Chapter 67

She's a Sweet Summer Part 1

Junsu happily signed his name on the piece of paper and took the keys from the receptionist with a flourish smile.

“Enjoy your stay here at Namdun Leisure Residence” the chirpy staff said and then moved on to attend to a group of tourists who had arrived and was creating a din at the lobby.

“Here we go people!” Junsu said dangling the keys and everyone started talking at once until Yunho had to climb up on a bench and let out a sharp whistle. It got everyone’s attention and Junsu saw Mrs Jung shaking her head in displease watching her son being bossy even though it was supposed to be a holiday for them.

“What? I need to get their attention. There’s got to be order here too” Yunho was saying as he got off the bench with a nonchalant face. Mrs Jung smacked his arm with the fan she was holding and Junsu and Changmin laughed to themselves seeing the Terminator being taken down by his own mother.

“Now that’s something you don’t see everyday huh?” Nadine said in a low voice. “I’ll pay to see that” Changmin joined in.

“Hey, where’s Ri In?” Junsu suddenly asked looking around the lobby. Nadine and Changmin turned around, searching for her as well.

“I thought she was with you?” Nadine asked him, craning her neck trying to spot her friend. “Maybe she dropped by one of the shops. You know how sneaky she can get sometimes”

“You go look for her Hyung, I’ll distribute the keys to everyone” Changmin said, taking the bundle of room keys from Junsu.

“Thanks. I’ll catch up with you guys later” Junsu said as he elbowed his way through the crowd. He whipped out his phone from his khaki shorts and punched in Ri In’s number but to no avail. He gave up calling her after the third time and started running down the brick path wondering where the hell she could be. It was very much like her to disappear without telling and playing a prank of him, but come on…they’re here on a holiday. Can’t she at least give him a break?

The President, was being generous this time, taking Ex-Pac to a luxurious beach resort way out of town. Junsu and Changmin had to ask Yunho to repeat several times when he announced that they will be heading to Namdun Leisure Residence, just to make sure he wasn’t fooling around.

“YAH! I’ll tell the President to cancel the trip if you guys make me repeat it one more time!” Yunho had scolded them.

Namdun Leisure Residence was a popular hit among the tourists because of it’s white sandy beaches, clear blue waters, stylish accommodations and offering its visitors a grand resort experience with its personal and retro-modern atmosphere. Ri In was finding it unbelievable that such a classy trip was going to be free for her and Nadine when Junsu broke the wonderful news to her.

“We’re going there for 5 days! That’s almost a week!” Ri In had told him, her eyes gleaming with excitement.

“And best of all, we can spend the rest of the days just…. the way we like it” Junsu said with a sly grin.

Ri In had pinched him hard on his arms causing it to bruise for days. “Don’t…even think about it” she had warned him. Actually what he meant was simply spending more time with each other, just the two of them hanging out at the stress-free environment and enjoying every minute of it. Ri In was once again trapped in being the wedding planner and they hardly communicate these days.

“Yaaaah…Ri In, where on earth are---“ Junsu stopped in mid-sentence when he finally saw her leaning against a shower shack…and looking slightly..green.

“Ri In! What happen to you?” Junsu cried out as he ran towards her. A funny sound escaped from her and she hurriedly covered her mouth and rushed back inside the shack, slamming the door behind her. Junsu knocked on the door, asking what was wrong and then he heard the retching sound she was making. Soon after that, there was the sound of water running and Junsu heard Ri In haggard breath from inside.

“Ri In…are you feeling ok?” Junsu asked. The water was turned off and there was silence. “I..don’t feel… good Oppa” Ri In said from inside with a shaky voice.

“Ri In, just come out now would you? I don’t want you to faint inside there” Junsu told her in a gentle voice.

The door swung opened and Junsu was shocked to see Ri In’s looking all pale and ghostly. Her hair was in mess and she was clutching her stomach for dear life. Junsu placed his arm around her and gently let her out of the small cubicle.

