Fung (rubs his tummy): “I’m starving, let’s us go get something from the Buffet to eat.”
We both got two plates each and started filling up our plates. When we found our reserved spots at the special table, it seem as if there were only one chair left.
Guy 1 shouted: “They’re finally here! Let Fung sit on the floor since he came late!! Hahaha”
Guy 2 yelled: “Yeah, we should punish late arrivals.”
We both laughed as we both knew they were all teasing Fung. And Fung being a good sport went along with the charade. Of course, it was only for a few minutes before one of the restaurant staff told him there were available sits at other tables. I would have let him sit at the main table except Fung, being such a gentleman, insisted that I sat at the main table and he’d go sit at another table.
When dinner was finished, everyone gathered around the front of the room and the director requested for Fung to sing a song for us all to hear.
Girl 1: “Yeah, let’s hear theme song live!”
Fung (embarrassingly replied): “I’m so full, I don’t think I can sing!”
Guy 1: “Oh come on now, don’t ruin the spirit! Let’s hear the theme song. Most of us have not heard it also!”
Fung: “Let’s just all listen to the band play music instead, anyways I do not have the music sheet with me.”
The director comes up to the stage and holds up a stack of what seems to be music sheets.
Director : “I have it right here, Fung”
Guy 2: “Now you can’t refuse, Fung!”
Everyone laughed and Fung realized that he could not refuse any longer and went upstage to sing.
Fung: “OK everyone I’ve just eaten a full meal, but if you guys insist that I sing the theme song. I have one advice for those of you sitting in front. (looks down at front table where I was sitting). Beware...I might barf.” (winks)
As I sat there listening to him sing to the love balad theme song of our serie together, I felt myself being brought back to my character Lily, the scene where she sat and listened to a song Jake had dedicated for her as well, "Just Let Me Know" (by Ocean Blue).
When Fung finished the last line of the song, everyone stood up and clapped cheeringly. His voice was truly amazing, many a time I have suggested to him that he should release a CD but he mentioned that his singing career has been put off because his acting schedule has been very busy these last few years. He stepped off the stage, smile and thanked the band for the wonderful sound and then turned towards the director and gave him a wicked "I'll get you back" look. He then came to my table and sat down next to me.
Fung: "So what did you think of the song?"
I: "It's my first time getting to hear the theme song and I thought it's was very touching and you were wonderful!"
Fung: "No really, you don't need compliment me so much. I was so full up there I thought I was gonna barf."
I laughed: "No really, you were great!"
Fung: "Hehe...thanks."
Guy 1: "Hey Fung, great job man! So are you coming with us to the karaoke bar later on? We could use a voice like yours. Hint Hint!"
Fung (replied awkwardly): "Nah, I'm gonna take a rain check on that man. Thanks anyways."
Guy 1: "Oh man, why you got to be such a party pooper? Come on, it's our last night before returning to Hong Kong." (Turning to me) "Qian, you can come too if you're not busy."
I: "Hehe...thanks but I'm not much a singer myself, and besides I'm still full from the dinner."
Several other guys and girls from the crew came up to us and asked us to go too. But again, we both declined the offer.
Fung (jokingly said): "I've learn my lesson since my last trip to Singapore."
Everyone started laughing as we all knew about Fung's "big" tabloid news last time he was seen at a nightclub. It made such headlines that Fung had promised himself to avoid those unneccessary places from then on.
Guy 2: "Awww that's too bad man. All the other cast members are coming and we're missing our two shining stars."
Girl 1: "Hey the cab is here!"
Guy 3: "Well, we're off now. It's nice working with you Qian."
I: "Same here. Pleasure meeting you."
Fung (talking to Guy 3): "I think you better get going before they leave you."
Fung and I were on our way to the double exit doors of the restaurant when my cellphone rang.
I: "Wait, Let me answer my phone."
{on the phone}
I: "Hello Brother Kenny! What a pleasant surprise!"
Kenny (on the other line): "Hey Xiao Qian, are you done filming?"
I: "Yeah, we're finished. Actually we've just had our farewell dinner just now."
Kenny: "Did you fill yourself full again Xiao Qian?"
I(laughed): "Hahaha, of course! How did you know?"
Kenno: "Let's just say, your infamous love for food needs no further introduction."
Brother Kenny is such a hilarious person, he always had something funny to say.
I: "Hehehe...it's so nice to hear from you. What are you doing calling me now?"
Kenny: "I'm in Hunan right now. Are you anywhere near there?"
I: "I'm heading back to Hunan tomorrow morning, I'll see you there, how's that?"
Kenny: "Great! I'll see you then. We can catch up."
I: "Ok, bye bye."
{off the phone}
I turned around to find Fung still standing near me. He gave me a curious "Who are you talking to? And what are you laughing about?" look, which for some odd reason I felt obligated to explain.
I: "That was Kenny Ho. You know him right?"
Fung: "Yes I of know him. Heard he's a nice guy."
I: "Also a very funny man!"
Fung (sternly said): "I can see that. You still have a smirky smile on your face."
I: "Oh, hehehe..."
Our last night there together turned out to be pretty amazing. When we both got back to the hotel, neither of us were sleepy -- especially me, since I had a long nap that afternoon. We ended up hanging out together for the rest of the night talking about our hobbies and childhood stories.
And before we noticed, it was already the next morning.
Fung: "I think we have about 1 hour to catch some ZZZs, better head off then else we'll have 0 ZZZs."
As usual, the director met us at the airport to send us off to our destination. Me, back to Hunan and Fung, back to Hong Kong.
Fung: "Qian, you're coming down for the promotion this time right?"
I: "I'm not sure since I have not heard anything about it."
Fung: "Hm, that's weird. Maybe Chan hasn't set a date yet so he hasn't told you."
I: "Yeah, maybe. Anyways, have a great trip back home."
Fung: "You too. You still got my number right? Give me a ring when you're in Hong Kong."
I: "Yeah sure."
The flight back home was no more than an hour and half, yet it seemed almost like an eternity. Perhaps because as I sat there on the airplane, I kept reminiscing over my time spent with Fung in the last few months. Images of our little chit chat in between filming breaks kept popping into my head. And then last night was definitely one of the most memorable conversations we've had together. Although it was nothing serious of tone or nature, but I felt happy as we both talked with great ease. A little smile must have sneaked across my face as I realized several strangers were staring at me. There weird gaze brought me back to reality. "Wake up from your daydream Qian!", I told myself. "All we'll ever be is friend." And with that final notion, I stepped off the airplane to greet my family.
