Chapter 2

The Thrill of Tuesday

That evening, Ariel reached home and had dinner with her mother, filled her in on her busy day, and then later kissed her goodnight.

She climbed into bed in her PJs and took the script out. She felt a quiver of excitement at the anticipation of meeting a new character. Ariel knew that as long as she felt this excitement, she would do a wonderful job and it was this inner anticipation that she carefully listened to and used so she’d choose the best roles. She opened up the script and started reading.

Blanche’s Tuesday was named after her mother’s favorite day of the week. She liked pineapple and she collected broken seashells because she fancied herself to be one. She carried on a passionate love affair with the ocean, often sitting and gazing at the waves at midnight. Tuesday’s mother was mentally imbalanced. And because of that, she was teased at school. Her dad had passed away when she was very young so it was only her older sister, her mother, grandmother and her in the family. Three generations of women. Tuesday shunned femininity publicly but in the privacy of her own mind, wished that she could just let down her guard and be a girl who did not have to be prickly like a porcupine, one who could dream about boys and lead a normal life, with normal parent, someone who did not have to be so strong and so defensive all the time. Tuesday had a dream. She wanted to dance. Professionally. She was willing to work for it but the school she wanted to get into was only for the elite. And the talented. Tuesday had talent but she didn’t have money. She got a scholarship because of the talent and gets into the school. There she meets the boy who whispers to stars and who dances to music only he can hear. He is the one who teaches Tuesday to be a girl, who lets her be one.”

Ariel stopped reading. She had fallen in love with Tuesday already but she was afraid and wary of the risk the drama would pose, the role was different, brilliant yes, but very different from the more recent ones she had portrayed. This character was a far cry from the adorable Xiang Qin. This character had more layers than an onion. And the last role she had done which was even a little bit similar to this one had been in L- Ariel cut herself off. She would NOT think about that.

But did she dare to bring Tuesday to life. Could she? Ariel was certain that the drama would be beautiful; there was such a rich tapestry of human emotion that embroidered the central love story. Ariel sighed.

It is very difficult to reconstruct a character, a 2-d character previously existing only verbally into a one that speaks, breathes and emotes in the real world.

But Tuesday excited Ariel in a way that none of her recent characters had. Tuesday posed a challenge and promised to stretch Ariel’s acting capabilities to their very limit.

The phone rang all of a sudden, its shrill sound interrupting Ariel’s intense thinking.
