“You shouldn’t have come if you’re not feeling well” Changmin told Junsu as they weaved through the crowd and heading to the refreshment area.
“What? And miss your big celebration for the success of SY’s fashion event?” Junsu pointed out pouring himself a cup of tea while Changmin’s eyes scanned the different delicacies presented on the table.
“It’s not MY party. It’s Ex-Pac. Personally, I feel this kind of celebratory party is a waste of time and money” Changmin said in a low voice as he picked out different types of finger foods and placed it on his plate.
“If it’s a waste, then why do you bother coming here and taking those food?” Junsu questioned him, sipping his tea.
“Because I love food? Plus, it’s free” Changmin said through a mouthful of éclair. Junsu grimaced and walked away. “I don’t understand you” he said.
“I don’t understand me either” Changmin told him as he followed Junsu around the crowded terrace. It was situated at the tenth floor of the Ex-Pac building and from where they were standing, they could see the NAC standing tall and proud far away on the hill but Changmin was more interested in the dark brown roof towards his left side, where Iseul High School was. Even though it was blocked by a few tall buildings, Changmin can faintly make out the school building and it just so happened that the windows of the Art Studio was facing where he was standing.
“Changmin! Junsu! There you guys are!” Yunho came walking towards them with a big grin on his face. The three guys high-five each other. “Have you guys read the paper?” Yunho asked, sitting beside Junsu.
“Which one? Almost all newspapers and magazine articles are covering about the hype” Junsu pointed out in a muffled voice after letting out another sneeze and covering his mouth another tissue paper.
“Those articles are covering the same thing. How SY is bringing back the colors in spring collection bla bla. I was referring to…” Yunho looked around and leaned forward. Changmin frowned and leaned forward as well, wondering why the VP was being secretive.
“I was referring to HOTSHOT” Yunho said in a whisper. Junsu raised his eyebrows. “But Hyung, that magazine’s well known for it’s untrue scandalous stories and you hated that magazine, let alone touching it!” he said.
“Yeah, why are you all excited for? Did you hook up with someone last night? And that your photos were all over that magazine?!” Changmin asked, tossing his empty plate on the table and crossing his arms in displeased.
Yunho burst out laughing seeing their furious faces. “What? NO! I was referring to you and Soo Min! I didn’t know you two were getting comfortable with each other already”
Junsu faced Changmin, his eyes wide open. “Chincha? How come I didn’t see that?”
Changmin shrugged. “I only talk to her once” he said and then glared at Yunho. “Are you sure this is not one of your dirty tricks?”
“No! I’m serious. Go see the magazine if you don’t believe me. They’ve got pretty good shots of you two together. I think SY’s up to something” Yunho told them leaning on the chair with a smirk.
Changmin rolled his eyes. “No. She’s not up to—
“Ah. I get it! No wonder she kept pushing Soo-Min to you the WHOLE night. I thought she was drunk” Junsu said, tapping his chin.
“Maybe she’s faking it so that she got a reason to get those two together” Yunho guessed. “I want to see those pictures!” Junsu said with a sniff. “Come on Changmin”
Changmin reluctantly followed Junsu just so he can get away from being bullied by Yunho, but his curiosity was killing him as well. They were waiting for the lift to come and when the doors slid opened, they were surprised to see Jaejoong inside. The latter himself was surprised to see them as well.
“Changmin! Hi” Jaejoong said as Changmin and Junsu stepped into the lift. Changmin nodded while Junsu faced the front, unsure on how to handle the awkward situation.
“I actually came here to see you” Jaejoong told Changmin. Changmin gave him a sideway glance. “How come?” he asked casually, even though in his mind, Jaejoong was the last person he wanted to see, especially on a beautiful Monday morning.
“To apologize. I was totally clueless about what happened last Friday and I went to see Nadine at school just now” Jaejoong said, looking down at his shoes.
Changmin felt a tug in his heart when he heard that Jaejoong was with Nadine. “And?” he prompted.
