There was a lag between filming as the crew rushed to prepare the next shot.
Ariel had been sitting up curled with a book of poetry; she had recently discovered a love for all things Spanish. Especially the literature. Spanish literature was so warm and full to bursting with the softer emotions, so even though her Spanish was basically nonexistent she would sound out the words, liking the feel of them on her tongue.
“Quítame el pan si quieres,
quítame el aire pero
no me quites tu risa”
“Pablo Neruda.” Mike said.
Ariel looked up, surprised. Mike continued.
“Take from me the bread if you wish, take from me the air… but do not take from me your laughter.”
“I didn’t know you read poetry.” Ariel said, a bit self-consciously.
“Why, you thought I was a dumb jock?” Mike taunted.
“Well, you’re hardly a jock.” Ariel smirked. Mike hmphed and crossed his arms.
“Joe and I often go to Bookaholics to read, y’noe.”
Ariel’s mouth dropped open.
“JOE reads poetry too?!”
“Close your mouth, Yi Chen. You look like a fish.” Mike grinned cheekily.
Ariel shut her mouth abruptly and then turned and glared at Mike.
“How come you guys never show this side of your personality to us?” Ariel demanded.
“It’s all about perception, Arie,” Mike said, his body unconsciously turning toward Ariel. “You girls are determined to see us as uncivilized louts who would rather play video games and burp the alphabet then go see plays and read, so you do. Just because we don’t go around wearing berets and quoting dead poets doesn’t mean we are uncultured.”
“That’s quite a speech, Jun Xiang.”
“You are miffed. You always call me Jun Xiang when you are miffed.” Mike laughed. “Don’t get me wrong, we love playing video games and burping the alphabet but we also realize that there is more to life than just that.”
“Hm. And I suppose you never stereotype us girls.”
“You and Rainie?” Mike asked. Ariel nodded.
“Well, of course we do. I mean, psht. We know you don’t bother your pretty little heads about politics and sciences and stuff. And that’s good too, no use thinking about things you don’t understand.”
Ariel gasped, outraged. She picked up her backpack and hurled it at Mike who ducked, laughing.
“I was kidding!” He held up his hands signaling peace.
“You’d better hope your little pink knickers you were kidding!” Ariel said standing with her hands on her hips. “I’ll have you know that that Rainie and I are avid readers, okay so maybe we read fashion magazines but that is not ALL we read.
“I know, I know! I was just teasing.” Mike said and then paused. “Pink knickers? They are red, thankyouverymuch!”
/End Flashback
Ariel smiled and made her way over to the bookstore. She loved bookstores. Ariel felt as though every book was bursting to speak, heavy with the desire to impart thoughts and tell stories and a bookstore with so many books was chaotic. But it was a good kind of chaos.
Ariel was browsing through the books when a familiar voice made her look up.
The book she was holding fell from her hands when she saw the person to whom the voice belonged.
“Kris…” Ariel whispered. She stared blindly as he reached out to someone in one of the rows.
“Come on, Patty! We’ll be late for the movie. I’ll buy you that book later, promise.”
Ariel got behind a stack of books as they passed her, hand in hand, laughing. At the door, they paused and the guy bent down and gave the girl a kiss which the girl fondly returned.
