Chapter 7

Good Day Part 1

Nadine flipped another page of the fashion magazine and stifled a yawn. She heard a little noise and glanced up, only to see Ri In mumbling in her sleep. Nadine placed the magazine back in her bag and walked over to the bed. The bed creaked as Ri In tossed and turned in her sleep. Nadine looked at her friend worriedly. Should she wake her up? The poor girl’s lips have turned pale and there were beads of sweat forming on her forehead.

“Ri In? Rinnie..” Nadine called out softly while hesitating to hold her friend’s hand. Last night when she did that, Ri In had grabbed her hand unconsciously until she could not feel the blood anymore. Apparently, Ri In had a bad dream and Nadine was afraid it‘s happening again. Nadine snatched the phone on the drawer beside the bed and called for the nurse.

Two nurses and a doctor rushed into Room 819 within seconds and ordered Nadine to wait outside. Nadine walked over to the sitting area along the corridor and sat down on the edge of one of the plastic chair. The smell of anesthetic was wafting around and she wrinkled her nose in disgust. She had always hated hospital. It reminded her too much of…everything in her past.

“Hi” a voice spoke up and saw herself staring at the man who had drove them to the hospital two days ago.

“He..Hello” Nadine croaked. She cleared her throat several times as the man sat beside her. “What are you doing here….” Nadine trailed off and then she suddenly realized she had forgotten his name. She gave him an apologetic look. “I’m sorry. What was your name again Mr…?”

“Junsu. Xiah Junsu, but you can call me Junsu. Everyone calls me Junsu” the man told her, giving her a perky smile.

Nadine nodded. “Okay..Junsu” she said. Junsu then gave out a dolphin-like laughter and Nadine resisted the urge to laugh out loud as well.

“What was that?” Nadine questioned him.

“What was what?” Junsu asked, looking around the corridor with a puzzled expression.

“Ermm..that high-pitched sound? That came from you” Nadine pointed out, looking amused.

Junsu chuckled. “That’s how I laugh. It’s unique isn’t it? Not many people can do that. No wait, I bet I’m the ONLY one who can do that” he told her with a twinkle in his eyes.

Nadine raised her eyebrows and shrugged. “Maybe..it’s my first time hearing something like that” she told him.

“What are you doing out here anyway?”Junsu suddenly asked.

Just then, the door to Room 819 swung opened the one of the nurses stepped out. She beckoned the both of them to go in. “What happened?” Junsu whispered to Nadine as he followed her from behind.

The doctor glanced up from the file he was holding and gave them a warm smile. Nadine then noticed that Ri In was awake but there was an oxygen mask placed over her mouth. Ri In gave Nadine a weak wave and Junsu chuckled.

“Is there anything serious with my friend sir?” Nadine asked him.

The doctor, who looked like he was in his mid-forties, but no grey hair yet, shook his head. He passed the file he was holding to the nurse and walked over to Ri In. “She’s fine. I think the vaccine is giving her the jeeper that’s all” he told them. “We’ll be giving her another jab later on and if her condition improves, she can be discharge tomorrow”

Junsu and Nadine thanked the doctor and nurse as they left the room. Nadine then heard Ri In giving out a loud sigh. “I’m sick of this place” she whined, removing the oxygen mask. She then caught sight of Junsu and quickly shut her mouth.

“Come on Ri In, just one more night here and then you’ll be going home tomorrow morning. It’s for your own good” Nadine advised her.

Ri In puffed out her cheeks. “I’ll rather hunt the idiot who placed that nail in the middle of the street” she mumbled. “And making me having this ugly bump on my forehead” she said, rubbing the sore spot.

Nadine shuddered at the thought of having that small sharp object going through her skin. She wasn’t sure who to blame; the piece of nail that showed up out of nowhere or Ri In, who should watch where she was going. When Nadine had rushed in front of the coffee house, Ri In was already unconscious, having hitting her head hard on the concrete ground. She then saw the two inch galvanized –finished nail sticking out from her friend’s left foot. Deep red crimson was already trickling down onto the cemented pavement and Nadine understood why Ri In passed out so quickly since the girl cannot set eyes on blood.

She was grateful to Junsu who was being vigilant and had rushed them to the hospital before any damage could occur to Ri In’s body. She had heard of stories of how fast the germs from the nail will attack the central nervous system and could lead to tetanus. Upon reaching the hospital, the doctor had the sharp object extracted and gave her friend a booster. Since the nail had penetrated quite deep into her skin, the doctor had told Nadine that Ri In needs to spend the night in the hospital for further check-up.

“Umm..why are you..here?” Ri In was asking Junsu in a small voice. Nadine then noticed Junsu who was lingering behind her. “Oh yeah..I was about to ask the same thing as well, but you got me distracted” she told him.

“To check on you, what else?” Junsu simple answered. He strode over to the other side of the room and pulled the curtain. The morning light streamed into the room and Ri In shielded her eyes from the glare.

“Oh….mianhe. Maybe I should---“ Junsu proceeded to withdraw the curtains but Ri In stopped him.

“No-no, it’s okay. I’m just getting used to the light that’s all” Ri In told him. She sat up straight on the bed and winced slightly.

“It still hurts?” Nadine asked, sitting at the edge of the bed.

“It’s my arm. The injection is a whole lot painful than the foot. I think it’s swollen and numb at the same time” Ri In told her. “How am I supposed to go to work on Monday?”

Nadine shook her head. “The doctor gave you two days sick leave. You will be up and running on Wednesday, but you still need to come back here for further check-up araso?”

“Two days?! I’ll be dead bored then” Ri In pointed out.

Junsu gave her a disbelief look. “I will give ANYTHING to get that two days break, and here you are complaining about it? Unbelievable” he commented, leaning against the window sill.

Nadine nodded in agreement. Her eyes then settled on the clock on the wall and she gasped loudly.

“What? What did you see?” Ri In asked, looking frantically behind her.

Nadine rushed to get her bag and coat on the couch in front of the bed. “I didn’t know time will fly so fast. I had to go off for a meeting—

“On a Saturday? Nadine…”Ri In leaned back on her pillow with a huff and averted her huge brown eyes to the man standing by the window.

Nadine put on her coat and looked at Junsu. “Umm..you..I really need to get to this meeting and—

“No worries. I’ll take care of her” Junsu assured her.

Nadine saw Ri In gave her a look of dismay but she could not bail out on this meeting. The future of her students depends on it; and the Headmistress won’t be pleased if she found out that Nadine was not present.

“Okay then..umm..I’ll see you when my work is done and Junsu, you don’t have to stay here the whole day” Nadine told him.

“It’s no trouble for me. I got the whole day free actually” Junsu insisted. “You better hurry or you’ll be late” he added, pointing to his watch.

Nadine was hesitant at first but Junsu seems like a nice guy and if tries to do anything funny to Ri In, the doctors and nurses will be around to thrash him out.

“Alright then. I leave Ri In to you” Nadine said. She bit her lip to keep herself from laughing when she saw Ri looking rather mad.

As Nadine waited for a cab outside the hospital, she thought about the two strangers in Room 819.

Who knows..maybe this Junsu guy can make Ri In forget about Park Yoochun…