“Nadine told me…what happened. I..sound like a complete jerk. I’m really really sorry if I ruin your—
“No you didn’t. It was nothing. You..were..not yourself at that night” Changmin said slowly. “At least you didn’t hurt yourself. Or anyone” he muttered.
When the lift reached their floor, Changmin was more than relieved than to be breathing the same air with Jaejoong. Junsu excused himself and it was only Changmin and Jaejoong standing alone at the lift lobby.
“Actually, I kind of hurt…Nadine” Jaejoong said after Junsu was out of earshot. Changmin faced him when he heard that.
“I remembered clearly that I was grabbing her and forcing her or something..and I guess I sort of use force on her and there were slight bruises—
“Bruises?” Changmin questioned him. He did not mean to sound angry but he could not help hearing what Jaejoong was saying.
Jaejoong gulped seeing the furious look on Changmin’s face. “H..Hey. Listen okay. Nadine told me she’s fine and that she did not need a doctor to check on her wounds. She seems really fit just now..a..and..you can call her if you don’t believe me”
Changmin narrowed his eyes and told himself to calm down. “No..I was..It’s good to know that she’s feeling fine. Is there anything else you would like to say? Cause I have a lot of work to do”
Jaejoong nodded. “I understand. But here…Nadine told me to pass you this” he said handing Changmin a brown paper bag that he was carrying the whole time.
Changmin took the bag and looked inside at the content. He saw the grey material and immediately recognized that it was the blazer that he had loaned to Nadine on the night she got assaulted by Jaejoong.
“She told me she wanted to personally come down and hand this to you but I told her I’ll do it instead so that I can..you know..clear some stuff with you…” Jaejoong trailed off, looking uncomfortable. “I guess I look like a fool huh that night? I must be spouting jibberish. It’s a miracle I didn’t hit someone while driving—
Changmin waved his hand and Jaejoong kept his mouth shut. “I’m glad that you’re alive and well. That’s all” he said. “So uhh..thanks for taking the trouble to come all the way here” he added, holding out the bag.
Jaejoong nodded. “No problem” he said. He was about to walk off when he stopped and called out to Changmin. “Hey, you wouldn’t happen to know any good restaurants around here eh? Cause I’m running out of ideas where to take Nadine out to dinner tonight”
Changmin’s mind went blank for a while. Nadine had forgiven this guy so easily after he had physically hurt her? And now she’s going out with him..
“Changmin? Hello!” Jaejoong called out to him, waving his hand in front of his face. “Are you feeling okay? You’re kind of spacing out”
Changmin let out a nervous laughter. “No…uh..I was just thinking where you should take her. Maybe you can try Renzo? The one by the beach? I’m sure Nadine will like it”
Jaejoong grimaced. “Nah. We already went there and she did not like the atmosphere” he told Changmin. “But that’s okay. I’ll think of something else. Thanks anyway” he said before stepping into the lift.
When the lift door closed shut, Changmin let out a frustrated groan as he made his way to the office. It was obvious that Jaejoong was trying to rub it in with the whole “where-to-take-Nadine-out-tonight” topic.
“Sickening” Changmin muttered as he tossed the bag onto his desk. The blazer slipped out together with a white note and it fluttered to the ground. Changmin went over and picked it up and saw that Nadine had written something on it.
“Thanks for everything. You have no idea what a big help you have been. See you around – Nadine”
Changmin stared at the note for a long while and then his nose managed to pick up on something. It was a mixed fragrance of lilac, linden blossom and a touch of sandalwood and vanilla. He looked down at the card in his hand and sniffed it.
“Oohh..” Changmin managed to say. So the fragrance came from Nadine’s card. He took another whiff and a small smile appeared on his face as he walked to the window and stared outside. His eyes easily located the school building from a far once again and he grinned to himself.
Screw the scandalous pictures of him and that fashion designer. It seems like the perfume was already clouding his mind and Nadine Celeste Arena was all he could think about.
And screw the company’s policy as well. He’s going to get Nadine…before Jaejoong does.
