Junsu stepped into the coffee house, the bell at the door tinkling, announcing his arrival. Ga-In, the chirpy twenty-five year old waitress looked up from the morning paper she was reading.
“Morning!” Ga-In greeted him, folding the paper and putting it aside. “The usual for you?” she asked, as she proceeds to the coffee machine to prepare Junsu’s usual breakfast, which normally consist of two bagels and a cup of strong black coffee.
“And two cheese bagels, three cinnamon rolls and a caramel macchiato” Junsu told her, as he settled on a rattan chair in the middle of the square room. “I bet it’s for another fussy client” he added under his breath, as he deleted Changmin’s message.
Ga-In chuckled as she prepared his order. “Someone got on the wrong side of bed this morning” she commented.
Junsu stifled a yawn and stretched out on the seat. “Work’s been crazy, I hardly had enough sleep” he told her.
Just then, the bell tinkled indicating the presence of another customer. “Rinnie…hi!! Ga-In said. “The usual?”
“Definitely. It’s going to be a long day for me today. Oh, and two blueberry muffins as well” the customer told her.
“Where’s Nadine?” Ga-In asked. “She’s in the car” the customer replied.
Junsu tuned out the conversation between the two ladies. He leaned back on the chair and stared at the fan above him, spinning around slowly. If only he could stay at the coffee house for the whole day and get away from work. “Fat hope” he muttered as he closed his eyes for a while and inhale the smell of cinnamon and roast coffee beans floating around in the room.
Narsha’s Coffee House was his favorite hangout during his high school days with the rest of the boys. They were regular customers and the staff here knows them very well. He got to know of this place while he was on the way home from school after soccer practice. He still remembered the distinct smell of brownies when he walked past the shop on that day and his legs somehow lead him to the front steps of the coffee house. The place was a two-storey coffeehouse and Junsu was in awed as he stared at the sign hanging at the entrance. “FREE Brownies – Only for Today!” A woman inside the café saw him and knocked on the glass door, giving him a huge smile. Junsu then realized that his mouth was hanging opened the whole time and sheepishly gave her a shy grin.
“You want some?” the woman had asked, motioning for him to come in. “Come on, don’t be shy. My daughter just made a new batch, so you’re in luck”
Junsu then saw a familiar girl appearing from the kitchen, carrying a plate of fresh baked brownies. “Hey I know you! You’re that girl from Science Club!” he had blurted out.
“You know Ga-In?”the woman has asked him, leading him to the comfy seating area. Back then, it was hand-me-down cushions and sofa sets but nevertheless, it made the place look homey and toasty. Junsu then learned that Ga-In and her mother lived above the cafe and the place was named after her late grandmother. Now both mother and daughter had moved out of the cramped space and are currently living in an apartment not too far from their workplace, and they had extended the sitting area to the second floor.
Junsu must have fallen into a deep slumber when he felt someone tapping his shoulder. He lazily opened one eye and saw a girl looking down at him. He quickly sat up, his knee knocking the small coffee table in front of him. The small cylinder vase sitting on it started to wobble and the girl quickly reached out and steadied it before it smashed to the floor. “Sorry about that” Junsu mumbled, embarrassed.
“It’s fine. Your order is ready by the way” the girl told him as she walked to the counter. Junsu followed her, rubbing his eyes and mentally kicking himself.
“Junsu-shii, you look dead beat. How are you going to drive like that?” Ga-In asked, handing him two paper bags.
Junsu took out his wallet and paid for his purchase. “I’m used to it” he told her.
Ga-In rolled her eyes. “Suit yourself; just don’t fall asleep at work later. I kept calling you just now but you didn’t budge from that seat. I had to get Rinnie to wake you up” she said, handing him back his change.
“Rinnie?” Junsu asked, looking slightly puzzled.
Ga-In glanced around the empty café. “Oh. She left already? She was the one who woke you up. I saw what happened by the way. Real smooth” she told him with a laugh.
Junsu’s face turned a slight shade of pink. “W..Well, you shouldn’t put the table so close to the chair in the first place!” he stammered, grabbing the two bags. He hurriedly left the shop while Ga-In continued laughing at him. He didn’t notice the same girl rushing back to the coffee house at the same time and they bumped onto each other at the front steps.
“Whaa—Hey!” Junsu cried out, clutching the bags. If the breakfast was ruined, Changmin will slaughter him for sure.
“Watch it you blind doofus!” the girl snapped at him. She shoved him to the side and stomped into the shop, slamming the door in his face.
“Rude!” Junsu said to the door. He walked over to his car and opened the door. “Just my luck, first there’s a fussy client waiting in HQ, and now this” he grumbled as he got into the car. His phone started ringing and he saw Changmin’s name flashing on the screen.
“Hyung! Where have you been? Did you get the stuff? The meeting’s going to start in twenty minutes time. If you don’t get your butt here—
“I know I know. Yunho will kill me. I get it. I’m on my way!” he told Changmin, as he started the car.
“You better be! And make sure the macchiato is warm, and not too hot. You should know how dreadful it is when Miss. SY doesn’t get what she wants” Changmin whispered.
“SY?! Why didn’t you tell me it was going to be her in the first place?!” Junsu squeaked. “I did! I left a memo on your desk yesterday. Didn’t you get it?” Changmin said in a defensive voice.
“Changmin?” Junsu heard Yunho calling him at the back. He can sense the urgency in the leader’s voice so he quickly told Changmin that he will be there in ten minutes.
Junsu tossed his phone at the seat beside him and was about to drive out to the main street when he heard an ear-splitting scream followed by a loud thud. He immediately pressed on the brakes and craned his neck to see what was going on. He heard a car door slammed shut and a young lady with reddish-brown hair from across the street came marching towards his car. Junsu thought she was going to hurl at him for she had a frustrated look on her face, but she walked behind his car and Junsu heard a loud gasp coming from her.
“Oh my goodness! Rinnie! What happ—HELP!”
Rinnie? Isn’t that the girl Ga-In was talking about? The same girl who was rude to him at the front of the coffee house? Junsu was startled when someone knocked on his window. It was Ga-In, with a panic stricken face. Junsu hurriedly got out of the car while Ga-In was speaking in jumble up sentences.
“Hospital…quick..too much..blood!” Ga-In was saying as she dragged Junsu’s arm.
“Wait Ga-In..speak slowly. What happened..” Junsu stopped in mid-sentence and his blood ran icy cold when he saw the crumpled body lying on the ground in front of him.
