There were clothes scattered everywhere, empty glasses on the table.
Ariel frowned. “That’s right; Auntie’s gone to China to visit some relatives. Rainie, you pig!” Ariel called out.
There was still no answer.
Ariel followed the music to Rainie’s room. The door was closed. Ariel knocked. There was no reply. Ariel went in anyway.
Rainie was dressed in her rattiest PJs, hair unkempt, lying with her head hanging down from the edge of the bed.
“Are you practicing to be a koala?” Ariel said, opening the windows.
“No. A sloth.” Rainie said without moving. She picked up a cracker from the side of her bed, perfectly positioned so it was within easy reach and popped it into her mouth, chewing carefully.
“Get up.” Ariel said.
“There is no point.” Rainie replied glumly.
“Why are you being so glum?” Ariel said, picking up the clothes from the floor.
“I’m practicing being the bride of Dracula.” Rainie replied.
“The bride of Dracula is better dressed.” Ariel smirked.
“Smirk away, you little smirker. You were out having fun at your camping trip-OMG!” Rainie suddenly jumped up. “Camping trip! How was the camping trip? What happened? Did you make out? No scratches? Are you still alive? OMG!”
“I’m not answering any of those questions.” Ariel scowled.
“It’s okay. I can probably tickle Mike into letting me know.” Rainie smiled like a cat.
“Rainie. I need to talk to you.”
“You are talking to me.”
“I mean about Ethan.”
“I don’t wanna talk about Ethan. It’s a boring topic.”
“Rainie.”
“Ariel.”
“Rainie, do you or don’t you like him? Just answer that question.”
Rainie got up and stuffed a lot of crackers in her mouth. She turned and faced Ariel with a triumphant expression on her face and gestured that she couldn’t speak with her mouth full.
Ariel nodded sneakily. “Fair enough. I guess you don’t like him. So…” She picked up a cracker and bit into it thoughtfully. “I guess you wouldn’t mind me going after him…cuz I realized that he really is very dashing and I think I might have a crush on him too.” And Ariel ducked her head as though blushing.
Rainie choked on her crackers, turning blue. Ariel walked over and gave her a hearty slap on the back.
Wheezing, Rainie managed, “Are you serious?”
“Uh huh.” Ariel, the epitome of seriousness, nodded solemnly.
Rainie’s mouth turned down and her eyes brightened with unshed tears at the thought of an approaching heartbreak.
Ariel felt her own lips tug up in response.
“But…” Rainie said in a small voice.
“Why? Have you decided you like him after all?” Ariel widened her eyes in a sad manner, disappointment flushing her cheeks.
“I…I…” Rainie made a face as though working very hard say something. Finally she burst out, “Yes!”
Ariel couldn’t hold in her laughter anymore. She started giggling and Rainie realizing that she had been had fell on Ariel, tickling her as revenge. This made Ariel laugh harder. After a few minutes, Ariel called a truce and they sat on the floor, breathing heavily and disheveled.
Rainie grinned at Ariel and then asked curiously, “So tell me what happened at camp.”
