Chapter 30

Convoluted Plans and A Bit of Vinegar

Ariel ran to answer it and she found a very distraught Kingone on the doorstep.

“Hey, Kingone! I thought you weren’t coming. Come inside.”

Ariel invited him in and then turned to look at him. “What’s the matter? You look horrible!”

Kingone sighed miserably.

“Here, follow me.” And Ariel led him to the backyard.

“Kingone!” Mike hollered from where he was sitting with the boys.

“I’ll get you some food,” Ariel said and disappeared into the kitchen.

“What’s the matter, dude? You look like someone killed your kitty.” Mike said.

“I just got into the hugest fight with my girlfriend, man.” Kingone said sighing.

“Stupid girls.” Jiro muttered and Rainie kicked him while Yi Zheng glared at him.

“About what?” Wu Chun asked.

In the kitchen…

“Joe, since you are here, can you grab me a dish from the top shelf?” Ariel said as she busily prepared a plate of food for Kingone.

“Will I get that kiss you promised me?” Joe said, smiling playfully.

“When did I promise you a kiss?” Ariel asked confused.

“At 4:30pm, when I didn’t want to run down to the store to get the drinks, you said you’d give me a kiss if I did. I demand it now.” Joe pouted.

“Oh please. Okay here.” And she dipped a strawberry in cream and gave it to him.

“This is not a kiss.” Joe said accepting the strawberry anyway.

“Kisses, food, it’s all the same to you.” Ariel laughed.

With that, she picked up the platter of food and made left the kitchen, Joe following her.

“So your relationship is on the rocks because your girlfriend can’t handle the media?” Ethan asked Kingone.

“No, it’s not that she can’t handle it when they keep their distance, it’s just that right now, they are becoming really intrusive.” Kingone explained. “They are digging into her background, speaking to her relatives and it’s led her to question if this is all worth it.”

“Hmm, the media needs to concentrate on something else.” Mike said.

“Hey Jiro, where are Calvin and Arron?” Rainie asked.

“Hey stinky, don’t interrupt my flow of words!” Mike complained.

“Be quiet before I pound you into the ground with my heel.” Rainie threatened.

“Arron had an exam to prepare for and Calvin had something to do with his family.” Jiro explained.

“Hey Joe, do you think we should fan the media’s interest in us again?” Mike asked.

“What?” Joe asked joining the group.

“Here you go!” Ariel handed the plate of food to Kingone and settled beside Rainie who laid her head on Ariel’s shoulder.

“Thanks, Ariel.”

“What’s the matter?” Ariel asked looking at the sober faces of her friends. Rainie filled her in and Ariel looked lost in thought.

“Yeah, I don’t mind rehashing my lurrrve.” Joe said fluttering his lashes at Mike.

Ethan groaned. “You guys won’t GET ANY reaction soon.” He said.

“Yeah, he’s right.” Rainie added. “We need someone different, a new diversion.”

“How about me and Wu Chun?” Ariel said suddenly and everyone fell silent.

“What?!” Joe and Mike said at the same time.

“Well, what do you think Wu Chun?” Ariel asked.

“It’s not a bad idea. We have to discuss the fundraising for the UNICEF Hunger thing so we can do that AND divert the media’s interest from Kingone.”

Joe looked unhappy.

“Do you have a temperature?” Rainie demanded laying a hand on Ariel’s forehead.

Ariel laughed. “No I don’t! It’s not a big deal. Besides, if I appear with Wu Chun then there won’t be any big deal with me and Mike.” She looked mischievous.

Mike looked at Joe. Joe looked at Wu Chun. Ethan cleared his throat and started talking hurriedly. “But is that such a good idea, Ariel? I mean, you are so conservative, I’m surprised you would actually even consider doing it.”

“You don’t have to do it for me.” Kingone said. “I’m grateful but this might be a bit too much to ask.”

Ariel shrugged lightly. “We are friends and friends help each other out. Besides, I would hate it if you guys were to break up just cuz the media doesn’t realize the meaning of privacy.”

“Look, everyone else is dancing.” Rainie said jumping up. “Ethan, let’s dance.” And she dragged Ethan off.

“Besides, you guys can all pay me back by working at the fundraiser Wu Chun and I are planning for the UNICEF: Strike Against Hunger.” Ariel beamed.

“Oh yeah. We are planning a carwash.”

Jiro looked up interested. “Cool, I’ll come by and get my car washed.”

“Not quite, J.” Ariel said. “This time, we will be the ones doing the washing.”

“WHAT!!?” Everyone cried out at the same time.
