"I've reached" Changmin said in a flat tone. "Safe and sound". Yunho chuckled on the other line. "Look, once again, I am REALLY sorry for sending you to Japan. It was an urgent matter and--
"No Hyung..it's fine. Everything's been settled over there. It's...I'm a bit jetlag actually" Changmin fibbed. Well, it was partially true actually. He wasn't able to get any sleep ever since the last phone call he had with Nadine. She was sounding funny on the other line, it was as if she had wanted to end the conversation ASAP. Changmin had told her to stay on the line for a little while but she told him that she "busy with something". Not to mention that she was stammering and sounded a bit...upset. But with what?
"You don't have attend the dinner tonight you know. I understand if you're tired. You can stay at home and rest" Yunho had told him.
"Nah, I'm cool. I can still go for the dinner. I'll see you tonight araso?" Changmin told him. "Ok..cool" Yunho said before hanging up.
Changmin's reverie was interrupted when someone was knocking on the window. To his surprise, it was Mrs Jung, Yunho's mother. Changmin slid down the window and the woman gave him a heartwarming smile. "Aren't you planning to brood in here all evening?" she asked.
Changmin chuckled. "I..I was just..umm..resting" he said. Mrs Jung raised her eyebrows. "Get out of the car Changmin" she ordered him. Changmin reluctantly killed the engine and stepped out of the vehicle. He was slightly taken back when Mrs Jung let out a wolf whistle. "Don't you look dashing" she commented. Changmin glanced down at his black suit and laughed. "I look like this everyday...and you're amazing as always Mrs Jung" he said.
Mrs Jung laughed as she linked arm with Changmin and they walked together to the five-star hotel where the dinner will be held in one of their multi-purpose halls. "You never fail to flatter me everytime we meet. So tell now, what's new in your life?" she asked as they stepped into the hotel lobby.
Changmin shrugged. "Nothing's new. Just the same old..stuff" he said, and then he looked down at the ground.
"Old stuff eh? Hmmm...I still want to hear about it though" Mrs Jung told him. Changmin glanced at her with a puzzled look and Mrs Jung cracked up. "Aww come on. I haven't see you boys in a while..and Junsu's already got a girlfriend. And no one told me about it!" she said in a fake angry tone.
Changmin laughed. Mrs Jung was like a mother to all of them boys. "Junsu hyung is here already with Ri In?" he asked. Mrs Jung nodded. "So what about you? Do I get to see your partner as well?" she wanted to know, grinning from ear to ear. They climbed up the spiral staircase to the mezzanine floor and Changmin was contemplating whether to tell her about Nadine. Will she freak out if she finds out that he's dating the client? No one knows about it..yet. How will Yunho react when he sees the two of them together?
"Changmin? Chaaaangminnie...there you go again! Living in your own little world" Mrs Jung teased him as she smacked his back. Changmin threw her a sheepish grin as someone opened the giant double doors to the venue and the both of them were immediately thrown back with the commotion that was happening in the hall. It seemed that most of the guests had left their table (and food) to be at the dance floor where a live band was playing. They were crowding around the dance floor and clapping to the music and whooping and cheering at something..or someone. Mrs Jung shook her head while smiling to herself. "What? What's happening?" Changmin asked her as they walked to the crowd.
"I have a feeling my husband got's something to do with this" Mrs Jung replied. Since Changmin was tall enough, he can see the commotion just standing from the back and his eyes almost popped out when he saw Nadine doing a slow tango with Mr Jung. He spotted Junsu, Yunho and Ri In standing at one side, clapping and whistling at them. Changmin focused his attention to the dancing duo on the floor and his mouth went dry seeing Nadine moving in a seductive way, in her short dark brown halter dress and her sleek ponytail, as she and Mr Jung slid across the floor and Mr Jung spin her around a few times before tipping her backwards and helding her up close to him. Their dance steps got complicated after that since their feet was moving at a faster speed and then Mr Jung signalled for Yunho to come in. Yunho shook his head but Junsu shoved him and Mr Jung gently pushed Nadine to Yunho who was looking slightly unsure. Changmin then felt a pang of jealousy overcoming him as he witnessed Yunho taking Nadine in his arms. It was obvious that Yunho was not much of a tango dance but Nadine whispered something to him and he nodded. The new dance couple started moving slowly with Nadine leading the dance number and as the music's tempo got slightly upbeat, the crowd cheered watching Yunho got the hang of it and spin Nadine around before catching her in his arms and lifting her in the air, spin around two times (the crowd went wild) and then setting her on the ground slowly as they maintained eye contact and interlocked their fingers. The music ended and Nadine and Yunho bowed to the crowd. Changmin spotted Junsu whistling while Ri In clapped her hands along with the crowd with a huge smile on her face. Changmin watched as Yunho led Nadine to where Junsu and Ri In was standing but Nadine shook her head and pointed somewhere, perhaps indicating she want to go somewhere else. By now, the crowd had dispersed and Changmin was having a hard time locating Nadine. But it was an easy thing finding her since she was the only lady in the room with a striking auburn hair color. Changmin made his way towards her, making sure not to step on people's toes. Changmin realised that Nadine was making her way to the bar at the other side of the room. As Nadine pushed herself up on a stool, her hand slipped and Changmin caught her before she fell backwards onto the ground.
