“Hmmm. ..” Changmin wondered as he made his way to the deserted lift lobby and stepped inside the lift to take him to the seventeenth floor. His Blackberry beeped and he checked the message.
“Where are you??!! Meeting starts in five minutes!!” Junsu’s message screamed at him.
Changmin’s snorted. “I am SO not falling for that” he muttered to himself. He knew Junsu was getting back at him for not informing about SY’s visit last week.
When the lift doors swished opened, Changmin turned to his right and entered the Ex-Pac’s main lobby where the receptionist is located. The woman behind the counter glanced up from the memo she was reading. “Everyone’s waiting for you at Seminar Theatre 4 sir” she told him.
“Mwoh?” he asked, his heart skipping a beat.
“Uhh..the President came back last night from Europe and—
“Shit!” Changmin cursed and hurriedly walked to his office. He tossed his briefcase on his chair and sprinted out of the room. As he did a little jog to the theatre, he made a mental note to punch Junsu in the gut later on. And maybe twist his arm a little bit.
When Changmin reached the door of the theatre, he prayed that the President has not started giving his speech or what have you. He smoothed down his suit and pushed opened the door. The door gave an eerie creak as it swung opened. Changmin saw that half of the theatre was filled and there was a murmur of excitement in the air. Yunho was standing on the stage, together with the President, deep in conversation. Yunho glanced up when he saw Changmin coming in and tilted his head to the sitting area. Changmin gulped and went to the front seats where Ex-Pac Art Directors were seated. Yunho doesn’t seem pleased with his late arrival though. Changmin saw Junsu sitting at the end of the row, pretending to be busy texting his phone. Changmin sat down beside a beefy guy and whipped out his phone. “You’re dead meat” he typed and hit Send. He leaned back on his seat and saw Junsu reading the message with a smirk on his face. A few seconds later, his phone beeped. “Now we’re even, so screw you!” Junsu replied with a wacky emoticon at the end.
Changmin gaped at the message. He was about to type back something nasty when he heard the President tapped the microphone twice, calling everyone’s attention. He slipped his phone back into his pocket and sat up straighter. He will deal with Junsu later.
“Good morning everyone” the President, Mr Jung Jin-Ho greeted them. “How are my kids doing so far?” he asked.
The theatre was filled with laughter and comments like “So far so good” and “We’re cool!” Yunho, who was walking to an empty seat at the next row shook his head and sat down beside his secretary.
The President chortled at their comical response. “Good..good to know. Now I understand some of you were given an opportunity to head to Japan with your project manager and Art directors, am I right? While I was in Europe, I have received feedback from the Japanese clients about how competent Ex-Pac staffs are and I can’t tell you..how proud I was when I read the emails and phone calls and faxes. Because to me, this is something astonishing” he told the crowd.
“Now I understand from my son, we had stop taking in new staff and that you people here, all three hundred of you, the newest batch we have, have been working doubly hard. Some of them were even spending the night in the office just to get everything done. Am I right Changmin?” the President suddenly asked, looking straight at him.
Changmin’s face turned slightly red when he saw everyone looking at him and he nodded. “Yes sir” he replied. He heard some of his team mates laughing amongst themselves at the back.
“Now people, there’s nothing to be embarrassed about and I would like to congratulate he and his team for doing an outstanding job for Seung Yeon’s upcoming….whatever stuff that she want to do. She’s forever getting on our nerves isn’t she?” Mr Jung joked, his eyes crinkling up when he laughed.
The 300 staff joined in his magnanimous laughter, some even clapping and whooping. “I’m not supposed to tell you guys this, but she texted me, at four in the morning while I was in Europe, God bless that woman..” More laughter erupted as the President scanned his Blackberry for the message. “Ahh..here it is. Hi Jin-Ho, I knew that choosing Ex-Pac was the right choice for me. Your company’s considered first class in the region and your staff never fails to impress me with their work. I’ll be looking forward to see the results of my new line next month. P.S: The Art Director was a fine young man, don’t tell anyone…oops..” the President hurriedly stuffed his Blackberry back into his pockets while the crowd goes wild.
