Joe and Mike looked at each other and then at Rainie and then Joe spoke.
“I felt like having fancy food.”
Rainie turned to Mike with her laser sharp eyes and Mike quickly hid his face behind the menu.
“You guys are up to something, aren’t you?” Rainie looked at both of them suspiciously. “I’ll figure it out sooner or later, boys. But Joe, you are paying.”
“What? Why me? Make Mike pay.”
“Mike wasn’t the one who made me change into this uncomfortable dress.”
Mike put down the menu and smirked at Joe. “That’s right, I wasn’t.”
Suddenly Rainie caught sight of someone three tables away.
“Hey, isn’t that Ariel?” She said.
“Ariel?” Mike said looking, pretending to be only faintly interested.
“Why, whatever would she be doing here?” Joe said, not even looking.
“Didn’t she say that she and Wu Chun were going to have dinner here before the play?” Rainie pressed on.
“Oh, that boy, yeah.” Mike said shrugging.
“Him. Right.” Joe fiddled with his fork.
“Hmm.” Rainie gave them a suspicious look. “I’m going to the washroom.” And she walked off.
Just as Rainie left, Mike turned his head swiftly towards Ariel and Wu Chun’s table.
“Damnit I can’t see!” Joe said craning his neck. “What’s happening?”
“She’s laughing!” Mike said furiously.
“What! He made her laugh?!” Joe almost yelled.
“*gasp* He touched her hand!!” Mike got up.
Joe dragged him down to his chair. “Sit down!”
Mike sat down crossing his arms and looking mutinous.
“I’m going to go say hi.” Joe stood up.
“NO! Let me do it. I’ll break a few of his fingers.” Mike smiled in anticipation.
“Neither of you are going anywhere.” Rainie said.
Joe and Mike both straightened immediately. They both, at the same instant, went back to perusing the menu.
“I don’t know what she’s talking about, do you Joe?”
“I have no idea. Maybe she just needs food.” Joe said.
“Get up,” Rainie said tapping her foot.
“Us?” Joe and Mike said together.
“You.” Rainie replied.
“Why?” Joe asked.
“We are going to find another fancy restaurant to dine in.” Rainie smiled sweetly.
“But I like this one. It’s really comf…” Mike trailed off as Rainie turned her glare full blast on him.
“Up!”
They got up.
“Move!”
“But…” Joe started.
“Now!”
They moved.
As they were leaving, Mike turned back one last time to see Ariel who had her head thrown back, laughing her crazy laugh. She looked so beautiful in that instant, bathed golden by the candle light, incandescent. For a bare second just before he left, his eyes met hers and she was still smiling, Mike pretended that it was him she was laughing for.
“Rainie, have you considered a career in the military?” Joe asked conversationally.
Mike turned back as Joe yowled with pain when Rainie stepped on his foot with her stiletto.
