“He Jun Xiang, you are the world’s biggest idiot.” He muttered to himself.
He sipped his drink, asking the bartender for more when he ran out.
“Jun Xiang!” Rainie poked him.
“Ah, my favourite woman in the entire world.” Mike smiled.
“Liar. What are you doing here?” Rainie asked him, settling on the barstool beside Mike.
“Joe promised we could get roaring drunk.”
“Oh, why are you sitting here by yourself then?”
“Ethan went to dance with some chick, Joe’s talking to…her.” Mike gestured toward Ariel and Joe.
“Her? What, you’ve got amnesia now? You’ve forgotten her name?” Rainie said tersely.
“Whatever.” Mike said, turning his back at the party.
“Listen, Mike,” Rainie started. “You messed up last time, like, you really, really, REALLY messed up.”
“I know.”
“You do it again and I am going to kick your ass. You know that right?”
“You know Rains, you sound remarkably cold for a woman who is supposedly madly in love with me.” Mike said referring to the rumours that had sprang up crazily after they acted in two dramas together.
Rainie rolled her eyes. “You are too boring for me.”
“You wound me.” Mike replied.
“I’ll do a whole lot more if you hurt Ariel, Mike. I mean it.”
And picking up her purse, she left.
Mike sipped his third… or was it 6th drink absently. “It was funny,” he mused, “how everyone seemed to be warning him not to hurt Ariel. He wondered whether anyone had warned her not to hurt him.”

“Jiro’s friends really outdid themselves tonight, eh?” Ariel said to Joe.
The ballroom had been converted from a stylish monochrome space into a sparkling haven for a hedonist’s delight. There was a band setting up in the corner and there were rows and rows of buffet tables on one side of the room. Chairs and sofas to sit down and rest upon were located at the back of the room while the bar was doing a brisk business in the corner. Large doors opened up to the terrace with pathways to a beautifully maintained garden outside.
“I wonder where Rainie went,” Joe said.
“I’m here, your highness.” Rainie said appearing from behind them, holding two plates full of food. “Here Ariel, I got you a plate too.” And she handed Ariel a plate laden with food.
“Thanks Rains,” Ariel said gratefully, slapping Joe’s hands when he tried to sneak some food off. “Go get your own!”
Joe pouted and said to Rainie, “What? Am I not your friend too? Such discrimination!” And he sighed loudly.
“Drama queen.” Rainie said licking her fingers.
“Besides Mike said he’s waiting for you.” Rainie nodded at the bar.
“Oh right. I’ll go get him something to eat then since I’m such a good friend unlike SOME people here.” And Joe walked off.
“Mike’s here?” Ariel said, pretending to be nonchalant.
“Yep. At the bar, drinking himself into a stupor.”
Ariel, very carefully, turned her head to look at the bar.
“Where?” She asked when she couldn’t see him.
“Oh, Joe got to him. See?”
“Ah.”
“Rainie! You came!” A sweet, young voice said and Rainie looked up to see Arron. Arron was the fourth and youngest member of the band Fahrenheit that Wu Chun, Jiro and Calvin belonged to. Ariel watched curiously as a blush stained Rainie’s cheeks.
“Ariel, baby, dance with me!” Jiro grabbed her all of a sudden and then began a series of crazy dances. Ariel loved dancing. She danced merrily with Jiro, Arron, Ethan and Calvin. Suddenly the band started playing a slow song and Ariel found herself stuck between Jiro and Joe. Ariel rolled her eyes and swung off to dance the slow dance with Rainie, who stuck her tongue out at Jiro and Joe and said, “Whoopee, I got the girl!”
“I gotta go to the bathroom, Rains.” Ariel made her excuses after the dance. Rainie looked around and spotted Wu Chun standing in the corner with a plate of food.
“Ah ha!” She walked over to him.
“Hi!” She said.
“Hey. Enjoying the party?” Chun asked.
“Oh yes, it’s splendid. Oh before I forget, I got you something!” Rainie dug a jewel case out of her purse. “And I wrapped it prettily too.”
“It’s not my birthday.” Chun explained, grinning. Rainie looked at him blankly.
“I mean, you don’t have to give me a present. Its Jiro’s birthday-“
“Oh I know THAT. I already gave him his. This is yours.” And she smiled brightly at Chun and walked off. Chun stared after her, bemused.
