Chapter 42

Pulses

Tuesday Scene Two:

Tuesday bunched her hands around her skirt and pulled it up, letting her ankles show. She slipped off her shoes and extended a toe into the fountain, shivering in delight at the coldness of the water.

Suddenly her attention was caught by a fish, darting golden in between the water lilies.

Tuesday was charmed by the flutter of its tail and laughed out loud. She was so immersed in watching the fish that she didn’t notice someone clicking away at her with a camera.

Daniel hid behind the wall feeling like a pervert. Why in the world was he hiding and taking pictures? He should tell this annoying girl about his intention to photograph her. She’d probably be so flattered that she’d fall in love with him. Daniel felt himself smile in anticipation of this.

“Oy!” He stepped out from behind the wall. Tuesday didn’t look up.

“I said oy!” He repeated, louder.

“I heard you the first time.” Tuesday said calmly, still not looking up.

“It’s impolite to not look at the person who’s talking to you.” Daniel growled.

“You are not talking TO me. You are talking AT me. There’s a difference.” Tuesday finally looked up but instead of looking at him, she focused on his throat.

Daniel was taken aback. This little slip of a girl who was playing with the fishes in the school fountain disarmed him so effortlessly. If his friends knew, he’d never live it down.

“Why are you looking at my throat?” He said walking nearer to her.

Tuesday pursed her lips in concentration and raised one cold wet finger to his warm throat, where his pulse ticked erratically.

Daniel stepped back as a flash of something totally unexpected electrified him.

“When I watch your pulse beat, it’s like watching you live.” Tuesday said smiling.

“You say the weirdest things.” Daniel replied to her.

“Did you want something from me?” Tuesday raised her eyes to his.

Daniel found his tongue glued to the roof of his mouth for a second.

“Yes.” He managed to get out.

Tuesday stared at him silently. He didn’t elaborate. Finally she asked him, “And what is it that you want?”

“I want you to let me take pictures of you.”

Tuesday’s eyes widened as she completely mistook the content of these ‘photographs.” Daniel read her mind easily and hastened to dispel her of her misunderstanding.

“Photography is my hobby. Not the kind you are thinking of, you sick little girl.”

“Tuesday.”

“No, it’s Friday today.”

“No, my name is Tuesday.”

“What?”

“My name. It’s Tuesday.”

“Are you sure?”

Tuesday gave him a look. Daniel grinned, embarrassed. “Well, I suppose you’d know what your name is, heh heh.”

“I don’t want to.”

“Don’t want to what?”

“Let you take pictures of me.”

“You intruded on my concert, didn’t you?”

Tuesday looked away. “So there you go, you owe me.”

She looked back at him. “Okay. But I have one condition too.”

“What is it?”

“Can I feel your pulse?”

“What?”

“Please?”

“Oh okay.” Strange, strange girl, Daniel thought and arched his neck.

“Wait.” Daniel said.

“What?”

“You aren’t a vampire or something like that, are you?” He asked Tuesday.

“I’m out in the sunshine, if I were a vampire I’d have melted in a pile of goo by now.” Tuesday replied.

“I dunno. You might be some sort of super vampire.”

“I’m not a vampire.”

“Are you sure?"

“Yes.”

“Okay then. Go ahead.” And he arched his neck again.

Tuesday put two fingers against the pulse beating, her cold fingers caressing his skin as they finally settled against his throat. Daniel took a deep breath.

“CUT!!”

At that, Ariel lowered her hand from Mike’s throat and started to get out of the fountain. As she lifted one foot to get out, she lost her balance and started to fall. She grabbed the nearest thing to her which at that time happened to be Mike. Mike’s arms instinctively went around her small frame and he held her for a single moment. Then recovering right away, he steadied her up and said, “Be careful.” He smiled carefully, politely and made his escape again, leaving Ariel to stare after him, confused.

Angela noticing the exchange between Ariel and Mike; shut her clipboard and narrowed her eyes in thought.
