Chapter 33

The Morning After

After Wu Chun dropped Ariel off at Rainie’s house as she had asked him to, Ariel and Rainie drove over to one of the more crowded boardwalks in the city and went strolling hand in hand, seemingly oblivious to the cameras clicking excitedly at their presence.

After ten minutes, Rainie turned to Ariel and grinned, “You think that’s enough?”

Ariel looked thoughtful, “It should be.”

They drove back and Rainie dropped Ariel at her house before continuing on to her place.

“Mike, wake up.” Joe poked Mike very early the next morning.

“MIKE!” Ethan yelled.

“Whatmmmmph?” Mike raised his head, looking blearily. “It’s still midnight. Let me sleep.”

“You were the one who asked us to come over for the basketball game!” Ethan grumbled.

“You should know better than to listen to me. I’m insane,” Mike said pulling his blankets over his head. “You shouldn’t listen to insane people.” He went back to sleep.

“Joe, get the water.” Ethan said.

Two hours later…

Ariel opened the door sleepily.

Joe barged inside shivering. He turned back to the doorstep and dragged Mike in. “Hurry up, it’s cold out there!”

Mike entered a bit reluctantly, nodding a bit self consciously at Ariel. Just then Mrs. Lin came to the foyer.

“Joe!” Mrs. Lin exclaimed smiling. Then she saw Mike and said, in a no less warm voice but with more uncertainty, “Mike.”

“Come in.”

“Hah, you should learn from your mother, Ariel.” Joe stuck his tongue out at Ariel and gave Mrs. Lin a hug. “I have to go to the bathroom!” And he ran off.

Mike reached into the bag he was holding and took out a bouquet of yellow flowers.

“Here you go, Mrs. Lin.” He said smiling shyly.

Mrs. Lin shot Ariel a look and took the flowers saying her thanks.

“My mom used to love yellow flowers,” Mike explained. “So every time I’d see her, I’d make sure to give her some. She used to say that yellow flowers were kissed by the sun, that’s why they, instead of blushing red, blush yellow.”

“Your mother must have been a wonderful lady.” Mrs. Lin said, touched by the emotions gathering in Mike’s eyes and sounding through his words.

“Yeah, she was.” Mike said.

“Okay! Mrs. Lin, I’m so hungry, could I possibly beg some food off you!” Joe asked familiarly.

Mrs. Lin laughed. “Of course, go into the living room and I’ll fix you boys something to eat.”

“Sweet. Let’s go, Mike.”

Joe dragged Mike off, who gave Ariel an unreadable look before leaving. Ariel had stood quietly the entire time watching the interaction between Mike and her mother. All of a sudden, she frowned. She wasn’t even allowed privacy inside her own home?

She stomped off to the living room.

“What are you doing here?” She asked Joe.

Joe was busily flipping through channels. Mike was hugging a cushion, his head flopped back on the sofa and his eyes closed.

“What are you guys doing here?” Ariel demanded again.

“Hah, the Pink Bunny PJ’s make an appearance!” Joe grinned and looked over at Ariel. Mike opened his eyes and turned to her.

Finding herself the center of attention, Ariel felt defensive and self conscious. She crossed her arms and walked over to the sofa, plopping down beside Mike. It was an unconscious gesture on her part but both Joe and Mike noticed.

“Well, are you going to answer me or should I start guessing?”

“Mike’s house was surrounded by fan girls.” Joe explained. “So we couldn’t go there.”

“What about your house?” Ariel asked.

“Well, my mom thinks that the tabloids are telling the truth and Mike and I are really having an affair.” Ariel’s eyebrows rose and she looked at Joe who smiled sweetly and then at Mike who hid in his face behind the cushion.

“So she’s trying to get both of us to go out with girls. I’m serious Arie, she’s adopted Mike as one of her sons and now she has her friends trying to find girls for both of us.” Joe shuddered.

“Yeah, Joe’s just miffed cuz Auntie said that she won’t feed him until he agreed to go out with, eh, what was her name?” Mike finally spoke.

“Anna.” Joe said grumpily. “I dunno why you sound so smug; she wants you to go out with that girl “Miyoul.”

Mike stopped smiling and groaned.

“Um, guys. I sympathise, I really, really do. But what are you doing at MY house?”

“Yi Chen! How can you be so cruel? We couldn’t wake Rainie up; she would have killed us and eaten us for breakfast!”

“What he means to say, Arie, is that he’s craving for Mrs. Lin’s cooking.” Mike said drolly.

“HAH!” Joe scowled at Mike. “Booger. You keep giving away my plans.”

Mike blew him a kiss. Ariel watched the exchange in amusement. “And you wonder why the media takes you two to be gay.”

Mike and Joe both turned to Ariel and asked at the same time, “Why?”

Ariel rolled her eyes. “I’m surrounded by dimwits.”

“Anyway, we want to know what you did with Wu Chun last night.” Joe said, giving Ariel a suspicious look.

“Do with him?” Ariel asked.

“Yes!” Mike said from her other side.

“What do you mean?” Ariel looked puzzled. “I had dinner with him and then we saw a play.”

“Did you hold hands with him?” Mike asked rapidly.

“Maybe.” Ariel said folding her arms.

“WHAT!?” Joe yelled.

“Yi Chen, help me set the table.” Mrs. Lin called interrupting the explosion that was coming.

Ariel poked Joe. “You go.”

“What? Auntie called you!” Joe said.

“I’ll go.” Mike got up and left.

“That stinker just made us look bad, Ariel.” Joe gave Ariel a considering look.

“I’ll tell Mom he collects stuffed animals and she’ll think he’s a perv.” Ariel said absently, flipping through the channel.

“Are you sure that’s all you did?” Joe asked.

Ariel didn’t pay any attention to him, her gaze caught by one of the cartoons.

“Eh Joe, have you seen this?” And she scooted nearer to Joe.

“Yeah, when I was 12. Gimme the remote, I want to watch a game.” Joe said trying to snatch the remote from Ariel.

“Guys, come and eat!” Mike hollered from the kitchen and Joe was gone in a flash.

“That boy,” Ariel thought shaking her head. Suddenly the doorbell rang and Ariel frowned. "My house is becoming a hotel." She thought to herself. She opened the door to a very irate Ethan.

“Joe’s here right? Zheng Yuan Cheng! Get out here right now!” Ethan yelled.