"Gwenchana?" Changmin asked her, his arms around her shoulder. Nadine stared up at him in surprise and then she broke into a grin. "Y..You're back?" she asked, sitting straight on the stool. "Aren't you supposed to be resting?"
"What? And let the VP dance with you the whole night?" Changmin blurted out and Nadine turned to him, looking surprised again. "W..What are you---" she stammered but Changmin laughed at her as he sat beside her.
"Just kidding. You look...different" Changmin said slowly. "Different? As in how?" Nadine asked him with curiousity. "I saw the way you...move just now" Changmin told her and a sudden blush appeared on Nadine's cheeks.
"I'm serious! I was not expecting that just now. And the President dancing as well? How did you manage to convince him?" Changmin wanted to know, as he signal for the bartender.
Nadine shrugged. "I didn't do anything. He was asking about how the Art programme is doing and then the band started playing this tune and he started to get all excited and asked whether if I want to dance with him" she explained. She then smiled to herself. "He's a pretty good dancer" she added.
"You're not bad yourself dear" Mrs Jung interrupted them. The both of them swiveled in the bar stool to face Mrs Jung and her husband. The President patted Changmin's back, beaming so brightly. "I thought I told Yunho to tell you to rest at home" he said.
"I..I'm not that tired. Plus, we have the day off tomorrow so it's not a big loss attending this dinner" Changmin told him. Mr Jung nodded. "As long as you don't faint, then that's fine with me. So my dear, shall we take another spin" he asked, tilting his head to the dance floor.
Mrs Jung laughed. "I have two left feet" she pointed out and Nadine giggled. "No one has two left feet Mrs Jung" she told her. "Just go with the flow. You'll get the hang of it"
"Easy for you youngsters to say" Mrs Jung told her. "Old, young, doesn't matter. Come..I'll show you the moves Nadine was showing me just now. I'll see you kids later. Party hard while the night is still young!" Mr Jung told them before whisking his wife to the dance floor.
Changmin chuckled at them. The bartender came and asked them for their order. To his surprise, Nadine ordered a rather heavy alcoholic drink and Changmin stopped the bartender. "Get her..cherry soda" Changmin quickly said. Nadine turned to him with a slight frown. "You still have to report to work tomorrow" he pointed out.
"I took the day off tomorrow. There's no Art class anyway" Nadine replied simply and Changmin noted the hard edge in her voice. It was the exact same one she had during their last phone call. It sounded like as if she's mad at something but doesn't wish to show it. It was if she's choking at something at the same time.
"Nadine, is everything okay?" Changmin asked softly. "Of course. Why?" Nadine asked. "You're lying" Changmin told her just as her drink came. Nadine took the tall glass and played with the straw. "I'm not lying" she said before taking a sip of the drink.
Changmin was about to ask her again when Yunho called him. "Look who's here as well!" he said as he walked together with Han Soo-Min. "I bumped into her at the cafe downstairs and ask her if she wants to join the dinner" Yunho said.
"Looks more like a prom night here..rather than a formal dinner" Soo-Min commented. "Hi Changmin!" she said with a bright smile. Her eyes then averted to Nadine and Changmin introduced Nadine to Soo-Min.
"Nice to meet you. You're the designer right?" Nadine asked as they shook hands. Soo Min nodded. "I'm still an amateur actually" she said modestly. Nadine nodded and then politely excused herself to the Ladies. Changmin watched as she walked away and he cannot help feeling that she was hiding something from him. Even her drink was not finish. Something was definitely up.
