“Ahem.” Rainie cleared her throat.
“Oh sorry, Rains. Wu Chun, I’d like you to meet my best friend, Rainie. I’m sure you’ve heard of her.” Ariel made the introductions, hiding a grin when she saw Rainie slip into her man-killer mode. Wu Chun, ever the gentleman, smiled politely at her and said hi.
Rainie smiled sweetly and opened her mouth to say something but just then Chun’s phone rang.
“Oh sorry, I have to take this.” Looking apologetic, Chun moved away.
“Darn.” Rainie muttered. Then her eyes lit on someone at the bar.
“Ariel, you want a drink right?” She said.
“Not particularly.” Ariel replied.
“I’ll get you one anyway.” And she was gone.
“Okay guys, Ella just called and she says that she’s in the parking lot with Jiro. They should be here within 5 minutes. Get behind a sofa or something and I’ll turn off the lights.” Chun announced loudly.
Ariel looked around for Joe in the crowd but she couldn’t see him and Rainie had disappeared too.
“Ditchers. Abandoners.” She mumbled while walking behind a potted plant. Just as she got there, the lights went off.
“Damn.” Ariel muttered, blind all of a sudden. Suddenly someone’s elbow struck her side and she gasped in pain.
“Ow!! What the hell?” She shrieked.
“Shhh!” Someone said and she muttered, “sorry.”
Someone’s arm slipped around her from behind the potted plant and pulled into the corner. She struggled for a second but then she smelled the person’s cologne and it smelled wildly familiar.
“Joe?” She whispered.
The person didn’t reply. But Ariel assumed it was Joe, up to one of his usual pranks, so she relaxed, leaning back against him.
“Okay guys, get ready!” Calvin, the other member of the band that Jiro and Wu Chun belonged to, whispered.
The door opened and Jiro walked in, followed by the petite Ella.
“Why is it so dark in here, Ella? Did you bring me here to have your wicked way with me? Is that going to be my birthdat gift? Muahaha!” Jiro said.
Just then someone turned on the lights.
“Surprise!!!” Everyone yelled.
Jiro jumped back with a little scream.
Ariel blinked, immediately glancing back to see who had been holding her but that person was gone. He had utilized the time when she had jumped forward to shriek “surprise” to make his getaway. Ariel frowned, perturbed.
But she shrugged it away and made her way to Jiro who was trying to deny that he had screamed like a little girl.
“It was a manly scream.” Jiro said!
“Manly scream?” Ella laughed. “I didn’t know there was such a thing.”
“Whatever. It’s my birthday, you can’t tease me. Ariel!!” Jiro exclaimed, catching site of her.
“Happy Birthday, Jiro!” Ariel said, going on her toes to press a kiss on his cheek.
He smiled happily at her attention. “What did you get me?” He demanded.
Ariel grinned. Jiro was more like a kid than a kid. “Tickets to see Bi Rain.” Ariel said proudly. She knew that Rain was Jiro’s hero.
“No way! I thought it was sold out.” Jiro exclaimed.
“I have connections, baby.” Ariel laughed. Suddenly she caught sight of Joe talking to some people on the other side of the room.
“I’ll talk to you later J, make sure you leave me some cake!” With that, Ariel walked towards Joe.
“Joe!” She yelled to get his attention and Joe looked up, his face transforming into a big smile. Ariel walked to him and slipped her hand in his, giving him a semi-hug which Joe fondly returned.