He brushed back the strands of hair sticking onto her clammy forehead and Ri In sniffed sadly. “I..I think I got sea sick…a bit” she croaked, looking up at him with a miserable expression. “Shouldn’t have eaten the tuna” she mumbled, leaning on his chest. “I’m sorry I disappeared without telling—

“Hey..Hey..it’s cool. What matters is you’re alright” Junsu assured her, hugging her close.

“But I’m not…alright! I’m an ugly mess! So much for a great start for the summer holiday” Ri In muttered, sniffing disapprovingly.

Junsu chuckled as they walked slowly back to the lobby. “I don’t care if you’re an ugly mess. I’m glad you’re safe and sound. You really scared me and the rest when we found out you were gone!”

Ri In slipped her arm around his waist and laughed softly. “Mianhe. I wanted to tell Nadine but by then I felt the food coming right back up so I had to do something about it. That’s when I saw those shower areas and got into one of them. I bet anyone who enters it will never forget the smell!” she joked.

“I thought I reminded you to eat something before we leave?”

Ri In nodded. “I did! But I guess I ate too fast or the tuna must have gone bad..or it could be the ferry ride” she said with a sheepish grin.

Junsu pinched her nose playfully. “You could have gotten food poisoning. How is the stomach now? Still queasy?” he asked, her eyes filled with concern.

Ri In grimaced as they entered the now deserted lobby. “It…still doesn’t feel right” she admitted. “Oppa, I’m sorry if the day didn’t start off—

Junsu shook his head. “Look, it doesn’t matter okay? Don’t go blaming yourself” he told her, rubbing her arms and staring into her doubtful eyes. “Will it make you feel better if I’ll be your personal doctor until you get all better?” he asked her with an appealing smile.

Ri In stared at him with a perplexed look. “Personal doctor?” she repeated, raising her eyebrows.

Junsu nodded. “Let’s just say…I know a thing or two to cure an upset stomach” he told her with a grin. Before Ri In could say no more, he instructed her to find a somewhere nice to sit, preferably near the beach. “The fresh air will do you good” he said.

“And…what about you?” Ri In asked, looking a bit frightened. Junsu kissed her forehead. “I’ll be back, don’t worry. I’m going to check on the rest” he said. “Now go..before the doctor gets mad!” he said in a fake stern voice.

Ri In made a face but she ended up following his instruction. Junsu smiled to himself as he took the lift to the seventh floor, where they were all staying. They were all staying at the Ocean Front Guests Room where it was considered first-class because of the floor to ceiling windows which offered them a spectacular view of the ocean and white beach. He was sharing the room together with Yunho and Changmin and when he entered their spacious room, he was greeted with a loud whooping sound and the distinct sound of Yunho crying out in frustration.

“They’re mine! ALL MINE!” Changmin cried out triumphantly as he pranced around the room with two bags of nachos in his hands. He stopped goofing around when he saw Junsu with a bewildered expression. “Hyung! Did you manage to find Ri In?” he asked.

“Yeah I did. The ferry ride turned her stomach upside down so I told her to take it easy” Junsu replied, walking around, trying to find which one was his room.

“Does she need a doctor?” Yunho asked, sounding concern. Junsu shook his head. “She’s okay now. Just need some rest” he assured Yunho. “What happen to your face?” he asked when he noticed the red crosses on his forehead.

“I was hoping you won’t notice that” Yunho said in a flat tone, walking to the washroom beside the kitchen.

“Let’s just say he suck at rock paper scissors” Changmin explained, still clutching his winnings. “You DO know that there’s an all-you-can-eat buffet this afternoon and it stretches all the way in the evening? That’s simply food haven for you and yet you’re fighting for nachos?” Junsu asked, entering his room when he saw his bags placed neatly at the bottom of the bed.

