Tell Him (Completed)

Chapter 5

The first difficulty I encountered on my first day in Hong Kong was the language barrier. Although Director Chan appointed a female assistance for help me thru my stay here, I certainly could not expect her to be by my side 24hours a day, 7 days a week. We went straight from the airport to the main central filming studio. For a minute I welcomed the familiar setting and filming studio surrounding. When I arrived at the meeting, there were many familiar faces in the room, but Fung was not there.

Director Chan got up from his seat as he welcomed me to Hong Kong: “Ah, Qian. You’ve finally arrived. Your flight was well, I hope?”

I greeted everyone in the room with a smile.

Director Chan: “Come and have a sit Qian.” Turning to the others, Directory Chan spoke in Cantonese introducing me to them. “We’ll start the meeting now since Fung just called me that he was still on location filming his new serie.”
So Fung was busy working on another serie already, I thought to myself. I wonder how much he will be able to participate in our promotion then. The meeting lasted over an hour and discussed the overall ideas for several events that were planned for promoting our serie. I was to appear in six separate shows which will be spread throughout the three weeks, two of which would be on radio shows.

For the next several days, I was kept busy with publicity photo shoot. Soon, a week has passed and still no sign of Fung, I was beginning to think that fate was not on my side. Our first interview together with Radio Show FM107.7 was scheduled to be this Friday, and still no sign of Fung anywhere. On Thursday night, after my assistance dropped me off at the hotel and as I was waiting for the lobby elevator to open, I spotted a stranger sitting in the far corner of the lobby room. He had on dark shades, a cap and heavy sports jacket. As I saw him beginning to talk towards me, I was beginning to be scare of this stranger. As soon as the elevator doors opened, I entered it quickly without a second glance back at the stranger. I quickly tried to get the keys out of my purse when my cell phone rang. I did not recognize this number as I thought to myself.

I: “Hello?”

All I could hear was static. It must be because I was still in the elevator. As soon as I reached my room, I checked my incoming call list again but it still showed up as Private Number.

I: “Hm, that’s strange. A Private Number again? It seems I have been missing this call throughout the entire day(not on purpose).” I gazed at the cell phone for several seconds before putting the thought aside and I decided to go take a shower to sooth my mind.

I was in the shower when I heard the phone ringing again. I hurriedly grabbed the nearest towel (which ended up being a bathrobe, luckily) and went out to pick up the phone.

Too late it had stopped ringing. Again I looked at the call list; it was also another Private Number call. I was beginning to be worried. Suddenly a loud knock on the door took me by surprise and I gave a loud shriek.

The stranger (repeatedly knock on the door): “Qian Qian, Are you alright?”

I was still not recovered from my shock and the pounding on the door was so loud I must have missed the stranger yelling my name.

The stranger (pounded on the door again, but this time asking louder): “Qian Qian, it’s Fung. Are you alright? Open the door!”

I quickly ran to the door as soon as I recognized the voice and opened the door. The first thing Fung did was pushed open the door widely and pushed me out into the hallway. He,himself, went back inside my room. Several seconds later he was backout in the hallway.

Fung (looked distress): “There’s no one there. Are you OK?”

On second sight of him, after recovering from my initial shock, I slowly recognized his outfit:

“Fung! Oh my gosh! It was you!! The stranger downstair! You gave me a fright!”

Fung (surprised): “Me? I’m hardly a frightening site.” (raises one eyebrow) “Am I?” (then looks at me from head to toe) “Come on, let’s go back into your room. Unless….you don’t mind people seeing Miss Li Qian looking like that in the hallway?”

Then I realized that I was still in my bath robe. My cheeks were beginning to turn red as I detected his smiling eye-gaze. This wasn’t exactly how I imagined we’d meet again. With embarrassment, I quickly went inside. I swear, I could still hear him chuckle as I went into the shower to wash off the rest of the soap in my hair.

Thirty minutes later, as we were dining at a nearby restaurant Fung was still laughing over the misassumptions I had made. Ends up all the private phone calls that I have been missing were from him. Apparently he had changed his number since he lost his cell phone during filming last month, thus the reason his new number was not in my phonebook. And the camouflage outfit as I called it, was his disguise to hide from the media.

Fung: “So how long will you stay here in Hong Kong?”
I: “Another two weeks, I’ll be going back the week of the 22nd.”
Fung: “Oh.” (pause) “So quick? Are you not staying here for the holiday?”
I: “No, I have to get back to celebrate the holiday and New Year with my family.”
Fung (smiles): “Well then, I have less than two weeks to show you the great city of Hong Kong, heh?”
I: “Will we have enough time? Aren’t you busy filming your new serie?”
Fung: “Hm, yah I am. But I can take several days off since it’s near holiday. I’m sure the director won’t mind. Besides, I have to reserve certain days for the serie promotion anyways. So the director knows this.”
I: “That reminds me to tell you, tomorrow is our interview with FM107.7 Did Director Chan tell you?”
Fung : “Is it tomorrow? I think my assistance forgot to put that on my schedule or I must be getting old.” (takes out his digital planner and jot down a few notes). “Listen, why don’t I pick you up and we’ll go together to the radio station, OK?”

I hesitated for a second before replying: “But Niki, my assistance, was going to drive me there tomorrow.”
Fung: “This assistance…is she there only for translation?”
I: “Yes, she’s been great help since I’ve been here. I wouldn’t know what to do without her.”
Fung: “Just call her and tell her you’ve got a ride already. I can translate too you know.” (laughs)
I giggled and replied sarcastically: “Hehehe, yes, Mr. Translator”. Then I will call her when I get back to hotel then.”
Fung: “Good, then it’s settled. Afterward, I will give you a tour of Hong Kong.”
I: “Hehehe”

It was getting late and he offered to drive me back to the hotel. When we arrived at the parking lot, I suggested that he doesn’t need to see me to the hotel lobby doors.

Fung: “Are you sure?”
I: “Yes, I’m sure. Look the lobby door is just right there. I’ll be fine.”
Fung (said teasingly): “You’re not gonna run away again and get scare like this morning are you?”
I: “Hehehehe..Stop making fun of me.”

Fung just sat their quietly, with a smile on his face looking at me. His staring gaze could melt any girl’s heart. If he doesn’t stop looking at me like that, I’m afraid I’d confess everything. And I’m not just about to say those words to him yet.

“Could you not stare at me like that?”
Fung: “Like what?” (chuckles) “You blush so easily Qian.” And before I could recover from my embarrassment for the 2nd time today he said, “You should go in and get some sleep. I’ll see you tomorrow.”
“OK. Good night, Fung.”

That night, as I lay on my bed I questioned myself. Qian what’s wrong with you? There were plenty of chances for you to tell him that you like him but you didn’t. Instead you acted like a teenage girl, blushing up every time he even looks at you. It’s pretty obvious that he is interested in you. So what’s the problem? Another part of me already knows the answer. It’s not him, it’s just me. I’m just too afraid of being rejected and hurt. And besides, why would a guy like Fung ever like me? Sure he treats me nicely, but it’s probably just his nature to be polite and a gentlemen.

Slowly drifting asleep, the last thing I remembered was Brother Kenny’s advice: “You’ll never know if you don’t tell him or give him a chance.”
