Chapter 27

Best Friends Are Forever, Just Like Pineapple

“Yi Chen, I’m coming over.” Rainie said on the phone.

Ariel yawned.

“It’s 1 in the morning, Rainers. Where are you?”

“Sitting in the car outside your house.” Rainie said.

“Stalker.” Ariel laughed. “Come up to the door, I’ll open it.”

Ariel opened the door and Rainie rushed in like a hurricane.

“Sorry for barging in so late, Arie.”

“It’s okay. Is everything okay with you?” Ariel asked a bit concerned.

“Oh. Yeah. Just that I hadn’t seen you for a while and I missed you and I just finished my recording half an hour ago so I decided to come see you.” Rainie said in one breath.

“Aw, you must be tired. Come; put your stuff in my room. We’ll have a proper sleepover.”

Rainie perked up and dragged her overnight bag into Ariel’s room.

She flopped on the bed and sighed loudly.

“Did you bring PJs or should I take out the pair you have here?” Ariel asked.

“Oh I brought my old ratty ones. I will seduce you in them.” And she fluttered her eyes at Ariel.

Ariel pouted. “Please, I’m not that easy. You’ll have to have silk on before I even look at you.”

They both burst into giggles.

“So how was the conference today? Was Belinda the Witch there?” Rainie asked later as they ate ice cream in front of the TV.

“Yeah, how could she not. But it wasn’t bad, not bad at all. Mike and I deflected most of her questions superbly.”
Rainie nodded and then snuck a look at Ariel out of the corner of her eye.

“How things going with Mike?” She finally asked.

“It’s a funny thing,” Ariel said. “It’s almost like we don’t have that three year gap where we weren’t talking. Crazy really, it’s not like I’m over the stuff he said but… I understand better now.”

“Hmm… I used to be so jealous of you.” Rainie confessed.

“Me? Why?” Ariel looked at Rainie in surprise.

“I used to have this humungous crush on Mike, did you know?”

“No!” Ariel exclaimed. “How come you never told me?”

“Cuz, well… cuz, it was so obvious that Mike was head over heels for you. Obvious to everyone that is, except you.” Rainie said.

“What?” Ariel said, blushing a bit. “Whatever, don’t say stuff like that.”

“Oh come on, Yi Chen, we are not sixteen any more and I am a pretty good judge of the feelings one person has for the other.” Rainie looked stern. “And be honest, you weren’t exactly averse to his advances either. You, whether you admitted to yourself or not, liked him too. Oh I know you always threw in the excuse of it being the character who was feeling that but I have seen you act in other dramas with other guys and it was never that intense, never that natural…”

And both girls sat silently, lost in their own thoughts.

“I don’t want to talk about this, Rains. If I think about this, I will end up doing something rash-“

“Yeah, cuz you are a chicken.” Rainie took a big spoonful of ice cream and put it in her mouth, sighing in delight as it melted on her tongue.

“It’s difficult being us, eh?” Ariel said softly.

“What do you mean?”

“People see us as these blessed, golden creatures, adored by millions, lauded by many and yet no one takes a look into what it really means to be us.” Ariel paused. “We may be adored by millions but we are answerable to millions as well. Our relationships are no longer our own and our private lives are hounded by those who would splash the least important details on tabloids making them daily fodder for gossip.”

Rainie nodded.

“It’s not like I’m not thankful for everything that fame has brought us, it’s just that sometimes it’s overwhelming.”

Ariel sighed and finished the last bit of her ice cream.

“Okay, Cheng Lin, it’s time for bed.”

And they turned off the lights and snuggled into bed.

Suddenly Ariel had a thought.

“Let’s have a strawberry party.”
“Strawberry party, Ariel?”
“Yeah, I love strawberries.”
“Let’s have a fruitcake party instead.”
“Strawberries!”
“Fruitcake!”
“NO!”
“Yes!”
“Okay let’s have a strawberry AND fruitcake party!”
“Aww Ariel, I LOVE you!”
“I love you too, Rainie!”
“Aww!!”
“I’m going to invite, hmm, who should we invite?”
“Joe. He’ll pout for ages and ages if we don’t.”
“Okay. Joe. And Wu Chun!”
“YES!”
“Okay maybe not.”
“Why not?!”
“Cuz remember Rainie, strawberries and fruitcake will be on the menu, not Wu Chun.”
“I’m sure he wouldn’t mind if I took a little bite.”
“Rainie!! You perv!”
“Hahahah!”
“How about Kingone?”
“Okay!”
“Oh and I’m inviting Ethan.”
“WHY?!”
“I like him.”
“*gasp* What do you mean LIKE?”
“You know, Like…”
“You mean like like?”
“Nooo. Not like like, just Like!”
“Are you sure?”
“Yes Rainie, I’m sure.”
“But why do you wanna invite HIM?”
“Cuz I just said, I like him!”
“Oh…”
“Why, you don’t like him?”
“Of COURSE I don’t! Hah! Like him?! As if! Never!!”
“You have a fever, don’t you? You sound delirious.”
“No I don’t.”
“You like Ethan?”
“Let’s talk about something else.”
“Bahaha, you like Ethan.”
“You are a skank.”
“You love me, Rains.”
“Total skank.”
“Rainie and Ethan. Sitting in a tree.”
“Queen Skank.”
“K I S S I N G!”
“Omg, how old are you?!”
“Hehehe!”
“Sigh.”
“Oh Rainie?”
“Yes Ariel?”
“Tell Joe to bring Mike along.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yeah, I don’t wanna leave him out like that.”
“Okay.”
“Oh and have you seen my ear plugs?”
“No, why?”
“Well, you snore so loudly that it’s the only way I can get some sleep when you sleep over.”
“Don’t hit me, don’t hit me!”

Ariel giggled as her comment led to a full fledged pillow fight.