Changmin followed him but then they both stopped in their tracks when Yunho let out a loud cry. “I’m going to KILL you Changmin!” he hollered and Changmin disappeared so fast that Junsu barely had time to blink. Junsu rushed out of the room and laughed his head off when he saw the purple streaks on Yunho’s forehead.

“Must be those magic markers huh?” Junsu asked in between laughter. Yunho rubbed a damp towel furiously on his forehead while cursing under his breath when his mother stepped in. “I see you boys are…omo! Yunho, what’s that?!” she asked, pointing a finger at the streaks and looking stunned.

“Changmin…that guy..murder tonight!” Yunho snarled, stomping to his room. Mrs Jung sighed and shook her head. Junsu shrugged helplessly at her. “You boys never grow up do you?” she asked. Junsu grinned. “I doubt so” he replied with a grin.

Mrs Jung rolled her eyes. “I see you kids later at dinner tonight” she said before leaving the room.

Junsu went back to his room, unzipped one of the bags and took out his trusted medical kit. You can never be too sure when those nasty migraines or diarrhea attacks might come, even on holidays like these. “I’m going down to the beach” he shouted towards Yunho’s door before leaving. When he reached the lobby at the first floor, he made his way to the banquet room where the lunch buffet was going on.

Junsu spied the oranges and apples on the fruit bowl at the counter and went over to them. He picked up a few slices and grabbed two bottles of water on the way and was about to proceed down to the beach when he heard Nadine calling him.

“Have you found her?” Nadine asked running towards him with a worried expression. Junsu nodded and told her about Ri In being sea sick and having an upset stomach.

“Oh..well, she does look a bit green, but she kept insisting she was fine. How is she feeling now?” Nadine asked.

“A bit dizzy, but I assure you she’ll get plenty of rest today so her holiday won’t be ruin. You can go ahead and enjoy yourself. I’ll take care of her” Junsu told Nadine.

“Chincha? Maybe I should—

“No it’s fine, really! You guys deserve this break and she’s already feeling terrible enough for going off at a bad start. So I’m sure you don’t want her to feel extra guilty for making a big fuss over her” Junsu interrupted Nadine.

Nadine considered his suggestions. “Well…that’s true” she said with a sigh. “But I just wish there’s something I can do..oh wait!”

Junsu watched as Nadine rushed forward to a hotel staff that was carrying a stack of warm towels in her hands. She took one of the thick cloths from the staff and then passed it to Junsu. “Here. This could freshen her up a little bit. You sure you can handle this on your own?”
Junsu nodded and Nadine gave him a grateful smile. “She’s really lucky to have you” she complimented with a wink. “You’re going to be sorry if you let anything happen to her” she added in a serious tone but Junsu noted the glimmer of humor in her eyes.

It was an easy job trying to figure out where Ri In will be resting. There were comfy seating areas scattered all over the place which mainly consist of a wooden benches with comfy cushioned seats situated inside a sheltered make-shift hut. It gives off that village-like feeling, just simply sitting there, basking in the sunlight and the enjoying the cool breeze and hearing the sound of the waves crashing to shore. And it was exactly what his girlfriend was doing, sitting on the bench and leaning on the arm rest while her arms was massaging her ankles.

“What happened to your leg?” Junsu asked rushing over, upon seeing that it was slightly red.

“I sort of..stumbled somewhere and hit on something hard” Ri In explained. She stretched out her legs on the seat and grinned at Junsu. “Perhaps Doctor Kim can do something about it?”

Junsu laughed and handed Ri In the platter of fruits and the warm towel. “Eat those to fill in that empty stomach. My mom used to make me eat fruits after I threw up, preferably oranges. I have no idea why but it always makes me fill better after that” he told her. He sat crossed-leg on the bench and gently took Ri In’s feet and inspected the injury. When he pressed his fingers on the red spot, Ri In yelped and instantly kicked him.

“Omo! Mianhe!” Ri In cried out and laughing at the same time. “You shouldn’t have done that” she added, munching on a slice of apple and pressing the warm towel onto her forehead.