"Changmin just came back from Japan too. Didn't you see Soo Min there?" Yunho asked. Changmin shook his head slowly. "No..I didn't know you were there actually. Mianhe" he said apologetically.
Soo-Min waved off his comment. "No worries. Japan's a big place anyway" she told him. Someone then called Yunho and he left the two of them together at the bar. "So..uh.." Soo Min started and Changmin raised his eyebrows waiting for her to finish her sentence. "W..What have you been up to lately?" she asked casually.
"Nothing much. Just work, that's all. Must be leading an interesting life as a designer right?" Changmin asked her. Before Soo-Min could answer, Nadine came back to join them and Changmin immediately picked up the frustrated expression that was in her green eyes. Changmin realised what was happening when a man with a camera came to them and asked if Soo Min to Changmin to pose together. "The hottest couple in town eh?" the man said.
Changmin shook his head and pulled Nadine to his side. "You must have got it wrong sir. This is Nadine Arena. An aspiring Art teacher. My girlfriend" he announced. He felt Nadine's body tensed up beside him but he casually slipped his arm around her waist.
The man turned to Soo Min and then to Changmin and then to Nadine. "Group photo then?" he asked, trying to ease the awkwardness in the air. Changmin chuckled and Soo Min shrugged. "S..Sure, why not" she said. After their photo was taken, Changmin excused himself and dragged Nadine with him to the dance floor.
"You saw the magazine didn't you? HOT SHOT?" Changmin asked Nadine, as he circled both of his arm around her waist. Nadine hesitantly placed her hands onto his shoulder and raised her eyebrows at him. "What magazine?" she asked, playing the innocent party.
Changmin sighed as he held her closer to him. "You don't want to admit it, but I will" he told her and Nadine gave him a confused look. "I don't like when you were dancing with Yunho just now. I don't like him having his arm around you while I just stood there watching you" he admitted.
"We were just...are you...?" Nadine stopped talking as they swayed to the soft music playing. Changmin nodded. "I understand how you feel when you saw those photos of me and Soo-Min in HOT SHOT. Can't belive you actually fall for it"
"I didn't FALL for it" Nadine insisted. "I didn't read the damn thing" she told him.
"Then stop...hurting my shoulders" Changmin told her. Somehow, Nadine had clenched her fist onto his shoulder without realising it. She immediately let go but Changmin held on to her. "You're not going anywhere until we have this settled" he said.
"Have what settled? I don't get your game" Nadine hissed. "And I don't get yours either" Changmin said, holding her gaze. "I don't have anything up my sleeve Changmin" she told him.
Changmin shook his head while grinning at her. "You're enjoying this aren't you" Nadine asked. Changmin shrugged. "You have no idea...seeing you fume like this. Getting envious of the photos. You know that's not true right? They are only doing it to boost up Soo Min's status" he said.
"But it seems like she's enjoying the publicity stunt" Nadine blurted out and Changmin chuckled. Nadine bit her bottom lip, regretting about the slip up.
Changmin reached out to tuck her fringe that had fallen over her face. "Nadine..is this why you're upset about?" he asked her softly. Nadine sighed and shrugged. "I..suppose" she mumbled.
Changmin chuckled. "To make you feel better, I didn't see her at Japan AT ALL. I didn't even know she was there in the first place" he said and Nadine shrugged again with a doubtful look. Changmin laughed at her childish behaviour and leaned his forehead on hers. Nadine looked up at him, looking uncertain. "Changmin...I have no clue what's happening" she whispered.
"Me neither" Changmin told her. "What have you done to me Miss Arena" he asked. Nadine licked her lips nervously. "I..I don't know" she said. Changmin bend his head lower and started kissing her. When their lips met, it's like as if they were the only one on the dance floor with the soft ballad music playing in the background. It was the same feeling Changmin had experienced back at his "oasis". It was as if he's being drugged as their kiss deepened and with Nadine's hands on his neck and their body crushed together.
"C..Changmin.." Nadine breathed in between their kisses. "We...s..should..mmmf" Nadine stopped talking just as it became intense and with Changmin's hands running up and down her back slowly.
They were then interrupted with a loud gasp from behind and Nadine was the first one to pull away. They both turned around slowly...and saw Junsu and Ri In gaping at them.
