowd got on their feet and cheered loudly as SY stepped onto the runway with a huge smile plastered on her face. The clapping got louder when she was presented with a bouquet and confetti started raining down on her.
“Thank you so much everyone!” SY said when she was handed a microphone. She then thanking to whoever that had helped her out with the successful production and when Changmin’s name was mentioned, Junsu nudged him while Yunho gave him a cheeky grin. “Immatures” Changmin muttered under his breath.
“But, I would like to give a very special thanks to someone special and so close to my heart, who was been helping me out day and night and doesn’t get tired of my constant nagging and whining” SY said, causing the audience to laugh. “Give it up, for Korea’s upcoming youngest designer and my favorite cousin, Han Soo-Min!”
The crowd clapped as Han Soo-Min, a petite girl wearing a sleeveless orange-peach knee-length dress with a waist patented black belt, walked nervously to SY, bowing and smiling to everyone. “Oooh..so that’s the surprise” Junsu was saying as he clapped along. Changmin nodded. “She’s so young” he commented.
“I heard she’s one of the top students in a fashion school in the US” Yunho told them. “You knew about this?” Changmin asked him.
Yunho shrugged. “Of course. I’m the VP” he said smugly. Both Changmin and Junsu made a face at him and turned their attention to the show. The paparazzi were all up and about snapping photos of the young designer on the stage with the actress while some of the guests were still seated while other moved about to get some refreshments.
The lights were slightly dimmed but the music was still playing. Changmin moved through the crowd and occasionally stopped to talk to people who congratulate him on the successful event. He was actually looking for Nadine when SY called him.
“Changmin! Changmin!” SY called out, pulling Soo-Min behind her. “Meet the surprise!” she said triumphantly. Soo-Min bowed politely to Changmin. “Nice to meet you” Changmin said, shaking her hand.
“She is THE mastermind behind my creations and I just HAD to feature her for tonight’s show” SY told him. Changmin nodded. “Wow. You’ve got yourself a handful of talents. Cool” he told Soo-Min.
Soo-Min gave him a shy smile. “Thanks” she said softly. “Unnie. I’m going to get something to drink”
“Okays! Why don’t you go with Changmin instead? I have to do an interview for a while” SY suggested before rushing off to the paparazzi.
Changmin and Soo-Min exchanged glances with each other. “I can go get it myself” Soo-Min insisted. “No, it’s fine with me. Let’s go” Changmin told her. They walked together to the refreshment area and Soo-Min complimented on the event.
“It’s the cooperation between the client and the company actually” Changmin told her. “That’s why we can pull it off easily” he added, hesitating to give her a glass of red wine.
Soo-Min gracefully accepted the drink and smiled. “I can handle my liquor pretty well” she told him.
“I heard you studied in the US” Changmin said. Soo-Min nodded. “I was actually there ever since I was eight years old. I only come back for Christmas but SY told me to come down for this event as well”
“So you’ll be breaking into Korea’s fashion industry as well?”
Soo-Min shrugged. “Maybe. I haven’t actually thought about it” she said giving him a wistful smile.
Changmin nodded. His eyes were roaming around the area when he spotted Nadine and Jaejoong stepping onto the outdoor terrace. “Hey uh..I need to attend something for a while—
“It’s okay. You go ahead with it” Soo-Min told him.
Changmin gave her a grateful smile before making his way to the terrace but he stopped in his tracks. Judging from the silhouette of the two, it seemed like they were closer than close. They were standing in the middle of the terrace and holding a glass of champagne each. Nadine was telling Jaejoong something and he burst out laughing.
Changmin was having second thoughts whether to join them or not. He took a step forward to the door when he saw Jaejoong snaked his arm around Nadine’s waist, pulling her closer and his face leaning forward.
Changmin hastily turned away before witnessing the kiss between Jaejoong and Nadine.
