They had finally decided to have a bbq outside and since Ariel’s house had a large backyard, it was the obvious location for one. Of course there were strawberries and fruitcake for dessert.
“Rainie, where are the burger buns? Did you remember to get any?” Ariel called.
“Ariel, stop fussing. I got some this morning.” Rainie said as she passed Ariel, a tray of drinks in her hands.
Outside, the guys were setting up the grill, they had marinated the meat the night before and it was ready to be cooked.
Joe had a huge apron on, on which was written “Kiss the Cook.” Catching sight of Ariel, he puckered his lips, pointed to the apron then pointed to her. Ariel blew him a kiss and he caught it beaming.
“Hey what about us?” Ethan called out. He and Mike had already started barbequing, and looking at all her friends, Ariel felt a thrill of happiness sweep through her.
Rainie replied to Ethan by kissing Mike on the cheek.
“Is it my turn next?” Ethan asked hopefully.
“Dream on!” Rainie tossed her hair and walked off. Joe and Mike consoled him by offering him strawberries.
“Guys, Rainie and I are going to go change before anybody arrives. But if someone does, could you get the door please?”
“No problem.” Joe waved the girls inside.
“How about I give you a kiss?” Mike teased Ethan.
“Your lips aren’t like a girl’s!” Ethan pouted.
“But they are just as soft!” Mike puckered up.
Joe snapped a picture and said, “For blackmail purposes.”
And they started bickering good-naturedly.
Ariel closed the door smiling and went to find Rainie.
She found her in the bedroom, sitting at the vanity table doing her make up. Ariel stood by the door, struck once again by the delicate features and ethereal beauty that Rainie was composed of. She was dressed in a pretty summer dress, a shimmery yellow, like the sunshine. It was spaghetti strapped and had a flowy skirt.
“You are actually wearing a dress for a non-promotional event?” Ariel mused.
“I just felt like it.” Rainie said defensively.
“Uh huh. And it wouldn’t have anything to do with-“
“Don’t say it, don’t say it!” Rainie begged, closing her eyes and clasping her hands in front of her.
“Okay Cheng Lin, my butterfly. I won’t.”
“Hurry up and get showered.” Rainie urged.
