But not for Soo-Min. Her job let her do whatever she wants. Be it an hour long coffee break to hitting the gym as and when you feel like it. Then there’s the part where you have the power to boss everyone and pretend to throw tantrums just so you’ll get to see who’s the one sucking up to you with their different methods. Soo-Min finds it amusing to see some people in her team saying honeyed words or doing abortive work just to remove that pout on her face. But throwing tantrums wasn’t Soo-Min’s forte but she like doing once in a while, just for the fun of it.
She however, gets annoyed easily. It usually happens when stuff that she asks for were not where they’re supposed to be. Like right now, one of her staff was supposed to be updating her on the arrival of the materials needed for her upcoming fashion show. It was only twenty minutes after their last phone conversation, but the delay was making her agitated as usual. And when she’s agitated she can be pretty grumpy and will snap at anyone in the way. Only her family and close relatives knows about her bad side which is why Soo-Min makes it a point to be patient with everything that comes her way, be it good or ugly. Perhaps she was brought up in a high society environment that she was already used to having things appear at the snap of her finger; that when it comes to controlling your unattractive emotions, it can be tedious for her.
Patience was never in her blood (or so she assumed), therefore when it comes to controlling the volcanic eruption of her mean streak, Soo-Min turns to her sketchbook and poured out everything. Sometimes the design that she blindly draw makes sense and would be added to her collection while other times it looks like a messed-up puzzle but she wasn’t bothered by it. Just as long her mind was focus on doing something rather than victimizing people or objects.
Soo-Min was engrossed with her work, her head bent low, almost touching the table as her right hand ran the pencil across the a3 page, adding a few finishing touches here and there, while her left fingers was tapping in tune to the music she was listening to from her mp3. She was unaware of Jaejoong standing right behind her. He was peering over her shoulder trying to take a peek of her latest creation. Soo-Min reached out to grab a red marker when her nose caught a whiff of alcohol and her head snapped up, her nose almost colliding with Jaejoong’s. “What in the---What are you doing?!” she asked, removing the headphones.
Jaejoong swiftly moved away from her, his hand behind his back. He strode to a nearby lounge chair and made himself comfortable. “I would lose that hideous belt if I were you. Doesn’t go with the whole outfit” he said, placing his arms behind his head and stretching out his legs.
Soo-Min looked back at her sketch and frowned. She had drawn the belt there just so the outfit will come together. She was aiming for the Bohemian look and the belt looks absolute fine. Perhaps Jaejoong need to get his eyes check. And speaking of eyes, she dislikes the way he was watching her. Even though she was already used to it, it still give her the jeepers. Soo Min purposely held out her sketchbook in front of her, blocking Jaejoong and focusing on her new design but it was as if that guy has inherited laser eyes from Cyclops that it was useless trying to ignore him. He could practically burn a hole in her sketchbook with that intense smoldering stare.
Soo Min sighed and placed the sketchbook flat on the table. “Can you just stop doing that for a second?” she told him, throwing him a withering glance.
“Araso” Jaejoong said. He averted his gaze somewhere else and then turned back to Soo Min who frowned in disapproval. “What? You only said for a second” he pointed out.
“Unbelievable” Soo Min muttered under her breath as she cleared the clutter on the table and placed them neatly in her bag.
“Leaving already? I thought you wanted to stay here for a while. Witness tonight’s special occasion?” Jaejoong asked.
“I don’t even know the birthday girl, so why should I be here anywhere. Besides, I have tons of stuff to do. Unlike you” Soo Min said, checking her phone for any messages.
“Tons of stuff? Like what? Stalking Changmin?” Jaejoong sneered. Soo Min threw him a disgusted look. “I’m not that low. I’m not like you” she said firmly as she stood up.
Jaejoong let out a short laugh. “I wasn’t stalking those lovebirds. I was only…watching out for Nadine” he concluded, looking up at the sky and squinting his eyes at the sun. He then turned to Soo Min who was pacing at the edge of the pool, her arms crossed and looking slightly displeased.
“Watching out for Nadine? Wae? Is…Changmin going to hurt her?” Soo Min asked, her back facing him.
Jaejoong took a deep breath before answering. “No…it’s more like the other way round. She’s not what you think she is you know. She’s capable of doing stuff that you’ll never imagine” he told her.