Changmin heard Junsu’s loud laughter and he shook his head in embarrassment. “I apologize for that, BUT, the main point is, your good conduct really pays off, and that there might be a reward for you probably by the end of next month. Who knows?” the President continues as the crowd cheers. “Anyways, I’m not going to drag your morning with me lecturing you. You may go ahead and carry on with your work, and don’t forget about the buffet at lunch later on. See you all later!”
They applauded the President as he got off the stage and mingled around with the senior associates of Ex-Pac who had came down to attend the talk as well. Changmin overheard most of the staff discussing about the reward they are getting as they left the theatre but his mind was glued on Seung Yeon’s project and he can’t wait to get started on it pronto. True, the diva wasn’t easy to please, but he and his team had managed to impress and convinced her with their lively storyboards and brilliant ideas. When their meeting had ended, he and his team had celebrated their first round of victory over a few drinks.
“Changmin..dear me. Terribly sorry for picking on you just now” Mr Jung’s voice interrupting his train of thoughts.
“It’s..no problem sir…” Changmin stuttered as the old man patted his back. He noticed that the older guy looked slightly shag from his trip but he tried not to show it.
“No problem? Then you don’t mind me doing it another time then?” Mr Jung teased him and then roaring with laughter causing a few people to look at them. Changmin admitted that he was baffled by the man’s high-spirited manner that he wondered if the President was drinking a lot when he was in Europe.
“Ah..Junsu..my boy. I haven’t seen you for a long time. Come here, come here, I want to tell you boys something” Mr Jung said, beckoning Junsu to stand near him. Changmin noticed that Junsu was hesitating but he obeyed anyways.
“I think…” Mr Jung said, dropping his voice to a whisper “that your idea of sponsoring for schools that needed help is SUPERB!” he ended the sentence with a shout and Changmin saw Junsu wincing and rubbing his ears. “Okay, he’s definitely drunk” Changmin muttered.
“But sir, that idea just came out of the blue. We weren’t serious about it” Junsu pointed out.
“But I am! And so is Yunho” Mr Jung told them, jerking his thumb to the VP who was discussing a few matters with his secretary. He saw all three of them looking at him and he gave them a thumbs-up.
“Yunho did point out that it might take up a lot of energy and manpower, and since we’ve stop taking in new staff---
“Pffft..Changmin. Are you saying you’re not ready to taste the new challenge waiting for you? This is Ex-Pac we’re talking about. We’re ready for EVERYTHING. ” Mr Jung told him with an air of confidence. “Plus, you boys came out with the scheme. It will be your baby! Just think, maybe we can have a sister company after this!” he added.
Changmin and Junsu exchanged glances and the President chuckled. “Alright, alright. I understand that you boys are in shock, but bear in mind; I am not forcing you guys to take this challenge. All I’m saying is, I like it and I don’t mind giving it a try”
“We’ll think about it sir” Changmin told him.
The President nodded. “Good, good. Now, you two better run along and do what you have to do. I’ll see you during lunch”
When the President left the both of them alone, Junsu let out a sigh of relief. “Man, that was scary. I’ve never seen him that…happy before” he said with a shuddered. “So, what say you? About the plan?”
Changmin thought for a while. “I’m not sure. We need to sit and brainstorm if we want to make it work. This is huge news!”
Junsu nodded enthusiastically. “I know! I bet we can make this work out well. After all, this is Ex-Pac, we’re ready for EVERYTHING!!” he quoted the President.
Changmin grinned. “And you know another thing which you should be ready for?” he said slyly.
Junsu paused. “Err..no? Is there supposed to be?” he asked, looking puzzled.
Changmin cracked his knuckles and Junsu’s jaw dropped open. “Yah..Changmin! I SWEAR I texted you yesterday night about the President coming back. Maybe the message got lost somewhere or something. But hey, look at the bright side. The President praised you in front of.. OWWW!! STOP! Okok..sorry!” Junsu yelped when Changmin grabbed his right arm and twisted it.
“Yeah yeah..keep talking Hyung..keep talking” Changmin said in a dead tone, twisting the arm a bit more.
As the two guys stumbled out of the theatre, the President who happened to witness it shook his head.
“Boys will be boys” he mused.
