“Hmm.”
“I have a surprise for you.” – Joe
Ariel texted him back.
“What is it?” – Ariel
“It’s a surprise.” – Joe
“Don’t be cruel, Joe.” – Ariel
“Cruel? Me? NEVER.” –Joe
“So what’s the surprise?” – Ariel
“Be ready in an hour and you will find out. Xoxo.” –Joe
Ariel stood outside her house waiting for Joe. She yawned, the same listless feeling she had felt at seeing Kris again gnawing at her.
“Damn Kris. Why did I have to see him today?” She muttered to herself.
“Talking to yourself again, Yi Chen?” Joe said appearing out of nowhere.
“Where did you come from?” Ariel whirled around in surprise.
“I’m God’s greatest gift to you and other women.” Joe said smiling sneakily.
“Don’t you wish!” Ariel smirked.
“Oh I do, how I do!” Joe said, dramatically clutching his chest.
“Where’s my surprise?” Ariel demanded.
“It couldn’t come to you so I have to take you to it.” Joe said enigmatically.
“What is it?”
“Patience, child.”
“JOE!”
“Patiiiieeeennnnceee.”
Ariel glared at him.
He smiled back brightly.
Ariel got into Joe’s car and he started driving.
Two minutes later.
“Are we there yet?” Ariel asked.
Joe grinned. “No.”
Three minutes later.
“How about now?”
Joe’s grin faded a bit. “No, we’ll be there soon though.”
“Oh okay.” Ariel squirmed around her seat, fiddled with her seat belt, and then started messing around with the radio knobs.
“Can’t you sit quietly?!” Joe said all smiles gone.
“NO!” Ariel replied huffing.
Ten minutes later.
“Okay, we are here.” Joe said turning into a driveway.
Ariel looked around cautiously, then realization dawned and she frowned. “YOUR HOUSE?” She exclaimed and then turned to Joe. “Zheng Yuan Cheng, exactly WHAT is your surprise?”
“My God, Yi Chen, I’m not that pervy!” He paused. “Okay… I am but not right now! Come on, both my parents are home so you don’t have to worry about me stealing your virtue.”
He stuck his tongue out her and hustled her out of the car and into the house.
“Ma, we are home!” Joe yelled as they entered the house.
Joe’s mom came out from the kitchen. She was a pretty, petite lady, with twinkling eyes and a perpetual smile shadowing her lips; it was clear to see where Joe got his sense of humor from. Not that Joe’s father, who was of average height, was any less jovial but Joe had definitely got his prankster side from Mr. Zheng. The height? No one was sure where Joe got his height from. No one in their family was above 6 feet. Except of course Joe.
“Hi Auntie.” Ariel smiled.
“Ariel, I haven’t seen you in the longest while. How have you been?” Ariel gave Mrs. Zheng a hug.
“This is favouritism!” Joe’s father said also coming out from the kitchen. “Where’s my hug?”
Ariel laughed and gave Mr. Zheng a hug as well. Not having a father of her own, Ariel had come to think of Mr. Zheng as a substitute father and he always acted like one too.
“You are looking much too thin, Ariel.” Mr. Zheng said.
“Well,” he turned to Joe, “if you hang around Joe, you probably will since he eats up everything there is and then asks for more.”
“Hey!” Joe said, huffing.
“Okay Ma, get to the movie room in 10 minutes, oh and did you make the snacks I asked for?” Joe said.
“Only cuz they are for Ariel.” Mrs. Zheng replied. “You don’t get any.”
“Ma!” Joe wailed.
“Unless of course she wants to share.” Mrs. Zheng said exchanging a smile with Ariel.
“Share? Of course I will share.” Ariel said and Joe looked happier. “With Uncle.” She added.
“HMPH!” Joe said. “Okay, let’s go to the movie room.”
“What are we watching?” Ariel asked.
“Fighting School Girl.” Joe said.
Ariel gasped. “No way! That movie has not even been released here!”
“I know this guy who knows another guy and well… let’s just say I know the right people who know the right people.” Joe said airily.
Ariel had wanted to see Fighting School Girl for ages. It was a Korean movie starring Shin Min Ah. It had been supposed to be released the last year but due to distribution problems it had kept getting delayed. And then only last month it had been released in Korea which would mean another two months before it got released in Taiwan.
“Ah Joe, I LOVE you!” She said happily, giving him a hug.
“Just love? How about I’ll be your slave forever and all that?” Joe teased.
“I don’t love you that much.” Ariel said poking out her tongue at him.
“I heard you were feeling a bit down so I thought I’d cheer you up with this movie.” Joe said.
“Who told you?” Ariel asked.
“Let me go get the snacks.” Joe said and escaped without answering the question.