Soo Min spun around and faced Jaejoong. “W…What are you talking about?” she stammered. Why did Jaejoong make it sound like she’s a bad person?
“She knows how to manipulate people. That’s all I can say” Jaejoong replied. “It’s her…. specialty” he added. He signaled at the waiter standing at the end of the pool and the latter nodded. Soo Min watched as the waiter walked to the bar situated a few feet away and she let out a loud sigh. “Your liver’s going to die anytime if you keep drinking” she reprimanded him.
Jaejoong shrugged. “Who cares?” he scoffed. “But you know what, I am a much better liar compared to her. She actually bought that whole ‘I-have-a-drinking-problem-peer-pressure’ story. You should have seen the look on her face. Pretending to be all sympathetic bla bla”
“I still don’t get why you’re having this love-hate relationship with Nadine. Just what are you planning to do anyway?” Soo Min asked.
The waiter appeared beside Jaejoong holding out a cold bottle of wine and two glasses. He proceeded to fill the empty glasses but Jaejoong stopped him and told him to get back to his work. Soo-Min watched patiently as Jaejoong poured the cold drink into the glasses, stood up and walked towards her. She reluctantly took the glass offered to her and stared at the white wine swirling inside. Jaejoong stood a few feet away, one hand in his pocket while sipping blissfully at the alcoholic drink.
“I thought we’ve already make it clear not to ask me those questions anymore. You get Changmin, and I’ll have my way with Nadine. End of story” Jaejoong told her.
Soo Min felt her body going numb hearing the icy tone in his voice and she regretted being nosy again. It was not the first time she had asked this question. Perhaps it was getting on Jaejoong’s nerve that she’s been asking him time and again about it. She hastily took a huge gulp of the white wine and immediately felt better when she felt the drink running through her tense nerves. She wasn’t much of a drinker unlike Jaejoong, but she sometimes turned to her favorite beverage just to ease the tension away.
“By the way, I already set a date for that fashion show of yours. Make sure your mark that down” Jaejoong said all of a sudden after draining his wine.
Soo Min gaped at him. “Wae? It’s MY fashion show and I can choose whatever—
“I’m not finish woman” Jaejoong cut her off and Soo Min clamped her mouth shut, rather displeased with his rotten attitude. “The day you jumpstart your summer collection here will be the day Nadine will set off to Japan to attend some art convention with her class. By then, you can have Changmin to yourself”
“How do you know Nadine will be in Japan on that day?” Soo Min questioned him.
“You’re a nosy parker aren’t you?” Jaejoong asked her with an irritated look. Soo Min stuck out her chin. “So what? I don’t like the way you play your games Jaejoong—
“But you have to admit it’s a brilliant idea. When the cat’s away, the mouse comes out to play. Nadine will be in Japan for three days, so do whatever you can in that period of time—
“You plan Nadine’s Japan trip?” Soo-Min questioned him again, narrowing her eyes. Jaejoong simply shrugged and held out his empty glass to the sunlight. “Are you in for this or what?” he asked her instead.
Soo Min didn’t know what to say. Jaejoong had read her like a book the first night they had met. The day after, she had dropped by Red Maroon, the exquisite pub known for where the elite usually hangs out. The three storey building was well-known for their high-class and top-notch services not to mention having the best DJs in town to come play every week. Not only that, people like coming here because of the ambience. A travel magazine had called it having ‘a sultry lifestyle just by coming to Red Maroon’. When Soo Min had dropped in during the evening, the place was crowded and everyone seemed to be on high. The dance floor on the first storey had couples dancing and grinding against each other, they might as well get a room and get on with it. Soo Min was impressed with the arrays of drinks presented at the bar, especially their famous ‘killer’ margaritas. But she was there to return Jaejoong’s blazer but her night ended quite late after that when Jaejoong treated her to a couple of drinks and they retreated to the rooftop terrace where there was a pool party going on. Jaejoong had pulled her into a quiet corner where they stared out at the bustling nightlife of Seoul city.
It was there that Soo Min was immensely attracted to Jaejoong’s idea of snatching Changmin away from Nadine. Perhaps she was too drunk that night that she felt her immorality taking over her that she had agreed on the spot to the scheme. Soo Min had asked Jaejoong whether his girlfriend won’t be mad seeing him with another girl but he told her that he wasn’t attached at the moment but would like to be with someone.
