Chapter 23

It Wasn't Quite Kris-mas

A half hour later she turned into the campus of National Chengchi University. The sprawling campus was deserted because it was summer and not many students were taking the summer semester and those who were, were unlikely to be out in the hot sun.

Ariel had spent a happy four years at this university. She parked the car and walked out not bothering with the hat or glasses.

She walked to the huge tree in the main courtyard, remembering her freshman year. When she had first seen him and fallen in love with him. Only she would have never told him. Her friends had introduced them and then despite her admonishments, had played matchmaker.

Ariel had been hesitant about the entire relationship. After her father had deserted the family when she was very young, her faith in men had been nonexistent and she did not want to emulate her mother and spend hidden moments crying for a man who did not value as she wanted to be valued.

But he… Kris had been dogged in his pursuit and Ariel had finally accepted his confession, shyly admitting that she liked him. At first it had been wonderful and Ariel had been ecstatically happy. But she had dreams and when she started getting offers for dramas; trouble had loomed in the horizon.

When she confronted him about it, he had denied that he was jealous of her rising fame. What he couldn’t stand though was that she would be kissing other men besides him. Ariel tried to rationalize with him that all she was doing was acting. But Kris couldn’t, wouldn’t accept that.

There had been fights ending in tears and screams. Ariel could have accepted that their relationship wouldn’t be able to work out had he been a man and told her so upfront.

But he thought of the cruelest way to let her find out.
He had sent her a text message to meet him in the courtyard after her class. Ariel thinking that he was finally over being mad had been giddy with delight. She had rushed out happily anticipating their reunion.

When she walked out into the sunshine, the sight before her eyes had stopped her dead in her tracks.

Kris was kissing a girl in front of the entire school.

Everyone had looked at Ariel, then at Kris; some had been on Ariel’s side and others who were jealous of her had said that she deserved it.

And to add insult to the injury, Kris, with his arm around the girl had said, “Just so you know, I don’t want to hear from you anymore.”

He had left and Ariel had been crushed. Not so much for the fact that she had been treated so badly but more for the fact that Kris had proved her distrust in men right. As a result, Ariel held “happily ever after” as a myth and a not very fulfilling one at that.

Ariel sat under a huge willow tree in the middle of the courtyard, leaning against its trunk and closed her eyes.

“Hey Sleeping Beauty.”

Author's Note: before you all make plans to lynch me or something equally (or more) painful, I don't mean to end in cliff hangers. It should be pretty obvious who this is.

Now to address some comments, most importantly the ones which ask me who Ariel is going to end up with. Truth be told, I don't know. I will find out just a few chapters before you, it all depends on how the story shapes and how the characters come to life. I know most if not all of you have preferences and I apologise in advance if I can't accomodate all of them. I might decide to bring in someone entirely new (=P). As for whether this is a Mike/Ariel fanfic or a Joe/Ariel fanfic or even a Mike/Joe fanfic, lol, it's a Mike/Joe/Ariel/Rainie fanfic. A story about friendship, love and pineapple. (Okay I made the pineapple up but it deserved a mention). Okay Kettle, I updated since you updated. And two chapters (okay one a quarter) so now you owe me at least three chapters. *cheese*