Junsu unzipped his medical kit and fished out the healing cream he usually used to ease this kind of pain. As he rubbed the cream and massaged Ri In’s ankles slowly, he was aware that Ri In had stopped eating and was staring at him. “Finish those or you have to piggyback me back to my room later” he said without looking up.

Ri In snorted. “Oppa, do you usually carry that bag around?” she questioned him, reaching out for one of the bottled waters.

“Well I usually carry it when me and the boys play tennis or soccer. But I usually make it a point to bring them on trips like this. It comes it handy…like right now” Junsu asked, stealing a glance at Ri In.

“So you’re saying I’m a burden?”

“Aniya! I’m saying you’re just…clumsy” Junsu concluded and Ri In narrowed her eyes at him. Junsu laughed as he continued massaging her feet while Ri In watched the scenery placed out in front of them. Junsu secretly eyed her, loving the way the gentle breeze was blowing her long wavy hair away, from her face and the way her head titled slightly with those dreamy eyes gazing out at the beach. Junsu patted Ri In’s feet causing her to come back to reality. “I’m done” Junsu declared and Ri In peered at her legs where to her surprise, the red marks were gone.

“WOW! Impressive! You know, I should be clumsy more often, so I can get free massages from you” Ri In joked, sitting upright and dangling her feet in front of her with a gleeful look. Junsu put aside his medical kit and shook his head. “Next treatment comes with a price” he told her. “Now feed me”

“Wae?”

“Because I’ve just touched your feet and you won’t want these fingers to be touching those!” Junsu reminded her, pointing to the fruits. Ri In chuckled. “I forgot about that..okay, here goes. Open wide!” Junsu opened his mouth, awaiting for the orange to enter his mouth when Ri In swiftly made a U-turn and ate the orange instead.

“Yah Ri In!” Junsu scolded her while she chewed on the fruit with delight. “Ok ok..!” Ri In gave in when Junsu reached out to poke her sides. The both of them leaned back on the bench, enjoying the quiet moment when a family of four ran down the beach and the two kids splashed in the water happily. The father joined them while the mother was happily snapping photos of them. Junsu heard Ri In let out a soft sigh and he turned to her. “What’s wrong?”

Ri In shook her head. “N..Nothing. You heard something?” she asked him. “Well….I thought I did. Or maybe I don’t” Junsu said with a casual smile. Ri In averted her gaze back to the happy family with a pensive smile. “I’m glad…we came here. It’s really nice” she said, her eyes on the not leaving the family. She then shifted her gaze and stared out somewhere.

Junsu kept quiet for a moment, observing the way the father helped one of his children to build a sandcastle while the mother was brushing sand off the other child’s legs. “Ri In…do you…do you miss them?” he asked quietly.

“Hmm?”

“Do you miss them?....Your….parents?” Junsu asked, meeting her eyes. His heart was hammering so hard against his ribcage waiting for Ri In’s answer. Her expression faltered slightly and he wished he didn’t pop that question. But to his relief, Ri In gave him a small polite smile.

“Yeah…sometimes” Ri In answered. She took a deep breath. “It makes me…a lot calmer when I think about them actually” she confessed, absently twisting the not-so-warm towel in her hands. Junsu shifted closer and put his arms around her. Ri In leaned onto his shoulder, tucking her legs under her.

“It’s been…many years, but I still feel that they’re close to me. You know sometimes I wish that I should be in the car with them—

“Ri In!” Junsu chided her and Ri In lifted her head. “You shouldn’t stay stuff like that! Your parents won’t be happy hearing that from their daughter”

Ri In kept quiet for a while. “Actually, I was just thinking of that period of time when I was being passed around among my relatives. I almost ended up in an orphanage you know but my grandparents stopped them before they can even fill out the application form. That's why...I thought that..maybe I should..be in the car and not trouble anyone”

Junsu shook his head and kissed her hair and Ri In snuggled closer to him. “You know the apartment I’m living now? It was a gift from my mother” Ri In continued. “For my twenty-first birthday. Grandma told me that my mother always wanted to have a house of her own. And since she didn’t have a chance to have an apartment of her own, she wanted her daughter to have it. She was always the independent one among the rest of her sisters. Didn’t quite like it when my Grandma wanted to match make with some stranger. My grandma said that my mother kind of lectured her about the whole match making process. She was against the idea saying that there will be somebody for someone. So she stood her ground, met my father while she was out window shopping, and they got together after that!” she said with a wide smile.

