Chapter 53

Kris-tal Clear

Ariel walked into Bookaholics half an hour early, knowing that Mike would be hungry and want to eat ten minutes after he arrived. She had run out of books to read and wanted to stock up on some good reading material. She walked into the fiction aisle, her gaze busily scanning the shelves and not noticing where she was walking. She bumped into someone then apologized absently, not bothering to look up.

“Ah ha!” She picked up the book Joe had recommended. “The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger.”

“Ariel.” Someone said and Ariel finally focused on the person standing beside her, sighing internally as she got ready to sign an autograph.

Her eyes widened as she saw who it was that was standing in front of her.

“Kris.” Ariel said, smiling politely. “What an unfortunate surprise.”

For some reason, Ariel mused to herself as she looked over him; he no longer had the same residual effect of love and hurt on her.

“What brings you here? I’m surprised you have time, Miss Super Star.” Kris drawled, in that manner he had of thinking that he was better than everyone else.

“Even super stars need to read, Kris.” And Ariel turned back to the bookshelves, dismissing him.

“Aw, are you still mad at me for the little trick I played on you?” Kris propped his hip against the shelf and settled as though for a long conversation.

Ariel nodded to herself. “I guess it’s time for the showdown,” she thought to herself.

“Trick? Mmm, if you mean that little incident where you cheated on me and then let me know in front of the entire school, then no, I’m not still lingering on it. I’ve come to accept that there is slime in this world and there is nothing I can do about it.” Ariel finished with a smile.

“Well, shouldn’t you be in the romance section then? Considering, you have such bad luck with your relationships?” He replied with a curl of his lips.

Just then the door to Bookaholics opened with a tinkle and Mike walked in, looking like that cherry on the sundae that is always welcome on a hot summer day.

“Yi Chen, where are you?!” Mike called out loudly, mindless of the awed whispers from the other patrons of the store.

Ariel looked over at Kris and raised one eyebrow. “You were saying?” She said in a dulcet tone.

Kris didn’t reply. He looked from Ariel to Mike, who was peering around searching for Ariel. His mouth drew in a straight line.

“Now if you’ll excuse me, I have better things to do than to regurgitate unpleasant memories. I’d tell you I wished you to have a nice life but I’d be lying and I don’t like saying things I don’t mean. Goodbye.” And Ariel walked away.

Mike found her just as she was coming out of the aisle and he looked curiously over at Kris who was still standing there, seemingly shell shocked.

“Who was that?” He asked curiously.

“That was no one.” Ariel said. “Let’s go.”

“Wait, I need to pick up a book.” Mike said. “Did you get yours?”

“Yeah, I picked some.” Ariel said gesturing to the stack in her hand. “Which one do you need?”

“Life of Pi by Yan Martel. I heard it was awesome.” Mike replied scanning the shelves.

“Oh I have a copy, I’ll lend you it.” Ariel said.

“Sweet. Let’s go check out and then find somewhere to eat, I’m hungry.” Mike said dragging Ariel to the cashier.

“Where do you want to eat?” Mike asked as they walked out of Bookaholics with their purchases.

“How about La Estrella? I had a pretty good dinner with Wu Chun there.” Ariel replied putting on her large dark glasses.

Mike shook his head in a quick negative as he put on a hat and pulled it low over his eyes. “I have some bad memories of that place.”

“What? I didn’t think you’d ever been there.” Ariel turned to look at him.

“Ah. Um. Yeah. Oh, I know, let’s go to this place that opened just a while ago. Remember that subway tunnel that was abandoned cuz they built a new line from somewhere else? Yeah, these people bought that tunnel, renovated it, built on to it and opened a restaurant there, aptly called ‘The Subway.’”

“That’s a brilliant concept!” Ariel exclaimed, intrigued.

“I know. It’s genius. I called ahead cuz the guy who owns it is a friend who used to go to school with Joe, Ethan and me.” Mike replied. Ethan, Joe and Mike had gone to a different university from Rainie and Ariel, splitting the group for the first time since kindergarten.

“Oh, did you bring your car?” Ariel asked wondering what to do about the extra car.

“Nah. I had Sandra drop me off cuz she came over with some stuff she wanted me to sign.” Mike replied.

“Okay, then I guess I drive.”
