Chapter 43

Was that a firecracker? No, that was Rainie.

That weekend…

“Sit. Eat.” Rainie bullied Mike.

She had dragged Mike out to Java claiming she was bored and everyone was ignoring her.

Mike ate his ice cream glumly.

Rainie put down her spoon and poked him. “What’s wrong with you?”

“I miss Joe.” Mike said sighing.

Rainie rolled her eyes and went back to eating ice cream. Just then Ariel arrived at Java. She walked over to their table.

Rainie smiled brightly at Ariel. “Hey hot stuff.”

Mike lifted his head in greeting then went back to his ice cream sadly.

“Why is he moping?” Ariel asked.

“He misses Joe.” Rainie said smirking.

Ariel laughed. “Cheer up, Mike. I’m sure Joe won’t replace you with any hot Greek Gods.”

Mike looked haughtily at Ariel. “Tease me. Go ahead. I’ve seen how you miss Rainie when she’s not around.”

“Aww! Of course she does! She’s my googly bunny!” Rainie exclaimed throwing her arms around Ariel.

Ariel laughed hugging Rainie back.

“The place is pretty deserted.” Ariel said gesturing to all the empty tables around them.

“Yeah, that’s because everyone else has a life unlike me who has nothing to do all day today.” Rainie said mournfully.

“Today is probably the only day you have nothing to do in an entire month, Rainie.”Ariel said dryly. “Oh by the way, Mike, I ran into Ethan in the parking lot. He said he wanted to talk to you about something so I invited him to have ice cream with us.”

“WHAT?!” Rainie shrieked.

“I invited Ethan-“

“I heard you but WHY?”

“Are we not talking to him?” Ariel asked looking confused.
“Oh my, look at the time, I’m late.” Rainie said gathering her stuff.

“You just said you had nothing to do the entire day.” Mike said.

“I lied!” Rainie snapped.

“Hey guys.” Ethan said approaching their table.

Rainie turned away from the table and sat facing the wall.
“Hey man, what’s up?” Mike got up and gave Ethan a half-hug. Ariel scooted over to Mike’s side and Ethan had no choice but to sit beside Rainie.

“Hey Rainie.” Ethan said.

“Ariel, can you tell him I don’t want to talk to him?” Rainie said not turning.

“Will you quit acting like an immature brat?” Ethan said to Rainie’s back.

Rainie gasped in outrage and turned to face Ethan.

“I dare you to say that again,” she said loudly, waving her spoon in his face.

“Immature, loud brat.” Ethan said slowly, enunciating each other carefully.

Rainie breathed deeply. Ariel was sure she could see smoke coming out from Rainie’s ears. She started to say something but Mike put a finger to his lips.

“You cockroach!” Rainie spat out.

“That’s the best you can do?” Ethan taunted.

“You vile, little, tutu-wearing egg-plant!” Rainie continued.

“You mosquito!”

“I’m not playing this game with you. No. I refuse to play games with STUPID boys who don’t know what they STUPIDLY want!”

“HAH! I don’t want to talk to annoying shrill... WEATHERNAMED PERSONS. You are not just Rainie, you are STORMY too. And… and Cloudy and MISERABLE. HAH!” And Ethan jumped off from the table and walked away.

Mike looked at Ariel. “I think I’d better go after him.” He said to her.

“I think you should too.” Ariel replied. So Mike left.
Ariel turned to Rainie.

“Um… Rains?”

“It’s rather hot today isn’t it? I think it’s hot. Well, very very hot.” Rainie said talking rapidly.

“Do you wanna talk about it?” Ariel asked.

“Talk about what? Why? Did something happen?” Rainie said, still speaking rapidly.

Ariel rolled her eyes. “Rainie…”

“I’m fine. Nothing’s the matter. See, I’m smiling. Waiter! Get me more ice cream!” Rainie yelled.