“They met by chance?” Junsu asked. “And your grandparents was ok with that?”

Ri In nodded. “Yeah. I didn’t exactly know what or how it happen but I remembered Grandma telling me that my mother got off at a rude start with my father. They were arguing on this antique lamp” she told me him with a laugh.

Junsu chuckled hearing about her parents’ love story. “Well then, I guess you got her independent streak from her huh? And also..that unpredictable temper I guess?”

“I don’t have a temper!” Ri In insisted, nudging his sides. “You…you just make me pissed off most of the time”

Junsu gasped and Ri In laughed. “What? It’s the truth” she told him.

"Yeah well...you make me pissed off sometimes. You’re always the prankster and I’m always the victim” Junsu said, looking down at her.

“You don’t like me bullying you?” Ri In questioned him with a doubtful look.

“Aniya. I like it actually, since I’m already used to it. Maybe your mother was a prankster as well”

Ri In smiled. “Sort of. Sometimes I see her teasing my father and he will usually make a nasty comeback as well. I’m glad she found the right guy…” she trailed off.

Junsu stroked Ri In’s fingers which had been toying with the towel in her lap. He then took it in his and they both stared at it. Ri In’s hand looked small and delicate in his large manly hand. He suddenly wondered how a glittering silver band will look like on her finger. “And I’m glad…I’m really glad I met you Ri In. I’m glad your parents brought you into this world and I…I..want to grow old with you…if you don’t mind” he said carefully.

Ri In slowly lifted her head and Junsu swallowed hard. Ri In’s eyes were searching his, thinking probably that there was a catch to it but Junsu simply leaned forward and pressed his lips onto hers. Their kisses this time was simply burning with pure tenderness and the air was bursting with a remarkable sense of enchantment . Junsu pulled Ri In by her waist, drawing her closer as he deepened their kiss.

“I love you so much Ri In” Junsu murmured in between their kisses. Ri In pulled away and met his gaze. Junsu tilted her chin and nodded. “I really—

But his word was cut off when Ri In suddenly hugged him tightly and he heard her sobbing quietly. “Silly girl…don’t cry” Junsu whispered, returning the hug.

“I…I can’t help it” Ri In said and sniffed. “You want to grow old with me…so you won’t mind me being a bully as well, no matter how old it gets?” she asked.

Junsu chuckled. “If your father can withstand your mother’s mischief, then I think I can handle it pretty well coming from you” he told her.

Ri In released him and gave him a teary smile. “You’re an absolute angel, you know that?” she asked, caressing his cheek lovingly.

Junsu took her hand and kissed it. “I’m not perfect…but I’m willing to make you happy for the rest of your life” he promised her.

As they walked back to the hotel, hand in hand, Junsu glanced at Ri In, who now looked much better. The colors had returned back to her face, her usual flushed cheeks and gleaming eyes, and when she caught him staring at her, those usual red dots appeared and Junsu laughed. Ri In blushed deeply and looked down while her hand gripped tighter on his. But when she looked up, she gave him a knowing smile and Junsu returned it back, while kissing her forehead. It was if they were sharing a private joke.

When Junsu returned to his room, he knew that this was one summer he will never forget. Who knows, maybe the next summer…there will be toddler joining them on their vacation…their first family vacation…

Junsu mentally slapped himself, thinking that it was a bit too early about having a family, but hey, who knows? It might just happen.