“Oooh..having a major crush on someone now eh?” Soo Min had teased. She laughed gaily with a hiccup while Jaejoong gave her an annoyed look.
“I can’t be with her now. Someone already beat me to it. I was THIS close you know” Jaejoong had told her, leaning on the railing and closing his eyes while enjoying the cool night’s breeze.
“And you’re already (hiccup) giving up?” Soo Min asked. “Does she know…you like her?”
Jaejoong shrugged. “Maybe. We started out fine, but then I scared her with something I did. To conclude, I’m the bad guy and she’s off with her knight in shining armor”
Soo Min made a face. “What about you? You’re still holding a candle for that Changmin guy?” Jaejoong had asked causing her to look at him in surprise.
“N..No”
Jaejoong had looked at her a if she got two heads. “Please. You’re still pissed off that he’s already taken. But you do know that those two are only in the bud stages right? Haven’t yet fully blossom into a beautiful garden” he had said and Soo Min had wanted to laugh at his lousy metaphor.
And it was then that Soo Min found out that Jaejoong was having feelings for Changmin’s girlfriend as well. The alcohol must have gotten into them that night that they started brainstorming with whatever they have in their mind. Soo Min could not remember what they were talking about the next day but Jaejoong had called her and said he was one hundred percent sure the plan could work. Soo Min told him that he was still in his drunk stupor but there was stubbornness in his voice that was scaring her. That’s what Soo Min had felt and has been feeling ever since they became fast associates to break up the ‘hottest couple in town’. He can be deceitful one time, and then fun and easy going the next.
“Having second thoughts now?” Jaejoong’s voice interrupted, breaking Soo Min back into the present.
Little did she know, Jaejoong was already standing in front of her, his wine glass already filled up for the second round. Or maybe the third. Soo Min had no idea how long she’s been standing there thinking about what happened the last few weeks. She suddenly shivered when she Jaejoong ran his thumb along her chin and giving her a seductive grin. “Thinking of backing up now?” he asked in a husky voice.
Soo Min frowned slightly. She wanted to slap his hand away but she found herself immediately drawn to those dark eyes of his. Those eyes that looked as if they were staring straight into her soul and knows what she desires the most.
“You want…to let it go..just like that? I still remembered you mocking me for giving up on the chase to be with Nadine. You want me to do that to you as well?” Jaejoong asked, staring into Soo Min’s eyes. He could see how frightened she is at the moment but could also sense how badly she wants to put the plan to action. He admit, that he was deeply impressed with how she handle everything maturely, making sure that everything looks flawless and that no one suspects what they were doing. She was the one who was doing the brain storming most of the time while Jaejoong took care of the dirty work.
After all, it was his forte. Making people fall into his trap. Just like Nadine. He knew what an excellent impostor she was. That’s why they are suited to be with each other. They simply have so much in common.
Soo Min narrowed her eyes and stood her ground. “I’m not going to back up. We’ve work so hard for this” she said in a low voice and Jaejoong’s lips curled into an evil smirk.
His gaze didn’t left hers as his hand left her cute little chin and instead made it lower to the nape of her neck where he pulled her closer for a slow passionate kiss. He heard Soo Min gasped in shock and her whole body resisting the sudden kiss but when he nibbled her lower lip and coaxing her to let him enter, he knew he had won the game when Soo Min let out a low moan. Then her tongue was tangling hot with his and they suddenly broke apart when the sound of glass shattering interrupted them.
Soo Min pushed Jaejoong roughly and pressed her fingertips onto her swollen lips while Jaejoong took a swig of his wine, as if nothing had happened and eyed Soo Min who face was deep crimson red. “W..What the hell was that for?!” Soo Min sputtered standing a few feet away from him. Jaejoong stared at the pieces of glass on the floor and shook his head. Soo Min must have a shocking good feeling when he had given her the surprise kiss.
“That was a…gift. For being my partner in crime” Jaejoong said. “Something to uhh…seal the contract?” he added in a playful tone and he chuckled seeing Soo Min fumed as she stormed to get her bag and fumbled with putting on her cardigan. Jaejoong came forward, offering to help her but she held up a finger to him. “Stay the fuck away” she snapped before stalking off.
Jaejoong stared after her as she swung the glass door opened and slammed it with a loud bang before running down the stairs. He heard the waiter winced as he cleared the mess on the floor. “Don’t worry, she’ll be back” he told his staff with a wink.
They always do.
